The extra modes, features and levels are a tasty addition as is the option to play 4k, 40fps (the visuals are near perfect now, especially the LOD stuff). Better animation sampling too.

Every game deserves a 40fps mode 😔

Think of GoW free DLC. The new mode should be a free upgrade instead of 10 bucks.

With a TV that does 120hz VRR the fidelity setting with frame rate unlocked is a dream running at full 4K and a frame rate above 60fps.
But you have to have the right tv to do it, which I do.
That’s really where these remasters sit at their best.

It’s weird they call it a 40hz mode but if you have the right tv for it 120hz with VRR, frame rate unlocked in game settings.
I’m hitting way above 40fps which is even better.

A big ole 7 for me. Still looks great and plays as well as ever but the hackneyed, drawn out story just reminds me of how much better it could have been had they reigned in druckmann

@LifeGirl I mean, I'm being hyperbolic with 99.9%. I just mean the game is near perfect. I rated it 9 here considering it's a remastered package - there's room for more graphical bells and whistles for sure.

People can feel however they want about the game but in my opinion it's often people just trying to make a point by voting 1/10. How many games are even deserving of a 1/10 score? 😂 I sense a little bit of bias in those cases. And no, I'm not randomly biased towards TLOU for some fanboy or political reason. I played the game and loved it 🤷

I seriously dislike football manager and find it eternally boring but I'm not gonna go and rate it 1/10... because 99.9% of games (😉) have at least some redeeming features.

After playing no return, I really feel sony made a mistake of cancelling the online game. Tlou part 2 combat is great.

It's a 10/10 game made even better than ever. People are free to like to it less than that, but that does not change the fact the game is an objective masterpiece.

For the technical side of things, 10/10.
For the story and pacing, 7/10
So a solid 8.5 for me

...The game is EPIC. The remastered game along with the 3D sound in the headphones is just sublime. Beautiful graphics along great gameplay, the movement of the enemies and the mix of infected and human enemies is perfect.. (apart from me having to open drawers and cupboards when there's f**k all in em) the game is a masterpiece..

@OldGamer999 @Weebleman pretty sure it runs at a capped 40fps, not completely unlocked in the fidelity mode 🤔 if you're hitting over 60 frames then you're in the unlocked performance mode.

Edit: yeah I checked. The fidelity mode in 'uncapped' actually makes it a 40fps cap. The higher frames are in the performance unlocked mode. Personally I much prefer the extra detail at native 4k, 40fps rather than going for 60+ frames at 1440p upscaled - just personal choice as either way is a better way to play than the OG.

I love TLOU but not being biased and voting on the remastered version itself, I would give a score less of the original. I gave 8. They could have added a bit more to it in my opinion to make it worth a remaster not too long after the original. No return is good but completed in a few days and doesn't keep me interested to keep playing that mode. Just through the game again on grounded+

1/10s are just the people who can't get over him been done by a female (he deserved it) it was coming eventually.
Great game, great gameplay, only thing needs fixing would be pacing that's about it, And the added No Return is fantastic, hope they add more content for it over time

Judging it on its own merits I give it a 10 as its a fantastic game, that plays great and looks amazing

Judging it purely as a remaster and how much of an upgrade it is, then it's probably a 3 as it's basically the same. If you're a newcomer then it's a great game and no reason not to buy the PS5 version, if you already have the PS4 game just be aware this looks and plays identically to that version on the PS5 but with some extra content outside rhe main game

I put 9/10 just as it's the same 10/10 out of 10 game again and loses a point just as it's something I've played before and as such loses that impact

It was a 1 for me. Asking me to play from the perspective of an unlikeable psychopath is bad enough. The laughably bad story that stumbles along for a dozen hours more than it deserves was the finisher. A perfect example of not to do when creating a follow up to one of the greatest games of all time.

@Uromastryx Awful nice straw man you've constructed. I haven't heard a single person complain about Joel being killed by a woman. I have heard tons of legitimate complaints about plot holes, characters acting out of character for plot contrivance, and a narrative structure that absolutely doesn't.

But why engage with the things people actually say when you can just sit up on your high horse and accuse them of being mysogynists.

