What are all VRR optimised games for PS5? Variable Refresh Rate is a feature for PlayStation 5 that works in tandem with compatible televisions to smooth out performance hiccups that can occur in games. You'll be able to apply this technology to all of your games by enabling a toggle in your system's settings. However, many games have been further updated to take full advantage of the feature. On this page, as part of our PS5 guide, we've listed all VRR optimised games for PS5.
If you're in need of a new television to take advantage of VRR, then we have a few recommendations in our Best 4K TVs for PS5 in 2022 guide. Do keep in mind that you will need to use the HDMI 2.1 cable included with your console in order to take advantage of VRR. For more information on the improvements HDMI 2.1 can offer, have a browse of All PS5 Games Running at 120fps.
All VRR Optimised Games for PS5
VRR will work with all games on PS5 if you enable the Apply to Unsupported Games toggle in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. However, select games have been specifically optimised for the feature. In the case of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, for example, the game will always target a higher dynamic resolution threshold when VRR is enabled, regardless of the graphics setting, allowing the technology to clean-up any subsequent framerate hitches incurred. Implementation will, of course, vary on a game-by-game basis.
Below is a list of all VRR optimised games for PS5:
- Astro's Playroom PS5
- Back 4 Blood PS5
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War PS5
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 PS5
- Call of Duty: Vanguard PS5
- Deathloop PS5
- Destiny 2 PS5
- Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition PS5
- DIRT 5 PS5
- Ghostwire: Tokyo PS5
- Godfall PS5
- Hogwarts Legacy PS5
- Horizon Forbidden West PS5
- Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores PS5
- Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered PS5
- Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales PS5
- Overwatch 2 PS5
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart PS5
- Resident Evil 4 PS5
- Resident Evil Village PS5
- The Last of Us: Part I PS5

Unfortunately I've just completed Tiny Tina Wonderlands and sold it but would of loved to test it out to see the difference.
Looks like il have to re install either destiny 2 or dirt 5 to test instead
@UltimateOtaku91
Unless you noticed frame stuttering or screen tearing you wouldn’t see any difference. It’s not like VRR improves performance or anything.
@thefourfoldroot can't say I've seen any screen tearing in any of the games I've played, on ps5 atleast
@UltimateOtaku91
No, me neither.
That ASM1 suit truly is one of the best!
@thefourfoldroot Mostly correct. But in the games they are specifically patching there is a chance they will increase graphical settings for VRR. If the game held a stable 60 before they should be able to squeeze some extra graphical settings and let it dip below 60fps without any noticeable drop of fluidity. Whether they actually do this is another story.
EDIT: Plus as the article says DRS can be adjusted to be a bit less aggressive and give a sharper picture.
@UltimateOtaku91 Me neither. Though a few people have pointed at Ubi games especially Far Cry 6 and AC: Valhalla as likely culprits. I think DF mentioned it in their review, though I might have got that wrong, don't hold me to it.
@themightyant
True, there is a chance patches will be released that effectively allow for unstable frame rates because it’s not as noticeable with VRR activated. I hope not though. Just because it can’t be seen as easily doesn’t mean it can’t be felt.
DMCV was pretty choppy. Definitely going to give it another try with VRR.
COD Vanguard and Cold War are sometimes really juddering for me and some friends. Hopefully this will fix it all
Deathloop should be added to the list too
@BoldAndBrash A man of culture I see.
@thefourfoldroot Brilliant comment as I think people are expecting a massive difference to these games.
I have to say Astrobot is one of the finest games I’ve ever played. Fun and a love letter to Sony and video games.
@thefourfoldroot because on Sony games, they have v-sync enabled. So you don’t see tears. But only stuttering.
@UltimateOtaku91 I tried Tina on Xbox with vrr. Tina is a big mess. It’s not really optimized for vrr that well.
@themightyant
Yes far cry 6 screen tears so will be interesting to run it once the VRR is enabled on the PS5 console.
It should get rid of the screen tearing for sure.
I will test that game for sure.
@Luigia
True, but I have a soft spot for the little guy anyway as Rescue Mission is one of my favourite games of all time.
RE village already received an update today.
Check Deathloop twitter
VRR is now available on the PS5. 👍
My test result so far:
DIRT 5 - 120Hz no VRR
Astro's Playroom - 60HZ no VRR
...and good night
[edit] At least my TV is not detecting VRR coming from PS5 (Samsung QE65QN91AATXXH HDMI4 2.1 + Audioquest HDMI Carbon 48)
@Oz_Momotaro
This is interesting. Thank you Oz.
