Can PS5 go on its side? Many are eager to know whether you can use the PlayStation 5 horizontally, or if you have to play with the console stood up. When Sony unveiled the PS5 console, it did so by showing the machine stood up vertically. It looks great in this formation, but what if you want to lay your PS5 down on its side? As part of our PS5 guide, we going to reveal whether it's possible to use the console while it's lying down.
PS5 Vertical vs Horizontal: Can PlayStation 5 Go On Its Side?
Yes, you can lay the PS5 console on its side. Long answer: Sony may have led with the vertical arrangement for the PS5 reveal, but don't fret: you can place your PS5 horizontally, as with all previous PlayStation consoles. Sony has confirmed as much in a couple of images:
As you can see, the PS5 can indeed be put on its side with the use of a stand to accommodate its curved surface. The system comes with a base that allows you to configure it both vertically and horizontally, so you can display however you prefer.
Are you pleased to hear that PS5 can be placed on its side? Will you have your PS5 laying down or standing tall? Check out our PS5 guide, and let us know in the comments section below.

That's good as I don't really have space by my TV for a standing console. I wonder when we might get actual dimensions? Even a side by side with a PS4 would be handy for reference.
I was concerned about that as I need mine to be laid down so this is good to know
Nice. It was expected, but thanks for the confirmation. We just built a new TV unit. It would have been a serious frustration if the space I built for this was incompatible.
I do wonder what the size of the console is.
Good for confirmation sake. Although Sony have never included a stand before so I'm not holding my breath for one this time 😁
I’m not a massive fan of this console design. I preferred the dev kit one.
Hopefully it has a few USB ports on the back to??? I really hope so because I don't want to plug a ugly USB stick in the front of it(and I always back-up my game saves after playing a game so I really need one because I don't trust hard drives messing up after a while like my PS3 and PS4's have in the past) :-/ Anyway I will probably for the first time use it standing up because it looks AMAZING like that
@sanderev I get the impression that the console itself is pretty big. Possibly to house adequate cooling I guess?
Edit - just seem this 😱 https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2020/06/ps5_size_appears_to_be_huge_as_the_internet_estimates_dimensions
To be honest, when I first saw the design reveal I was discusted with it 😂 but it doesn't look too bad on its side, and as with the duelsense pad I'm getting used to it. I wonder if the curvy shell is to do with airflow for cooling purpose rather than just to look different?
Let me be the first to say.... It's an original design, but I think it's FUGLY!!! Maybe it will be less so in black. Same for the controller. Also pretty bummed out that there are no triggers/paddles on the back of the controller
will the ps5 support ultrawide 21:9?
Good. Can I have an all black one now please?
I don't care what way it goes as long as the fans are quiet on this console!
So if you lay it down Does that mean the discs need to go in upside down??
@jsw-8 Well this time they have to include at least one of them. If you can't place your PS5 horizontally OR vertically without buying a stand...that wouldn't be a very smart move.
Yes it can go on it side........ BUT i think it needs a special stand? (In Box OR add on purchase???)
@BNAG_Gamer well it needs a special stand to lay it down and a special stand to stand it up. The question is which one (if not both) will be stand-ard (pun intended)
Historically (PS2, PS3, PS4) could all turn vertically (and would often be advertised vertically) but the standard was horizontal/flat and requiring a stand for secure vertical placement. I would wager that this is the case with the PS5 as well, they just thought it was better looking vertical and so revealed it that way.
@thedevilsjester I hope you're right but Sony are usually stingy on random things like stands.
Although I could be wrong, but looking at it standing up, I think it's flat enough to stand on its own. Could be wrong though.☺️
I just found out how that white color is brilliant. If i put ps5 behind tv, that white will match with the wall and that ugly monstrosity almost disappear from my sight. 😁
I'm designing a new house around my upcoming PS5 purchase.
Looks like I will be removing the shelf the separates my PS4 Pro and Xbox One X and will have these consoles standing next to each other.
I know that both consoles support horizontal placement, but I feel like the cooling solution for both was built with vertical placement in mind and is therefore more efficient at this orientation.
Last thing I want to do is make the fans work harder than necessary.
Besides, removing the shelf should mean that there is plenty of extra headroom above the consoles for hot air to flow - thankfully my entertainment center also has an open back.
@MEGAMAN_D Why would you think that?
I wonder what side of the disc is up, because the shape of the drive, when the console is standing upright, suggests that the upper side of the disc points right while the bottom points left, but that would mean that the bottom side of the disc points up when the console is placed horizontally
Nice but..its bigger than PS4. And I am hoping for black and silver but it will be fine. Something is different and that's good, I guess.
Wonderful i love the Astrobot colours of the console very sci-fi.
As a console side layer i am very happy.
My son, an avid Doritos eater, is going to destroy those white controllers. YIKES!!!
I love the look of it standing up, but my home entertainment system means I will have to lay it down (unless I can persuade the missus to let me get a different one).
The design looks even better on its side. I always have my consoles on their side, so this is awesome!
I would have loved if the Playstation logo on the top could be turned, the same as the PS2 so you can orient it depening on how you have the console.
Good, now I don’t have to worry about my cats knocking it over haha.
@OmegaStriver
Because if you look at it standing up the disc slot is on the bottom right so I'm assuming you'd put the disc in with picture side of the disc facing outwards, do you know what I mean?
So when the console is laying down the disc slot is underneath
Wonder if it'll play ALL ps4 games?
@MEGAMAN_D The PS symbol was on the left side, indicating to me that it is the top of the system and a disc goes in with the label facing the top. I’d also seen at that time the proper way of it laying down.
I'd like it standing vertically, but unfirtunately I have no free space by the side of my 50' TV.
This news calmed me down, as now I understand I can place it underneath TV stand horizontally.
I'll leave mine standing, my mom will continuously ask me about my fancy router when she comes by.
All is well with the world now ! Next we need to know how many PS4 games will be BC at launch, and exactly which titles
Also what there game plan/road map is for adding more BC games in the future, as well as how developers can provide patches that transform the PS4 versions into upgraded PS5 copies.
Good to see it laid flat, Sony surely will include 1 stand to accommodate both orientations of this marvel of engineering beauty 👌 I really hope Sony have sorted out the jet engine cooling system my 4pro makes 🙏 I really struggle to see how ppl think the ps5 is ugly especially when compared to the microsoft black box urghhh
I always have my consoles standing , have them on a well vented shelf , laid flat cool down can play havoc with solder joints . Still have my launch ps4 playing games after 2 tear downs since i bought it still going strong.
@Boucho11 yours is the first comment that I've read so far saying that anywhere. of course I agree though. there were more insults to the dev kit than compliments for this thing. and it's white to boot. will buy it, but sheesh it's fugly... = )
@djlard and overheat... o.O
@uilliam13 It will overheat itself, no matter where it will be placed...
@uilliam13 I’m holding out for a black one. I’ve got all black furniture and a white console will stick out like a sore thumb. Seems strange that every console has been black yet this is white.
