PS5 and 4K UHD Blu-rays: Can PlayStation 5 Play Them?

The news I am waiting for is whether or not the UHD Bluray player will support Dolby Vision in movies, and will it auto-detect?(something Sony UHD Bluray players do not do).

Of course I'll watch UHD movies. There is Predator trilogy waiting on my shelf for a few years, because - ohhh PS4 Pro cannot play UHD...

Already got The Matrix trilogy 4K UHD. Just got to wait until the PS5 release to watch it.

@joehod I'm also waiting to hear about UHD Dolby Atmos support. It's disappointing that games won't support Atmos as Sony are trying to push their own niche 3D sound format, hopefully they'll licence Atmos for movies otherwise it will be another benefit that the new xbox will have over the PS5 as it supports Atmos for both movies and games and will work with all the Atmos enabled sound systems.

@Nkuk I am sure that the UHD player will support Atmos for movies. It would be insane if it didn’t.

I doubt the PS5 will support Dolby Atmos.

I was wondering the same thing...although I think I'm going to upgrade to 4K next gen and move my 3D TV to the other room, along with my Pro.

Finally catching up to the other guys. Better late than never I guess.

I'm using Xbox series X as my Blu-ray player, and have a separate dedicated Blu-ray player for Dolby vision for just this issue. I run a HT set up so I would like to consolidate to one media player.

Day one patch update or something as well as Dolby Atmos would get me to pull trigger.

Too many unanswered questions. No point in speculating until Mark Cerny gives his next deep dive into the hardware. My TV supports ATMOS, don't think my older Denon Amp will. Then the PS5 might need attached directly to TV if I can't pass through 120Hz. Then will the TV pass the audio back via eARC (works ok with Netflix). Might get a few of my favourite movies on 4K UHD 😎

@Sidhartha if Microsoft could just have the games like Sony does they'd be absolutely killing it. Everything about their initiatives is better and more consumer focused while their hardware and software implementation is miles ahead in the ways that ACTUALLY matter to end users (like being able to use your stuff with industry standards).

Hopefully they're game output takes a better road this gen because from a platform perspective I'm all in on what they are doing but without the games I'll still be buying a ps5 over an Xbox.

At the end of the day that's what really matters most.

@Crowley22g too be clear if you're receiver is that old it most likely doesn't support eARC and would only have access to regular ARC (locked to pcm 2.0 or bit stream standard Def dolby digital / dts)

(hint: I'm already dealing with this stuff with my hdmi 2.1 LG OLED and my 2080ti pc)

A new receiver is likely to still be in the cards for both of us but I would still recommend going with a direct connection to your TV from your 120hz stuff as it will keep input lag and processing to a minimum and ensure all your TV's functions are properly leveraged. Then you can still connect less frame rate focused stuff through the receiver and use that connection between the two of them to do all the audio (via ACTUAL eARC on the new receiver) and delivering you full pcm 7.1 or dolby trueHD / atmos /dts-x from all devices connect to either the TV or the receiver.

@4KKO with Sony ignoring all the money people have invested in something like atmos home theaters for sound (to save a few bucks on licensing) I highly doubt they'll be pony-ing up for the same "extras" on their blu-ray software.

We will have to see but I don't expect it at the beginning but an uodate later on down the road after people have road them long and hard for cheapening out compared to what Microsoft offers (as in full dolby atmos support for games and movies)

The Z9F soundbar I have only has two HDMI input which means if I buy a PS5 I can replace my 4k bluray player + PS4 pro setup with a single PS5, and use the other input port for something like an Apple TV or other OTT box

Yes i will be playing blu rays.and dvds on my ps5 and i would not have any game console without disc drive.i prefer physical copys of games .and when they no longer have disc drives is when i no longer buy one .

@Cybrshrk The amp is a Denon AVR-X2300W I bought in 2017. May look at an upgrade next year. TV should be ok for PS5 it's an LG E9 65 OLED. The picture like you said will need a direct connection to take advantage of HDMI 2.1 (13ms input lag). The picture quality from TLoU2 was outstanding 😎
