In case you'd forgotten, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 — the movie, not the game — is due to release this year. Picking up the story after the second film, which brought Knuckles to the party, the third entry has teased the introduction of Shadow the Hedgehog. However, he won't be the only antagonist for Sonic and pals to deal with, as Dr. Robotnik will also be back.
As reported by Variety, Jim Carrey is now confirmed to be returning to the role of Robotnik. The news comes alongside a short teaser for the film, featuring a familiar-looking logo and a sinister chuckle from Eggman:
In 2022, Carrey announced he was considering retirement from acting, but it seems Paramount has won him back for one more jaunt as the evil genius. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is hitting theatres on 20th December, 2024, so there's still a while before we see him back on the big screen, but he'll no doubt be just as entertainingly silly.

Not surprising. It gave his career a resurgence. Not that he is a hot commodity anymore, but it keeps him going.
He did a good job though and makes the movies more enjoyable. I could think of worse ways to twilight the career.
Worst part of both movies. He's not playing Eggman, he's just doing his same tired shtick for thirty years ago.
Yikes, I didn't even know there was a second.
There is only one Sonic-related thing fitting enough to celebrate Carrey's return.

Fun fact, today is also the 30th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (the game) AND its also "Hedgehog Day".
This is great news, he's a very big part of why these films are good, especially the second one. I'm looking forward to Sonic 3
So excited for this film and over the moon to see Carrey back in the role
This really makes me happy. He made the first two movies.
I liked the 1st, but haven't seen the 2nd yet. Carrey can make me laugh as hard anyone so I'll definitely see the 3rd at some point.
Hope it's not his last, but he's one of the most successful comedic actors of all time and in his 60's. Should absolutely retire if he doesn't enjoy it anymore.
This is probably his last film and he will want to end on a high note
@Enuo Hasn't Johnny Depp basically played the same character for like 35 years now? Is just something that a few actors are able to pull off, is shouldn't be a negative that they have their own trademark acting style.
@Enuo "same tired schtick for thirty years ago"? That's like moaning because Jackie Chan only does Kung Fu movies. Most actors play the "same" role in their movies, it's why they're hired to do the movie.
@Enuo
He's brilliant in both films so i'm thrilled he's back.
Glad he’s sticking around for the trilogy, he was wonderful as Dr. Robotnik in previous instalments. Sonic wouldn’t be the same if he wasn’t around.
@Enuo Agreed, even if we do seem to be in the minority. Carrey was painfully unfunny in the first film.
He also seemed to be peddling some sort of "scientists are narrow-minded and refuse to listen to anyone else" act, which felt depressingly out of place in a kids film and contained echoes of some of his ill-informed views on certain matters.
Kino is back on the menu guys!!
@Juanalf Isnt a Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Vin Diesel, Jason Statham even worse in that way.
Gremio108 : "He also seemed to be peddling some sort of "scientists are narrow-minded and refuse to listen to anyone else" act, which felt depressingly out of place in a kids film and contained echoes of some of his ill-informed views on certain matters."
Out of place? These kind of scientists, among other types, have been commonplace in 'children/family-friendly' fiction works for decades. Not sure why you think Carrey's portrayal of Eggman is any different.
