Sony has confirmed it's starting 2024 with a bang, as a new State of Play show will see us into the start of February, just as many of the PS5 titles it's struck marketing deals with are set to release. The firm has confirmed over 15 PS5, PSVR2 games will appear within a 45-minute timespan, opening the floodgates to speculation attempting to guess what they might be. With the livestream set for tomorrow night, this article is designed to set your expectations, looking at what we know will be part of the digital showcase and a set of realistic predictions for the unknown quantities.
What We Know: Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade
In the PlayStation Blog post announcing the State of Play livestream, Sony confirmed two of the games it's classing as first-party releases will be in attendance: Rise of the Ronin and Stellar Blade. We already have a March 2024 release date set for the former while the latter only has a launch window of this year; it seems likely that will change by the event's end. We expect fresh Rise of the Ronin gameplay — perhaps with something new to drop like a PS5 demo — along with a Stellar Blade release date. A launch in April has been floated on the Internet, though that's obviously not been confirmed at the time of writing.
What We Know: PSVR2
There will be new PSVR2 games featured in the State of Play tomorrow night, but that's as far as Sony has gone in any detail sharing. There is a rumour floating about of a new Metro title set in VR, which could be revealed for PSVR2. That would make for an exciting moment for the headset, though fans of the device will likely need a bit more to come away satisfied.
What We Probably Know: Death Stranding 2... On the Beach?
With Hideo Kojima himself teasing the State of Play show on Instagram, it seems like Death Stranding 2 being part of the show is already a foregone conclusion. The PS5 exclusive hasn't been seen since its announcement in December 2022, during which time it's reportedly picked up the subtitle On the Beach. It seems likely this will be revealed during the State of Play, and given we're so early in the year, perhaps we see a 2024 release window at the very least? Sony doesn't have anything slated beyond March right now, so something needs to fill those gaps.
What We Probably Know: Concord, Until Dawn
More rumours from reliable sources suggest multiplayer FPS Concord will be part of the livestream, and so too will a PS5, PC port of PS4 horror classic Until Dawn. The former is apparently revealing gameplay and its characters during the event, while the Supermassive Games title is a bit of an unknown — it's not clear yet whether this is just a simple remaster of a full-on remake. It sounds like all will be revealed during the State of Play.
What We Might Know: Judas, Silent Hill 2, Sonic Generations
In classic insider style, a silly little poem has been posted online by someone who claims to be in the know, teasing what will be part of the showcase. They hint at a remaster of Sonic Generations getting announced, a Silent Hill 2 remake re-reveal, and a new look at Ken Levine's (BioShock) next game Judas. We wouldn't put anywhere near as much trust in these claims as the ones above, but they are reveals that would nicely flesh out a State of Play in between the big, in-depth looks dedicated to Rise of the Ronin and Stellar Blade. Anticipate them with caution.
What We Don't Know: The Unknown
All of the above would make for a fantastic State of Play showcase, but given nine titles are suggested above and Sony is saying to expect more than 15, it's always the unknown factor that proves the most exciting. Since this isn't a PlayStation Showcase, you shouldn't expect any big first-party experiences like a Ghost of Tsushima 2 or something out of Naughty Dog to be announced. However, this is shaping up to be a meaty State of Play — even if all the above is confirmed, there'll still be more games on top.
Remember to always keep your expectations in check, but the rumblings are this is going to be a bigger State of Play than most, so Sony could have some exciting surprises up its sleeve. There'll likely be a few indie games thrown in there (Little Devil Inside, anyone), but what else? Let's hope the wait has been worth it.
How excited are you for the next State of Play livestream? Do you think Sony has prepped a banger or is everyone going to end up disappointed again? Keep your expectations in check in the comments below.

A load of games we’ve already heard about unfortunately
I'm planning to buy into a VR platform this year, so if they can showcase some stellar VR titles (don't even have to be exclusives for my tastes) to help me decide if I should go PSVR2 or Quest 3... that'd be awesome. Because I am very torn.
I predict a plus update, tomorrow is when we get the essential line up, but we might get extra as well. A previous sop showed the extra games I'm advance. I also predict astrobot rescue mission psvr2 remaster.
As part of their live service initiative they will unveil the new PlayStation Home!
You guys not even mentioning Wolverine in the article makes me not want to even watch it.😢
@Jill_Sandwich actually would want this. Could be done well if they didn't cancel all the live games 😂
A proper look at Rise of the Ronin would leave me personally more than satisfied. I’d be excited to see more from Death Stranding 2 and Silent Hill 2. Dream scenario would give us a peek at whatever Santa Monica Studio has been cooking up in God of War’s shadow.
PSVR2 is dead a metro game on there would be a waste
@rjejr well according to the insomniac leak Wolverine isn’t due until 2026, so it’s very unlikely that it’d feature. Insomniacs next game will be Venom in 2025.
