By the way, it was only recently that I realised what your avatar was, even though I put way too much time into The Witness! I guess I don't pay enough attention to stuff like that lol.
@Octane That's funny The puzzles are ingrained in my consciousness! Thinking of changing my avatar in the new year but not sure what it'll be yet. Kermit may even come back, who knows
I used to visit IGN’s site regularly, but since becoming a “Square” here, I almost never go there anymore, but came across their GOTY choices by accident while surfing a little today. I found it just interesting to compare and contrast our forum choices, the GAme Award choices, and IGN’s choices. It will be interesting to see how other sites also compare.
Obviously our forum and PSquare’s emphasis is solely on PlayStation, but there is a lot of commonality between lists. IGN has - Zelda, Mario, Cuphead, PUBG, Divinity Original Sin 2, Destiny 2, HZD, NieR, Persona5, and Wolfenstein 2.
Of course the first 5 were not included as potential candidates on our forum vote since they do not appear on Sony’s console, but the interesting thing I found was the inclusion of DOS2, a game that I heard very little about, compared to the other PC exclusive game PUBG. Maybe because there is not a PS4 port forthcoming.
As far as the others, in our vote Destiny2 and Wolfenstein 2 didn’t even crack the top 10, so it’s interesting that they were included.
As far as their “top PS4 game” they fell more or less in line with our choices with the inclusion of Nioh, Gravity Rush 2, Hellblade, UC LL, and RE7 in addition to the others from the overal GOTY category, with the only strange nominee being Undertale — a game that finished pretty low on our list. Notable exclusions would be Yakuza 0, GT sport, and AC Origins, all of which we had significantly ahead of D2, Wolf2, and UT.
Anyway, just random rambling thoughts of mine. I don’t propose that IGN is wrong, but I’ll just say, I appreciate our forum polls and this site a lot more because of the large amount of player feedback on here that helps paint a more complete picture.
@KratosMD Yeah, I listened to Beyond for a long time and had IGN as my go-to site until first Ryan Clements left, and then later Greg and Colin. Clements would have certainly been more prone to include the Japanese titles in the discussion like Yakuza and Danganronpa. I recall him being a big fan of the Japanese niche games. In fact, IGN in general was very PlayStation-centric while they were there, and it seems a much more multi-platform emphasis now. Also it has become very dense and busy with all kinds of pop-culture stuff that just overloads me so I just avoid the site all-together. I do occasionally read their reviews, which are usually pretty good though. Usually they’re a little light on criticism, so you have to take them with a grain of salt, but well written nonetheless.
On the GOTY subject, I hadn’t watched the video until just now, I had read the article. Haha, and you’re right, Undertale gets like 2 seconds and 2 screens worth of coverage in the montage. Lol. The game doesn’t fit with the epic background music that’s playing and all the other games showing massive AAA battles, jumps, enemies, and explosions.
And like you, I wouldn’t necessarily oppose Undertale’s inclusion in the list, I certiainly appreciate indie and small developers getting props, it’s just the game hasn’t resonated with me. Like in my GOTY voting, I included The Nonary Games, mainly because of the simple but fascinating game 999 that I personally enjoyed much more than Undertale.
It’s fun to think and discuss about though! What is it they say about opinions?... they’re like armpits — we all have them, and they all stink.
I made an amazing discovery tonight: archived content from my first ever video games website. I had just turned 13 when I made this — it's amazing to think I was passionate about doing this even as a child.
If anyone's interested, I took some screengrabs here:
Probably doesn't mean much to anyone else, but seeing this stuff again is crazy for me.
@get2sammyb That's pretty cool boss. I imagine 13 year old me was 'letting it rip' with Beyblade's and battling kids by the sidewalk in Yu-Gi-Oh.
Also I really like Gin & Tonic . Great song.

Wow, Sony didn’t get much love in the Game Awards last night. Horizon Zero Dawn was shut out! I can’t say I’m not surprised that Zelda cleaned up most of their awards. Haven’t played it but all the buzz seemed to point that it is a transcendent game. I was surprised Cuphead mopped up so many awards. The only strong showing for Sony was Hellblade getting a couple awards and the one for Persona and NieR each ... well, that and the strong showing of trailers for Sony.
@Th3solution When people like Matt Cassamasina, Mark Bozon and Craig Harris were still at IGN their Nintendo department was really great. Man, that's so long ago now.
@get2sammyb Really cool to look at your old site. I was also busy making websites back when I was 13. I remember I found the website (Geocities of course) back on Archive or something once, but I seem to have lost it now unfortunately.
@Th3solution Well, Playstation had... Resident Evil 7 VR (exclusive), Nier: Automata (console exclusive), Persona 5 (exclusive), Hellblade (console exclusive), Horizon (Sony published). It's just terribly unfortunate that the latter didn't get any of the awards, but the others did.
@Kidfried RE7 VR is a 'timed' exclusive and expected to be on PC in the next month or two. Nier and Hellblade are also on PC. I find it funny that when Xbox exclusives are discussed, they have NO exclusives because they are on PC or timed, yet games like these are 'claimed' by PS owners as 'exclusives'.
To say Sony didn't get much love though is also wrong - just because they didn't win in every category they had games in, the fact that they had a plethora of nominations - meaning that they were regarded in the top 5/6 games in each category, inc 3 out of 5 of the 'most anticipated' games, shows the strength of the portfolio. Its still an honour to be nominated, to be recognised as one of the 'best' games released.
If you were to run a Marathon, you would be proud to finish in the top 5 with so many other competitors - ahead of some very strong ones too who didn't even make the top 5.
A pessimist is just an optimist with experience!
Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??
Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...
@BAMozzy True. And it makes it seem even more lopsided taking into account that NieR and Hellblade are available on PC. Persona took an award but the flagship exclusive of the year for Sony didn’t win anything. Oh well. I won’t let it alter my enjoyment of these awesome games. It’s just a nice little perk for the developers to get some recognition as the winner.
And it is also true that Sony did get a lot of nominations though, which is good enough for me. I’ll take quantity any day.
This VR Aim Controller.
I can't believe how difficult I found the process of buying this thing.
I went all digital with VR. So I bought Farpoint with the intent of buying a standalone VR aim controller on launch day.
Wrong. Only available bundled .
Fair enough I thought. I'll support the medium and wait for a standalone controller. That time never came.
Fine, I'll get the Bravo Team bundle.
Then that got delayed .
Annoyed I decided to cut my loses. Amazon got a few Farpoint bundles back in over the holidays. I bought one with the intent of trading in Farpoint, as I already own it digitally.
Chose Express next day delivery.
Item never arrived.
Amazon says it's been fulfilled.
Track my package (DPD) and apparently it was delivered & left in front of my door...
Call Amazon, they tell me it's at a DPD Depot...
Call DPD, they tell me it was left in front of the property & they had visual evidence (picture of door)...
Tell them I haven't got it, they look up my address on google maps (talk about professionalism) & by chance mention a road that sounds similar to mine that was within the post code.
They tell me to ring Amazon & launch an investigation as their hands are tied...
At this point I go 'sod it' go to that road the DPD phone attendee had mentioned & I find...THAT DOOR.
Knock on the door & I finally receive my VR Aim Controller.
Wasted the entire day away chasing down a package & now I'm at work.
Long story short. Don't buy digital.
FML.