Abby and Ellie are supposed to be mirrored characters. Their flaws are basically identical - becoming hate-filled and frothing at the mouth for revenge. You could say they both have 'psychopathic' traits but they clearly aren't as they both display countless acts of altruistic affection and generosity. They both acted entirely in character considering what they went through since the OG game. For me the context is there for such character evolution.

The whole mirrored story was fantastic imo. I can understand why some may not have liked it though 🤷 it was a risky manoeuvre to pull off. For me, it was an awesome execution.

3. I never said Ellie wasn't a psycho. I said that the characters acted out of their established context which would include the entirely new horrible person that Ellie is in the game.
4. Nothing in the game (especially the theme of revenge) works which is why I gave it a 1.

@LN78 hmm. Most of these seem to be narrative choices the player didn't like 🤔 which is fair enough, but to me most of these points aren't really completely illogical plot holes. I guess it really is a marmite game.

@LN78 Hmm I still think these are just minor narrative stretches at the most. There can be explanations for all of them. I don't think any are actually objective points for impossible situations.

Still, if they stick out to you then that's not gonna help your experience lol.

@LN78 We don't know if it was the first encounter with people in that journey. There could easily have been other meeting or fightings.
They also knew about, and were tracking, a settlement out West in that area.

So it's a surprising coincidence but I think it almost serves the story as it's the whole "is this fate?" kinda thing. May not resonate with you but that doesn't trigger my plot-hole alarm. And I'm usually quite picky.

Btw I'm not blindly defending the game/in denial about it's narrative quality just to fanboy over it 😂 I genuinely found it to have fantastic writing, pacing and gameplay.

@LN78 I agree but without 'suspension of disbelief', not only this game, but most other games, most other works of fiction and movies in fact, wouldn't really work!

@LN78 Honestly, I don't think so. I'm usually more into the narrative in games than combat or whatever. I enjoy good writing (in all media) and the delivery. I'm not ignorant to the game's faults either, of which there are a few - all of them minor enough to not detract from the overall experience.

I don't think either of us are in the right/wrong, it just resonated for me and not for you. 🤷 Most of those 'holes' weren't even holes and the couple that are closest can still be written-off coincidence/ luck. There's quite a few dialogue points about luck and fate in the game. But yeah, if you didn't enjoy it then that's fine by me 😌

@LN78 Oh I have 😂 I've played the game many, many times.

Overall, I think it's fantastic as a game, but they made a few choices that significantly exacerbated the narrative "issues" that many have with it. I have my own minor quibbles with the writing, though I think it's largely coherent, feels decently realistic (for a post apocalyptic zombie game, i mean, let's be real here), and the major arcs make sense narratively. That said, I think we can all understand why some people don't like it - the narrative choices were designed to push the limit of what an audience is willing to accept, and, well, that's pretty much how it played out.

My actual complaints come down to (1) the lack of player choice (when so much of the narrative is designed to make you feel bad about violence and pursuing revenge at any cost, this would be a lot more effective if you could make different choices at key points) and (2) the fact that the game is simply too long, which exacerbates the narrative issues and lack of player autonomy by forcing you to slog through so much misery. I think I enjoyed the game more than the Kotaku reviewer did, but I agreed with them that the narrative was ultimately pretty heavy-handed in that regard. But let's not forget that TLOU1 was every bit as heavy handed and emotionally manipulative, so those were pretty much table stakes coming in. I just think TLOU1 overcame those issues because the game was the exact right length, and the character's central bond made the experience easier to relate to.

As for the remaster: excellent stuff all around, absolutely worth $10, and No Return is addictive as hell. I can't compete at the harder difficulties so I know I'll eventually get sick of it, but it's a blast to pop off a quick run (or 5).

I love Joel. One of my favorite video games character ever, but people just ignore all the terrible things he has done.

@Splat One aspect of the show that I liked was that they made it even clearer that he was a Hunter before settling into a less overtly evil life as a smuggler. The game alludes to it in Boston and mentions it in passing in Pittsburgh, but it never really lets you sit with that fact or dwell on what it means.

Have you tried it out? It's bang in the middle of 30-60 but the latency feels is far closer to 60fps in reality. Responsive performance and all the graphical bells and whistles of the 30fps options. I'd deffo recommend it if you have a 120hz TV sad that more games don't support it.