@MFTWrecks I think they're saving their bigger VR titles for a proper showcase later this year. I would assume this is the place for stuff like a new Astro game and such.
A massive chunk of this surely will be on ff7r2
Splinter Cell release date!
I can’t believe there isn’t one single SC game on ps5 right now… I’m frothing at the mouth for that remake…
I feel this state of play will be better than the last one, yet still end up being disappointing.
Already looking more forward to this SoP than I was the Xbox Developer Direct!
As I've said in other comment sections, Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin alone make me far more interested in this State of Play than I normally would be. Anything else that interests me is just icing on the cake, especially Death Stranding 2 and Judas. With a line-up like that, I don't even care if they don't reveal anything new.
Probably nothing for me, that’s maybe my fault as I yearn for Sony AAA studio campaign games.
Last of us, uncharted, R&C, Ghost of T, Days gone , GOW etc, or a new ip at that level.
You get the idea.
The only hope I have is Ronin comes really good and is definitely not a souls like.
Final fantasy does nothing for me even after trying so hard.
The Xbox direct didn’t do it for me either really.
Hellblade 2 no
Avowed no
Indy, well it went first person.
Nintendo, will have to wait and see.
Where have the days gone when I was getting a new uncharted, a new Mario 3d platform, a new gears of war. All in the same year at one point ages ago.
The gaming industry is definitely not what it used to be.
@MFTWrecks In the best case there will be one psvr2 game of a similar scope as resident evil village / 4 remake or gran turismo 7. It is still a very small psvr2 player base. Thus, huge investments in psvr2 content is unlikely. If there is nothing in the current catalogue you fancy, the state of play will most likely not turn You over.
If you go quest2 You save a lot money, if You go quest3 You miss the psvr2 exclusives and will often get new multiplatform vr titles earlier. Most titles look better (often significantly better) on psvr2 ... after some patches. If You are more thrilled by the few quest exclusive titles than the few psvr2 exclusives, then a quest3 is probably a good choice. It is amazing what the developers manage to do with a mobile processor, but it is still low poly graphic with little visual effects. On the psvr2 side, first the processing power is multiple times larger and on top a significant amount of computing resources can be saved by the eye tracking assisted foveated rendering, which allows for titles like gt7, re4, re8 to look very close to the flat screen version, in some cases eventually even better. PSVR2 has this enormous potential ... it just needs to be exploited by developers.
Imagine if this had a release date for both Silksong and the Elden Ring Erdtree DLC.
It won't happen, but that would make this the greatest State of Play imaginable.
I think people need to keep their expectations realistic, don't go expecting new AAA first party announcements. I'm happy with what's been heavily rumoured to be included, especially Stellar Blade and Judas. Although I wouldn't mind an update on Little Devil Inside.
DualSense V2 anyone?
I'm going to predict around 6 games are PSVR2. While September only had 2 PSVR2 games (Ghostbusters and RE4 VR mode), that State of Play was only for already announced games. The February 2023 State of Play and May 2023 showcase which didn't have that restriction, had 6 games each for PSVR2.
@OldGamer999 I am right there with ya man. Really hoping for Bend to announce their new game soon….
I'm really hoping for an announcement of a full fat ASTRO game. Team Asobi mentioned a couple years back they were working on their biggest game yet.. but haven't heard anymore. Also with the feeling they need to win the hard-core crowd back a bit.. a bloodborne remaster.. leading to an eventual sequel? Wishful thinking.
@colonelkilgore Thanks. I wasn't really expecting it to be featured, just hoping that they hadn't forgotten about it so that we could get something besides the name. If it's really not until 2026, so more than 2 years, 24 months, away they really did announce it too soon. I hate it when they do that. 😝
People always set unrealistic expectations to this.
Rise of the Ronin and FFVII Rebirth are suffcient to entertain me in this show. I hope for news about the Elden Ring DLC or any first party games that are not live service crap.
Just please no more Remasters.
At this rate Sony will "resell" its entire first-party PS4 library back to us as PS5 "Remasters" - despite already enhancing PS4 games running via backwards compatibility.
Im hoping for a sea of thieves PlayStation announcement!
I don't really see why people are excited about Stellar Blade. Am I missing something?
I'm hoping for at least one 2D to VR port and an Until Dawn/Rush of Blood combo for PS5/PSVR2.
PS5 and PSVR2 are a laughingstock in terms of exclusives. They need to tease something big here or more will opt for Steam versions of multiplats. I'm gaming on PC more than I ever thought I would and I'm not the only one.
@LazyLombax
Hoping we will get something on that level from Sony studios, but I don’t think we will.
@VaultGuy415
I get what you mean, the first two years of PS5 was great for me. And my most played console for two years.
