How much storage space does PS5's SSD have? With all games requiring an install and many choosing to purchase software through the PlayStation Store, you may be wondering how much storage space there is on PS5, especially if you're planning to purchase the PS5 Digital Edition (See Also: PS5 Digital Edition vs PS5: What's the Difference?). As part of our PS5 guide, we're going to reveal how much storage space the PS5's SSD has. For more information, you can refer to the following guide: PS5 SSD: Why It's Better Than HDD. If you're running out of storage space, then check out this page: PS5 SSD: How to Install an Internal SSD and Expand Your Storage.
PS5 SSD: How Much Storage Space Does It Have?
PS5's SSD has an unorthodox 825GB of storage space. This is an unusual number, as the PS4 was primarily available in 500GB and 1TB configurations. However, we suspect it has a lot to do with the custom design of the console's storage solution. You can find out how it compares to both the Xbox Series X and PS4 Pro through the following links: PS5 vs Xbox Series X vs Xbox Series S: Full Tech Specs Comparison and PS5 vs PS4: Full Tech Specs Comparison.
It’s worth keeping in mind that while Sony is advertising 825GB of storage space, it won’t all be available out of the box. Because of the way storage space is calculated, you’ll get a maximum of 667GB when converted to account for the correct file format and any operating system features.
PS5 SSD: How Many Games Can You Store on It?
The exact number of games you'll be able to store on the PS5's SSD will depend on the size of the software you want to install. Some games require less than 1GB to install, while others can go up to 100GB. Realistically, if the average file size of your library is around 40GB, you should be able to comfortably store around 15 games, but your mileage will vary.
It's worth noting that the custom nature of PS5's SSD could reduce overall file sizes, as developers will no longer need to duplicate data in order to reduce read speed. However, next-gen games are likely to have higher-resolution assets, which could ultimately increase overall file sizes. We'll need to wait and see.
PS5 SSD: Can You Increase Storage Space?
You can increase the PS5's SSD storage space by purchasing a compatible NVMe SSD hard drive. Once available products have been announced you will be able to find a full list of all PS5 compatible SSD drives through the link: Best PS5 SSD: Compatible M.2 SSD Storage Expansion for PS5. You can also attach an external HDD for backwards compatible PS4 games (See Also: PS5 Backwards Compatibility: Can You Play PS4 Games on PlayStation 5?), although you won't be able to use this additional storage space for PS5 titles. You can find a list of the Best PS5 and PS4 External Hard Drives through the link.

'the average file size of your library is around 40GB'
How is that possible as most games range from 18-70GB. PSN titles maybe but if you have games like FIFA, Call of Duty (190GB+) Red Dead Redemption 2 (170GB+) 825GB is a joke, especially considering UHD texture and Video files are around 20GB alone.
What everyone seem to not get is the 825GB is useable space it's still a 1TB SSD just Sony desided to tell us just how much space we can use. When you get your Xbox series X you will see you can only use around 700 - 900GB of space the missing space is for the OS on the console, I have a 2TB drive in my PS4 but can only use 1.7TB
Mireya I would love to know where you are getting your info as I have not seen anything to suggest that 825GB is the usuable space on the drive. I do slightly agree that you will loose some space on the 1TB for the xbox but at the end of the day I'm betting you still get around 200GB of more space and that's going to make a huge difference in how many games you will be able to have installed.
yea i havent seen it posted where its 825 usable either. after OS, and the astro game im going to say little over 700 maybe?
@Mieya if you check the new teardown video for the ps5 you will see that there are 3 chips for the memory. Most probably 275gb each. If it had 1tb they would have said that is 1 tb but it's not.
EDIT: it's allready published that XSX will have around 802GB of usable storage available.
The PS5 has 667gb usable space.
Has nobody read this - https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2020/11/ps5_has_667gb_of_usable_storage_space_on_its_ssd
Sony had to keep costs down but not (at this moment in time) let players move PS5 games to external devices is really crap Sony.
Just goes to show why the UI was shown off late as Sony are still working on it's key features and will add them as firmware updates.
Microsoft wins on the UI at launch in my opinion and also with backwards compatibility. Sony has some catching up to do!
Ultimately, should I be looking to get the digital console or standard console then?
