Does PS5 have Smart Delivery for PS4 games? Microsoft has announced a scheme which allows you to upgrade software purchased for the Xbox One to Xbox Series X at no added charge. It’s effectively a form of cross-buy: purchase supported titles for one system, and you can play the next-gen version for free. Releases supported thus far include Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Cyberpunk 2077. As part of our PS5 guide, we're going to look at whether Sony has similar plans. For more information, refer to the following: PS5 Backwards Compatibility: Can You Play PS4 Games on PlayStation 5?
PS5 Smart Delivery: Does PlayStation 5 Have Smart Delivery for PS4 Games?
Officially, the PS5 does not have Smart Delivery, but that's because Microsoft is using the feature as a buzzword. However, virtually all of the third-party titles currently confirmed to support Smart Delivery, also include free PS4 to PS5 upgrades. You can find a full list through the following link: PS4 to PS5: All Games with Confirmed Free Upgrades.
As is the case with Xbox Series X, there are variations to how upgrades are being handled. EA Sports has announced an initiative that will allow Madden NFL 21 owners to upgrade their PS4 copy to a PS5 copy for free, but you'll need to initiate it before the release of next season's game. Other titles, like Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, offer free upgrades whenever you want to take advantage of them.
It's worth remembering that if you're planning to take advantage of any PS4 to PS5 upgrade, you'll need to purchase a digital copy if you're planning on getting the PS5 Digital Edition. This is because the PS5 Digital Edition doesn't have a disc drive to verify that you own a physical copy. You can find out more information through the following link: PS5 Digital Edition vs PS5: What's the Difference? For additional information, check out the following: Can PS5 Play Used and Pre-Owned Games?
Sony is leaving free PS4 to PS5 upgrades down to individual developers, and as such it doesn't have a mandated cross-save process. This means that titles like DIRT 5 will not allow you to convert your progress from PS4 to PS5, while others like FIFA 21 will transfer some data across but not all. For more information on save transfers, check out the following guide: PS4 to PS5: All Games with Confirmed Free Upgrades.
One thing Sony is yet to clarify is whether it'll be possible to upgrade first-party titles like The Last of Us: Part II and Ghost of Tsushima from PS4 to PS5. We'll update this article when we know more. For now, check out our list of All PS5 Announced Games and All PS5 First-Party Exclusives through the links.

There must be something very specific they wish to wait to reveal (or demonstrate) about this. I can't see why else they haven't clarified this already.
I’m not trying to be rude but this is a pointless article. Of course we don’t know if the PS5 will because hardly anything about the console has been released. This isn’t really newsworthy.
@Nerdfather1 😂 I thought I was on IGN when I read this article. It’s the usual place for click bait bollocks
@Boucho11 Same. Lol. PushSquare is better than that.
I don't expect there to be a smart delivery system on ps5 because I think Sony will go the opposite way and have Ps5 exclusives. Smart delivery is irrelevant to tlou2 and Got because there is no Ps5 version, they will run on Ps5 but that's just backwards compatibility. It's also irrelevant to third party studios because it's up to them, not Sony or Microsoft.
@phil_j that’s a lot of people’s fear, I think. Buy TLoU2 and GoT now, have them “simply run” on the PS5, then Sony turning around a year later and selling us a “Definitive PS5 Edition” with improved graphics and what not.
We really need to hear, by PS5 launch, if they will commit to giving us free upgrades for any first party game, at the very least.
Also, AC Valhalla and Cyberpunk both will launch before PS5, very likely. If we get them early, will we be able to just insert those disks on a PS5 and play the upgrades PS5 version? Or stuck running BC mode?
This is stuff we need to know and not just assume, especially given the competitor will indeed offer such upgrade paths.
@Tharsman They have already said backwards compatibility will feature boosted modes. Again this isn't what Microsoft have said. Because MS have committed to all first party titles being x box one and series x compatible, they need to do this. If for example HZD 2 is a launch title I can guarantee there won't be a Ps4 version, which is the opposite to what MS have said they will do. Hence why they need smart delivery. As I said, for 3rd party titles it's up to the publishers. CDPR have pretty much said it be the case for Cyberpunk. And I believe this did happen for some PS3/4 cross gen titles.