Last year 2023 I only spent 35 hours playing on PS5 And that was HFW burning shores and few other bits. Compared to Xbox 200 hours, Switch 400 hours. That’s a massive turn a round from 2021 and 2022.
And I can’t see this year getting any better for me on the PS5. But I really hope it does.
Its definitely gonna be fun.i cant wait to watch the state of play.word up son
@GamingFan4Lyf I mean the switch is basically a Wii U and 3ds with your logic.
@OldGamer999 Concord Is from a first party studio but most people write the game off because it's not a single player game.
If Ronin is anything like WoLong I’m out of buying it. Been playing WoLong the past few days and it’s easily the weakest Team Ninja game I’ve played.
Ff7 surely? Not like I need to see it, but it’s going to be shown.
Wolverine maybe? I know it’s ages off, but after the leak recently they may choose to show off some kind of trailer?
I hope the Rise of the Ronin segment makes up for the last trailer. Earlier previews showed a lot of unique and interesting gameplay mechanics. The last showing leaned too heavily on the Souls like aspects. Please don’t let this end up being just another Souls like.
Id imagine all the leaks will come true as its from a reputable leaker. As for other titles, there's a few things still left on the table from past SOP's, where Braid anniversary, Little Devil inside, Synduality? We might see some launch trailers for Foamstars or Pacific Drive? Capcom usually turns up, so time for Pragmata?
I just hope there's a big surprise or 2, but honestly with what's leaked its already looking like the best SOP ever
Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin is enough for me, anything else is a bonus
If they announce Alyx I reckon VR2 will sell a fair few off the back of it 👌🤞
@MFTWrecks Quest 3 bud 👍 if your set on the psvr2 you might as well wait for the inevitable price drop...
@Vivisapprentice capcom maybe another update on MH wilds?
@PsBoxSwitchOwner
Potentially but might be too soon as its a 2025 release
@Areus
Yeah I’m a single player campaign junky really, that’s what happens when you brought up on Sony AAA campaign games and Nintendo with few of the older Xbox titles like gears of war.
@Stevemalkpus
Right with you, definitely don’t want a souls like game for Ronin.
@GamingFan4Lyf they're even doing it with consoles, I've heard the ps5 pro will just be a ps5 with better graphics...lazy
If Ronin ends up being what I hope, a kind of ghost of tsushima with Nioh combat difficulty and depth, this should be awesome.
What gets me just how many person hours and time have Naughty had since their last games, considering they are supposed to have 2 large teams.
Lost legacy 2017
Last of us 2 2020
And nothing since not a whisper apart from remakes. How much time must of got wasted on the gaas.
@OldGamer999 it seems all they care about these days are mobile games and TV/Movie adaptions.
@LazyLombax
See my post above yours, Naughty Dog could have given us a big PS5 AAA for release probably last year or even this year.
I have to agree with some of the comments here, I hope Rise of the Ronin isn't a Souls game in terms of difficulty.
Also looking at some of the rumours for tomorrow, they mention "Kojimas Dream" which apparently his dream is to make a movie, which got confirmed earlier this month that it's actually in the process. So maybe we will get a sneak peak of his film tomorrow along side the Death Stranding 2 trailer.
@OldGamer999 none, they confirmed they have 2 games being worked on atm, and what they had working on the gaas was completely separate.
@OldGamer999 I wouldn't be surprised if 50% of the Naughty dog team worked on the Online game and the other 50% worked on the two Remasters/Remakes. But now they have 100% back to working on brand new Single player games so hopefully they atleast announce what they are working on soon with a teaser trailer, but won't be releasing for another 3-4 years.
I'm happy we're getting extended looks at Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin (especially the former), but hopefully we at least get something that we didn't already know about (and not just some throwaway game).
I'll still be happier with this show than most of PlayStation's of late even if most of the best games are ones we already knew about, but sadly that's still an improvement over what they've done over the last year or so.
Really hoping to see more from Lost Soul Aside too.
This is shaping up to be a good show. 15 or more games is a lot for 40 minutes and there are going to be some real heavy hitters. I hope Stellar Blade impresses.
@UltimateOtaku91 i think its closer then that , at least one of their games
Looking forward to more info on Ronin, stellar blade and perhaps silent hill 2. I would love some surprises and odd ball games, but Sony doesn't really do that anymore, and if they'd decide to come with a surprise, some attention wh**e leaker will spill the beans. Oh how I miss good old E3.
@UltimateOtaku91
You probably right, such a shame really.
@twitchtvpat
Well we have seen zero for many many years from them and that’s doesn’t seem good at all.
8 whole years later this year since uncharted 4
4 since last of us 2.
That’s a dam long time for two big teams.
I think (or maybe hope) we may see some MGS Delta
@PsBoxSwitchOwner No new Wilds info until Summer Games Fest. Try to solo Alatreon and Fatalis before then!
