Of the modern-era Sonic games, a handful are generally favoured by fans, and Sonic Generations is certainly one of them. Released to celebrate the SEGA mascot's 20th anniversary, the PS3 game combines the usual 3D stages with throwback side-scrolling levels, revisiting various zones from previous entries. It's thought to be one of the best-playing 3D titles, but access to the game is limited — especially if you're only rocking a PS4 or PS5. That may be about to change, however, if we're to believe the current rumour mill.
This stems from a tweet by XboxEra co-founder Nick Baker, in which he hints at several games making an appearance during the imminent State of Play presentation. The phrase "Sonic will live in the shadow of his generation" has got fans of the blue blur all aflutter:
Further to this, another X user, "video game researcher" Kurakasis, claims the game will be named Sonic x Shadow Generations.
It's always easy to hand-wave rumours like this, but Baker has been proven right before, so it's quite likely we'll be seeing some Sonic when the State of Play lands. Either way, it's not long until we find out for sure.

I'd be down for anything Generations related. Love that game!
Also not related to Sonic but he mentions the metro at the end there. Could it be a Metro 4 reveal? That would be great to see as well!
A game centered around Shadow the hedgehog? Color me intrigued.
It would be fun to actually play with him, as an antihero...
like a Darth Vader game we never (properly) had.
If it's something new then fine. A port of Sonic Generations would be completely pointless for me as I have it and have played it recently on Series X.
Hopefully it'll be more than that.
So "confirming" appearances of:
Rise of the Ronin
Death Steanding 2
FF7 Rebirth
Kojima's Dream being a horror game, maybe?
Sonic Generations
Silent Hill 2
Until Dawn Re-Release
New Metro Game
Judas
9 of the 15+ games being shown off
@Shinnok789 They released a Shadow-focused game before and it was a disaster.
@CKFilms Kojima's Dream is Norman Reedus Simulator for PSVR2
@Rob3008 Here's hoping they've learned their lesson.
'Cause if done right, a darker tone spinoff would be a very good addition to the franchise.
It sounds like this State of Play will make me glad I asked for PS gift cards for my birthday and received them. Looks like it’s time for a mass pre-order, perhaps!
Sonic x Shadow Generations
Really leaning into that movie 3 hype, huh? Sega missed the boat by not having some type of new release to tie into the first two films. A remaster of one of the more beloved modern games with new Shadow content (hopefully not JUST a skin, but something more akin to the DLC in Forces - but better, like a handful of new zones that have relevance to the character) would do well.
If you put any stock into what Zippo says, there might even be a brand new title later in the year that also has a big Shadow focus.
I'm just hoping they've learned their lesson from handing the Sonic Colours Remaster off to an outsourced developer with a spotty track record. Do it in house, update it to Hedgehog Engine 2, give it the polish it deserves.
@Czar_Khastik finally, some more PSVR2 love 🤣
It would be cool if true, one of my favourite Sonic games and also it's nice seeing more games from 7th gen rescued. Mentioning Shadow makes me wonder if they may be adding in the 3DS exclusive content. The PS3/360/PC and 3DS had almost completely different stage and boss lists of which 3DS SA2 content was Shadow focused.
The possibility of a new metro game should have been the lead even if it could turn out to be a subway simulation game.
Sonic Generations, now with added generations!
Though it must be said, since it was released 12 years ago, we've had Frontiers, Superstars, Boom and Mania that could all contribute levels and characters. The game can be bigger than ever now!
Sonic Generations already had pretty advanced visuals for the time and the PC version still looks great. One big improvement it desperately needs is in its 2D controls and it they implement those from the recent Sonic game, then that alone would be a massive improvement
Why make any new good games when you can Remaster old games this is a pointless Remaster to me
Oooh awesome.
Really hope for remasters of Sonic Shuffle, Sonic Adventure 1&2 more though
Generations is a great game. Hopefully a remaster would include content from the games that have come out since, even the lame ones.
@Rob3008 it did have some great music though. Maybe the only real consistently good thing about sonic games of the time
I know I probably stand alone on this hill.. but.. I wouldn’t notice if the name Sonic the Hedgehog was never mentioned in gaming/media again.. I personally feel like the franchise is dying and grasping for life
@Korgon The rumours are it's called Metro Awakening for the PSVR2, however, it's not been ruled out that it's a hybrid title so it can be played both 2d and VR as with the last Resi Evil games. Which would be the best of both worlds, though it's not been mentioned if it's a fully fledged sequel.
Fingers crossed!
It can also be Sonic generations 2. If it's a remaster I hope they will add other playable characters like tails and knuckles.
Yes pleas, Generations at 4K 60.... I know it's already available on Xbox and PC bt I want it on PlayStation
Nice, I will play this on playstation portal and someone will be missing out on here like a certain person 🤣
Generations is a favorite of mine, but its one of the last Sonic games that needs a remaster imo. They better include a fair share of additions in this one that are good enough to consider a buy again, and of course not screw this up like with Colors Ultimate.
How does one milk a hedgehog? Just ask Sega; they've been mastering the technique for decades now.
Love this game and it’s awesome at 60 FPS on Series X. So would be great if it got an official update for PlayStation as well.
extremely disappointing; unleashed is a better game and its a shame they keep avoiding it. my theory is that its such a technical spectacle and so demanding on hardware that they dont want to go through the efforts of porting it. i already have generations on PC @ high resolution and frames, and my entire time of playing through it , i couldnt stop thinking about unleashed and how much better it would be if it was ported.
please just port unleashed ffs
@ConsoleGamer86 when you think about it, generations itself is already a rehash remaster, lol.
overrated game
Really wish they would remaster Skies of Arcadia
