@Bentleyma Not gonna lie, I don't know how long Relink is but P3 and IW are both kinda huge and FFVII comes out in a month - so good luck with that

@Bentleyma I'm sure your doppelganger will be able to help you play all these games!

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

Tekken 8. This will be the first fully PS5 game I've owned. Everything else has been a PS3 or PS4 game.

Mayo for Sam. Year TBC.

Downloading Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade I'm not sure if it is wise for me to go from FFXVI to FFVII as I never played any previous versions myself, so it might all be a bit much, but it looked good quality, and I can't really consider myself a true gamer unless I do try some form of FF7 myself at least once to see what I've been missing 😅

I'm quite interested to see if I recognise any remade parts of it, too, as I think I remember seeing the original game being played quite a bit at various times as a wee child, and maybe as a wee teen as well when someone had old consoles set up or something, but as a teen there's a good chance we'd have been chemically altered at the time 😁 I know for a fact the blue text boxes are embedded in my memory, and some of the character models, and a big old train, but I have no real idea as to why 😂😂😂

@Ravix They're very different games. I don't think you have to worry too much about becoming bored. Especially since VII is such a rollercoaster ride.

You're in for a treat. Remake is in my opinion one of the best games ever made. Probably top 10.

@Ravix FF7 Remake is a great game for sure, and the OG still holds up today in my opinion.

I think you have about 4 weeks-ish until FF7 Rebirth drops... so potentially you could finish Remake, and then jump straight into Rebirth at launch? (Remake is approx 40hr game, so 10hrs a week over 4 weeks is maybe doable??)

This might be controversial, but I would actually recommend watching a quick plot breakdown of the OG FF7 on Youtube or something... Without spoiling anything, Remake is a much richer experience for having a frame of reference to the original game - for reasons that will become clear once you start playing!

The combat system is pretty great as well in Remake, maybe the best in the series in fact. A mix of real-time movement and action alongside turn-based/cool-down menus (where time slows as you make your choice) really add to the excitement.

But yeah, I'd definitely say just get a grasp of the OG's plot points/story before you embark on Remake!

@CJD87 @Kidfried

I actually couldn't resist trying it out late last night 😁

It looks absolutely bloody stunning too. I feel like it looks better than FF16 (I swear 16 had a graphics downgrade since release or something though) maybe it's just because of all the lights, shadows, smoke and steam in Remake really popping on an OLED, but I really loved how it looked.

As far as a frame of reference of the story, I haven't really noticed anything lacking for me yet so will probably continue as is, nothing stood out as being a clear reason to not just absorb this story as it is. I do know that this game is basically expanding on one small section of the original though, so I won't expect a far flung adventure through the lands lol.

My only issue so far was with the guard mechanic, I was trying to dodge rockets and target locks from the scorpion bot, to no avail, but then it felt like I should be blocking rockets with my sword, and the whole fight was a bit of a mess as I had to pop a bunch of potions and revives, as my dodge rolls completely failed me haha. By the time I realised the fight was almost over so I never had a good chance to practise guarding projectiles or seeing how best to time these things without losing multiple stacks of hp first. In a way I wish I'd lost and had to redo it, rather than just getting through the fight by the skin of my teeth 😬

Is there any guard timing, or do you have to just hold the button and orient your character to face the projectiles/attacks, or does it auto face attacks if you are holding R1? I couldn't quite grasp what led to successful blocks 😆

@Ravix Glad you're enjoying it man! re the guard 'timing'... from memory I think you pretty much just hold block/R1 when you wish to block, there isn't any timing or parry mechanic IIRC.

The combat does get easier the more you get used to it, hang in there

Ravix

@CJD87 yeah, I made it out to the train, after the mako went boom, and with relative ease after picking up 'deadly dodge'. In FF16 it was press R1 as late as possible for the perfect evade, but there's none of that here, dodge roll seems more for getting good positioning and closing space to attack, and holding block is for pretty much everything else 😅 I haven't quite worked out shock troopers, but they fell all the same even though they landed some hits.

Story wise, I think I kind of know what you mean now, having seen some other people say "it won't make sense" but, knowing there is a sequel, I'm of the opinion that it doesn't matter if it makes sense yet, because some mystery to be later explained is what makes sequels appealing.

Plus, everyone has heard of Sephiroth, surely... and there has already been flashback/flashforward type teases. So I think I'll be fine with some mystery shrouded in ghostlyness.

@Ravix Yeah enjoy it! The block probably isn't that important in the grand scheme of things, and once you get healing spells and/or additional buffs you can use those to mitigate damage taken etc.

In regards to the story, there are some narrative beats/twists at the end of Remake that will land with you a lot harder if you have a bit of context regarding the sweeping plot of the original - especially some of the larger twists in the OG.

No spoilers, but I'll only say this - the Remake is not an 'exact' 1-for-1 replica of the OG game, which personally I liked....

It looks gorgeous as well, and the VA work (especially Cloud & Barrett) is incredibly strong I think... easily as good as the VA work in Baldurs

@CJD87 Shhh, that's blasphemy to say that it's a good thing that it's not a 1-for-1 remake...

@KilloWertz I can already see the pitchforks gathering outside my home...!

KilloWertz

@CJD87 Bunch of people with spiked yellow hair holding pitchforks and buster swords. One dressed up as Tifa that you thought about getting her number but then realized it wasn't worth potentially dying.

Yes, I can make it into a bigger story.

@KilloWertz Haha! Plot twist..... the Tifa cosplay is actually a daylight-dodging, basement-dwelling sweaty dude!

What was your take on Remake out of interest? (in terms of its 'NG+' approach to the OG's narrative)

CJD87

KilloWertz

@CJD87 Damn, you ruined it with that one. Funny, but still disgusting.

I loved it. It was one of my favorite games in a good long while, especially when I played it over again via the PS5 version. I never finished the original as I got stuck, and that was obviously well before the days of YouTube where you could just look up walkthroughs. I highly enjoyed the story, but even if I did finish the original, I doubt I would have wanted it to be an exact 1:1 retelling of it. Besides the obvious perks of voice acting and massively upgraded graphics, I would have not enjoyed it as much if I knew going in that I already knew everything that was going to happen.

I made my first-ever digital pre-order on PSN last week, to show support for developers Aspyr and their work on the forthcoming Tomb Raider I-III Remastered. After that PS Blog post unveiled the extent of the project, it's clear that they're passionate, well-meaning fans of the franchise, and not just chucking out another bare-bones licenced port... well, that, and there's 10% off for pre-ordering, but still.

@Max_Headroom It's normally £24.99 but if you've got an active PS Plus subscription, it drops to £22.49 when pre-ordering any time up to midnight on February 14.

At that kinda price point, I really wasn't expecting Aspyr to push the boat out. More power to 'em.