Looking forward to the Rise of The Ronin showing.. and for those worried about Souls Like, no need it has already been confirmed that it will have difficulty options and layers of combat depending on your playstyle.
https://gameranx.com/updates/id/485674/article/rise-of-the-ronin-to-have-three-difficulty-modes/
You know what whacked game development Covid and that is totally understandable.
But it is the work from home gang fallout that is happening right now.
My company do, I don’t. And it takes longer to get things done, especially in the game industry when producing a game is a very collaborative process. Additionally more gen z moving up the work place isn’t helping either. Some have totally different temperament to work compared to my older generation.
Of course there will be exceptions, but when you read up on and data about working from home and also gen z, no wonder things take longer now.
@OldGamer999 people expect something great every time , and if its true they are working on two big projects , i'd rather they take their time and show off something when they are ready to. the fact that not much has been leaked shows how tight lipped they've been , and i think it will be well worth the wait.
@OldGamer999 to add to my last post , they've also said they removed time crunch restrictions , in order to release games so quickly in the past they were working 60-80 hours a week.
@MFTWrecks The Metro VR games will also be on Quest
@Jay767 I don’t like it when Nintendo does remasters of Wii U games either.
The only remasters I bought were Link’s Awakening and Super Mario RPG because I missed them on their first run (same reason I got Demons’ Souls on PS5).
I got Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, too, but that was for my daughter to play as I don’t have a Wii U anymore.
Selling “Remaster” games that can still be played on the same platform is just crazy. The fact people just accept it (and even welcome it) is even crazier!
I bought a PS5 for PS5 games, not PS4 remasters that I can still played with a boost.
I may well have the entire year of gaming planned out after this State of Play. Between the Developer Direct and the rumors here, Switch 2 can wait.
Sick of hearing about remasters. Give us exclusive PS5 games.
@twitchtvpat
I don’t doubt it will be worth the wait, to a point.
But there is only so much waiting one can do 😂
@GamingFan4Lyf
Totally agree new PS5 games required.
Enough is enough with these dam remasters on all three consoles.
I have been gaming for decades and this current PS5 and Series x generation overall after three years, seems to be worst I can remember.
@OldGamer999 trust me i hate waiting as much as every one else , and want these things to be announced , but when that naughty dog logo pops up in the trailer people are going to go crazy.
@twitchtvpat
It just seems such a long time and I can’t work out why it takes even longer than ever in the game industry to develop games.
I'm definitely managed my expectations, especially as a PSVR2 owner. I'm imagine we'll get an update on a couple of previously announced titles like Journey to Foundation and maybe Behemoth. Will be fun to get a new look at Stellar Blade after a while though, interested in seeing how that one turns out as the previous trailers looked like fun.
Very boring. Hopefully something comes out better than this.
Like some have said — even just a deeper look at one or two of these games would make it all worthwhile for me.
I guess I’ve been conditioned by Sony to have low expectations.
Does Little Devil Inside exist anymore?
Socom trilogy remastered with new online service. All maps are playable 1-3. Boom. Done deal. Thank you
Sony needs to lock in Half Life Alyx as a PSVR2 title at some point to make it more attractive (should've been a launch title). And FFS developers need to port over more PSVR games that could be played with the Dualshock 4, like the Wipeout Omega Collection and Star Wars Squadrons, for example... but I digress. I'm mildly excited for the SoP!
It has been YEARS since we got a great SOP.
As has been mentioned by Pushsquare before, it seems Sony doesn’t know how to get the format right.
When you look at what’s potentially going to be shown, it doesn’t inspire confidence.
I’d go into this with no expectations and hope a game or two catches your fancy.
I want wolverine, venon, new bioshock game, new ico game, bloodborne remake, marathon, some new ips and thats it, no more than that.
@XboxistheBestBox nothings been announced to be shown , this is just an opinion piece not an announcement list.
I just expect nothing, get nothing and give them money anyway. It’s great arrangement we have. 😜
A lot of negative hype being spun as always. The type of gamer that "hasn't got anything to play" on PS5 shouldn't really exist coming off such an amazing year for gaming. Yet here we are, people are declaring the death of PS5 and PSVR2 left and right. And yet no one - not a single one - is spelling doom for Haven and FairGame$ which makes me so disappointed with all the naysayers. Low hanging fruit ain't good enough for ya!
FF7 Rebirth Demo
SH2 Date + Demo
A new VR2 game from Sony Studios would be nice
Edit: And something new from a Sony Studio for the PS5. It is great they are filling gaps with some exclusive 3rd party stuff, but it should be about time we start seeing something from future 1st party studios.
Imagine Little Devil Inside popped up again... that would be welcome. I'm hoping for an update on Plucky Squire and some more PSVR2 stuff