@phil_j that’s not something that is just up to the publisher, though, since the store and updated need to be able to download the right patch for the inserted disk, and that’s all on Sony store infrastructure side.
That aside: boost mode is nothing like smart delivery, all it can do is speed up load times and frame rate, never increase resolution or add features. Plus, getting a boost mode on TLoU now, still opens them the doors to sell a definitive edition later that actually add features. Need to know that won’t happen, and if it does, it will be free upgrade (at the very least for first party games.)
There are rumors of a PS5 version of Death Stranding. If I have to buy that again, I’ll be very annoyed.
I remember when I got my Ps4, I put my Ps3 version of Battlefield 4 in the Ps4 and it let me buy the upgraded Ps4 version for a small price? I had to use my Ps3 disc to authenticate the Ps4 version.
Would be cool IF Sony did something like that? Example, GTA V? Half price If you have the Ps4 disc in your Ps5 console?, (I wont be paying £64.99 for a game I have had on Ps3 & Ps4)
@phil_j exactly but PlayStation had so called smart delivery ( Cross buy) since ps3 era then Ps3/PSP, PS3/ps4/PsVita on certain titles so Microsoft just copying there own version obviously they offered something like it with quintum break with free pc version with xbox one
As we all seen smart delivery is a Microsoft made up name basically it’s upto the developers if they want to do that or not. 2K being one who isn’t doing it. Smart delivery is an xbox 1st party thing! EA are upgrading both next gen consoles if you can call the series X a next gen... Microsoft are trying to make their consoles like PC in which case people who want to play xbox games just buy a decent pc... I like what Sony are doing it’s been the way of consoles since they started exclusives to that system.. PS4 is backwards compatible so I don’t need anything else... I’m guessing the last of us 2 will receive an upgrade for the ps5. I hope people stop throwing around the words smart delivery
@phil_j I disagree with smart delivery. Now, before you think I’m just another Sony fanboy (fangirl in this case) I’ll inform you that I’ve pretty much owned every console there is, and currently own a PS4 Pro, One X, Switch, and Stadia. I really don’t limit myself to one console because that just doesn’t allow me to experience everything I can no matter what it’s on. I think that being so hardcore that you become blind to facts makes it really hard to see the truth behind things like Smart Delivery. (Edit: I’m not claiming any of you are hardcore or blind, just FYI) In this case, here is what I came to realize about the Xbox Smart Delivery. The fact that all of their new titles will work on both the One X and Series X, makes it really hard for me to even justify buying a Series X at launch. Microsoft isn’t really giving me an enticing reason to upgrade right away. I’m just not sure that the first year or two of new games for either PS5 or Xbox Series X are going to push the limits right off the bat. Just like with last generation, it took a few years for developers to really get a taste for the true capability of the One and PS4. Looking back on launch titles for those, and then comparing them to titles right now — there are significant differences in quality. It’s because they learn as they go. So, maybe it makes sense to buy a Series X in a few years, especially when 8K becomes affordable — but right now? I can’t justify it. PS5 on the other hand has specific games made just for that and I don’t want to miss out on those so immediately it created a need for me to buy it at launch. I think Microsoft needs to step up here. They haven’t shown any gameplay demoed on the actual hardware yet. They’ve shown CGI that was studio-rendered, and they’ve shown some game footage that was actually just demoed in-engine on a high-powered PC. I need to see more, they just aren’t really crossing the bar (and it’s not a very high bar for me) to make me need a Series X NOW. Anyway, that’s my two cents.
@redphyre well, the next game for Xbox you are going to buy, will you buy the Xbox One version or the Xbox Series version? Both version is playable at either generation!
If you buy the Xbox Series version you have done exactly what MS wants, they don't need to sell hardware to make money.
@lostfields it’s not really a great business model to be honest.
Microsoft seems to be all about the customer expirence at the moment while Sony think their top dog and don't have to try any more. Big mistake Sony!
I remember the days where Sony kept poking fun at Microsoft for example the game swap method