However, I have flicked "Apply To Unsupported Games" switch on.
@UltimateOtaku91 if you’re installing dirt- bring a lawyer and set aside around an hour to get through the Eula. It’s absurd and they want information on your motility and count before they let you play.
I tried cyberpunk yesterday and there is a noticeable difference with VRR..it almost eliminated all frame drops except the half second studder when the game saves.
@zebric21 I don’t know what I’m seeing. Forget where to check in Cyberpunk could swear Elden Ring is smoother unsupported but then only when above 48hz right ..probably helping to a degree had no idea VRR was even on my PS5 saw no update had to do a couple of things on my LG too restart to even make Instant Game Response / AMD freesync enableabable. Mash the green button 7 times; see if it’s in effect Fixed now says VRR and the hz is fluctuating away so got it.
There’s a good breakdown here. Shows Low Framerate Compensation not in effect on tested games, someone else says Elden Ring blurry below the 48hz. Maybe unsupported should go unchecked

I would but my PHILLIPS 4k tv doesn't support VRR 🤣
True to form, Sony has royally fudged up the introduction of VRR. Lots of TV owners are being informed via their PS5 dashboard their respective TVs are only capable of VRR up to 60Hz, which isn't true.
To contradict itself, on the same dashboard menu via the PS5, it confirms the TVs are capable of up to 120Hz in SDR and HDR.
@dillanarmanii Clearly not played Far Cry 6 of a Plague Tale
@Ashcrapper I played them on Xbox. No tears> What do you mean by that?
No problems getting this enabled here.
Nice to see Spider-Man get the 40FPS@120Hz treatment. More games need to use this option if they can. It's a shame Ghost of Tsushima has apparently had it's last update for PS5.
The FPS boosts are nice on the performance modes.
https://www.techradar.com/opinion/i-tested-vrr-on-ps5-and-its-great-but-xbox-series-x-does-it-better
Why PlayStation continues to not enhance things that make it possible for the most people to reap the benefits (FreeSync VRR vs HDMI 2.1 VRR) is beyond me. It 'has' to be to sell more TVs.
@dillanarmanii that both games suffer from screen tearing on PS5
Horizon Forbidden West PS5 VRR support, June '22?
TiVO-like interactive tapedeck that accidentally constricts a length of imaginary VHS-like minifilm VS f/s rate dropping pc-cd display output. That is all there is to it.
Horizon is not yet optimised
Still bummed that Spider-Man Remastered has a bug that doesn't let me air yank enemies with VRR + Performance (regular or RT) Mode enabled
@thefourfoldroot
well that depends on what you mean by "improve performance".
VRR does not limit the fps like it does otherwise.
So it actually can improve performance if the game is allowing unlocked fps.
Normally the games would apply something like V-Sync to limit the fps to something like 30 or 60 fps.
but with VRR the the game can run at 58fps without the game pushed all the way back to 30fps by v-sync.
And that jump between 60fps and 30fps will be way more noticeable than the change from 60fps to 58fps.
So is you ask me then VRR certainly improves the performance.
i'd have to argue only the spiderman games, ratchet and clank and horizon forbidden west are VRR 'optimised'
godfall for example has vrr enabled but it is totally useless. in performance mode it is locked 60 so vrr is irrelevent
and in quality mode the fram rate is near constant below the vrr threshold of 48 fps.
HFW VRR optimised runs to perfection on my 65” tv.
Ghost of T next please.
@get2sammyb Would love to see one of these lists for 40fps modes.
It's far closer to 60fps in terms of smoothness than it sounds (actually half way between 30 and 60 in terms of frame time) and allows better graphical settings than 60fps.
It has fast become my sweetspot for gaming. God of War Ragnarok, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Horizon: FW all look both spectacular and smooth.
missing God of War Ragnarok for their unlocked performance mode
@thefourfoldroot actually it often does. Some games like Miles Morales, God of War Ragnarok, and others offer unlocked framerates. Without VRR the performance mode is usually locked at 60 FPS. With VRR performance mode instead runs about 70-90 FPS.
Thanks for sharing the very handy list!
@thefourfoldroot VRR does improve performance when it enables unlocked framerates. Some games that support this are Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves, God of War Ragnarok, and Spider-Man Miles Morales. You're right in thinking that VRR doesn't make a huge difference when framerate isn't unlocked, but unlocking framerate (usually going from 60 FPS to something like 70-90 FPS) is a big deal. Hopefully more and more games will be utilizing unlocked framerates in the future. If the trend of the recent past continues, it will probably be the new standard for major AAA games.