Naughty dog, sony's star studio, is going to release ONE game this generation and everybody knows what it's going to be.

I personally rate this remaster as a 4/10. The game itself and it's original ps5 patch were both excellently implemented, but there is a big BUT here. I only recently 6 months ago bought a PS5 as I wanted to play this game as I didn't get the chance to play TLOU2 when it originally released. I reached the point where it switches to Abby and I find from then I have to force myself to play it, I have no interest in playing that character. So I still have not finished the game. The first one was riveting, so disappointed. I am not enjoying the Abby levels at all. Now a remaster after such a short time since release? This is not in my view much of a change and you can see why with the DF review. What was needed was further true investment in TLOU world and a TLOU3 to give fans something new to enjoy. Stop remastering games for the sake of it and give us new content to love. Also, if you are going to remaster to use the true power of the PS5, it should be to a locked 60 without relying on VRR as not everyone has got this, which is another fail. You can't have rose tinted glasses to look at a game so recently released. Just give us something new and stop wasting resources before even more Devs are laid off. Palworld showed the gaming industry that it's fun games that sell, not remasters and in the end it's sales that support studios which then make new games for us to enjoy. If the resources wasted on TLOU2 remastered had been used for TLOU3 we would at least be closer to release of a new game more people would buy.

This is a 10.

Arguably, the TLOU2re raises the bar SO HIGH, it changes the criteria for grading future 10 scores.

And maybe that is what all 10's should have as a criteria.

I can appreciate a lot but some story choices and the bloated feeling towards the end sour it for me.

Thank God for that leak all those years ago. It saved me money and time. It also made me decide not to give a single cent of my hard-earned money to Naughty Dog ever again. Looking at what they've been doing since the release of TLOU2, I'm happy I made that decision.

I'm just sad that after the masterpiece of TLOU, we got... this. And it apparently won't get any better.

It's a 9 score game for me.
It's not perfect but it certainly doesn't deserve all the hate, the threats against the devs and the antagonism it received. Some gamers out there really need to get a life... it's a game, you're confusing effing fiction with reality... If you don't like the story then cut the crap and move on, spare "the rest of us" the needless social media drama...

As for the remaster.... since on the PS5 the graphical improvements are next to zero, it's not worth it for me right now... The upcoming PC port will have better graphics, and include every piece of content, gonna get that one at a discount somewhere down the line.

My review of TLOU Part II (bearing in mind the original game is imho an undisputed masterpiece) is: Overly and badly written, The Last Of Us Part II is a classic case of a needless sequel.

Everything has flaws, opinions be opinions. Plot holes etc, yadda yadda. Every story ever written is contrived.
As for the game itself, brilliant imo. Certainly in my top 10 from the past 40yrs. Nothing tops Ocarina though 😀

I have a TCL mini led qled 55 TV and I bought it for a bargain £640 some months ago.
Amazingly I didn't realise that it did 120 and 144 if you've got a pc to plug in it, which I don't.
I've noticed this uncapped frame rate since I've had it.
Amazing to be able to play games looking their best way above the 30fps mark.

If you still have not played it or want to avoid spoilers you literally lived under a rock and should not even be playing on a PlayStation system.

@Loamy Not a fan of the games mate A friend has been pushing them for ages but I have tried multiple times and I just think they are clunky and kinda dull. The wavy shooting alone is beyond me why anyone likes that.

I'm sure people would love to point out how uncultured and uneducated I am when it comes to analysing writing. I haven't even stated my views on each specific plot point you're presenting (why would I when you're telling me it's objectively bad writing? I can't argue against that!) and you're judging my critical thinking and acting kinda patronising because I said that for me TLOU2 has great writing and an awesome story arc, which isn't the same as saying I have ZERO issues with the writing - in fact I agreed that there are some plot reaches that require your own thought input (like 99% of stories have) - still doesn't make it objectively bad.

Sony should be ashamed of such a low effort attempt at milking people's money.
The game is IDENTICAL as the one released for the ps4. There is no explanation or reason to release this. In fact, this actually makes the game worse for me as I trust them even less than before, and that was already at an all time low.

This is why it's getting a 1 from me.
