An enormous part of the appeal when it comes to retro remasters or compilations like Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered is earning spangly new Trophies in classic games. Developer Aspyr appears to understand this, as it’s plotting almost 300 Trophies across the upcoming trilogy, according to lists published by Insider Gaming.
However, there’s a catch! While the PS4 version of the game will include three shiny Platinum pots to unlock, there’ll be zero silvery-blue gongs on PS5. This, allegedly, is due to some policy changes enforced by PlayStation which prevent multi-game lists from featuring Platinums, as previously evidenced by Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
We’ll check with Aspyr to see if this is true, but if it is, then we think Sony’s shooting itself in the foot here. Not everyone cares about Trophies, and that’s fine, but for those who do they can be a genuine selling point – and three Platinum pots would have really added to the value of Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered on PS5. If this is accurate, then we’d actually recommend buying the PS4 version and playing with backwards compatibility, as performance is unlikely to be massively affected given the nature of the games.
The Trophy lists themselves are awesome, and filled with Easter eggs, as you’d expect with so many gongs to unlock. You’ll need to beat the games in record times to get all the trinkets, and find all the collectibles, of course. To be honest, these are fun adventures to 100 per cent – but the PS5 versions will lack that added incentive if its true they don’t have Platinum pots.

PS4 version it is I guess.
Yeah, I think I'll go PS4 as well if true. Such a terrible change by Sony, though — they surely know people buy games for Trophies as they'll have data for that!
In fact, they've even made Trophies easier to earn in their first-party games, suggesting they know getting a nice Platinum is rewarding for players.
Well this just seems unnecessarily stupid.
This is a real bummer. Will the platinums work if when you buy the game on the PS5, but download the PS4 version instead? Either way, if it turns out to be true I hope there will be some kind of patch, if possible, to fix it.
@Kraven Yeah, you'll get the Platinums if you play the PS4 versions on PS5. It's really dumb!
Might not be possible to fix it as it sounds like it's not the developer's fault but a new Sony policy for PS5 games.
Never understood any games coming without Platinums. So many games I’ve 100%’ed that just have a few gold, silver and bronzes.
This is a travesty! Not like I was planning to get these platinums, but it still seems like a big mistake to lock PS5 players out of them.
Fine Sony I'll do as you say and play the PS4 versions on my PS5 🙄
This is so stupid. Why would Sony do this, and why wouldn't they put the platinums on the PS5 versions if this is the case. It doesn't make any sense.
@SoulChimera Years ago, they had a policy relating to game size and release method which determined if a game got a full Platinum list or just the "PSN" selection you refer to. Those have almost gone extinct since they relaxed Plat requirements so much, such that it's really strange when a game does it (like The Pedestrian and Synth Riders on PS5).
This supposed policy change now does explain the BS of the Uncharted PS5 release, but I really can't imagine why they wanted to make such a change. Sony themselves pioneered multiple full Plats in a single release with PS2 game remasters on PS3. What could possibly cause such an absurd change in the rules?
I dont really care about the Platinum but Sony should be way more transparent about their rules.
And especially with full releases they should give games a platinum and yes i count Tombraider as a full release.
My name is mayo or better said Platinum shovel ware gets a Platinums why don't full quality games don't explain that to me Sony.
With all this Platinum shovelware they already deminished the prestige of a Platinum anyway.
What the hell Sony! Who makes these bloody policies and why? The amount of shovelware with platinums is ridiculous, and yet they do this! Sort it out!
I came for the horror of no platinums, I stayed for the horror of speedrun trophies.
Playstation has some really dumb policies, how does it make any sense that the PS4 versions have platinums but the PS5 doesn't?
The game is supposed to come out next week and still no official gameplay trailer, now this news about the no platinum for PS5.
I was truly excited to replay these gems but things are starting to feel off about this release more and more.
Thank goodness its only 25USD with a PS+ sub so it is worth the risk but still, for me it takes a little bit of the excitement away.
Phew I was gonna preorder it last night for my PS5 , I'm glad I didn't.
To be honest because of this stupid new rule by PlayStation I'm going to be extremely petty and get it for my series X instead. Im sure they will have to close down from losing one sale 🤣🤣.
PS4 just keeps winning this year, it looks like.
So long as there is a trophy for locking winston in the freezer does a platinum really matter 😁
I'm sure platinum hunters will make up for this heartbreaking news by immediately downloading one of those all time classic Platinum hunter masterpieces like stroke a cat five times for a platinum or touch a mayo jar for one second to receive ten platinum trophies.
I'm always amazed to hear people won't buy a game they were very interested in playing simply because it doesn't have a trophy... but hey, you do you. If they gave you a thousand platinum trophies every time you patted an NPC on the head it wouldn't effect me one bit so I'm all for you being showered in the things the more merrier 👍
If this is true I'll defo be getting the PS4 version. Doubt I'll bother platinuming the games anyway, but I don't want to support these types of shenanigans. I want my PS5 platinums.
I was on the fence about this game, but now I probably won't bother
I love trophy hunting, and this pees me off
Who is smoking crack?
It's a unbelievable idiotic decision from them.
MGS Master Collection Vol 1 has 4 platinums.
There is no reason TR Remastered can't have 3 plats.
PS4 it is then...
Can someone point me to the PS4 version of this because the PS5 version is the only version on the digital store when looking in the app?
Wow. Please fix that Sony. A very strange oversight if true.
This isn’t a “policy” thing, but rather for a technical reason (or oversight probably). PS5 apps can’t have more than one trophy list tied to them but one product purchase can. In order to have multiple lists, each game in a collection needs to have a separate launcher. GTA Trilogy and MGS Master Collection both have multiple trophy lists and platinums because they utilise multiple launchers.
It’s a stupid change and Sony’s mess to start with, granted, but Aspyr chose to use one launcher instead of three so aren’t blameless here.
Hmm.. this explains why MGS Master Collection had 3 individual game files for MGS1, 2, 3 unlike the HD Collection which had it all in one file. Luckily, it's early enough to get a refund and then buy the PS4 version for the platinum since it'll play just fine on PS5.
Still no sign of a physical release, so I'll be giving this a miss until they sort that out.
@CKFilms I was thinking the same thing, where is the PS4 pre order on the PSN store as I can only find the PS5 version as well dude?
@DaveHero75 Looks like the PS5 version for preorder on PS Store will contain both PS4 and PS5 versions even if it's listed only for PS5.
@extragood you are right. Even though it is not listed as such, it does cite controller vibration for ps4 version and haptic feedback for ps5.
I'm actually surprised there is a native PS5 version. I just expected this to be a PS4 title with back compat. for the 5.
Just cancelled my preorder and got it refunded. Don't understand how it can make any sense to anyone. 100% Jim Ryan level incompetence and I'm 100% not supporting it. Vote with your wallets. If you allow stuff like this to happen then all you're doing is setting the standard for releases moving forward. This is probably why there's been so little hype and publicity around this remaster.
Like I'm not being funny but there's probably gonna be no difference between the ps4 version and the ps5 version so why would they even bother listing it as a ps5 game?
I didn't even know there was a ps4 version until I read this article.
What the actual f.
Everyone at Aspyr is gonna blame Sony, and everyone at Sony is gonna blame push square for breaking the news before the game released, but the reality is that unless we as consumers stop accepting this level of ***** then it's just gonna keep happening.
Never really understood the appeal of trophies myself, but reading the comments here I'm clearly in the minority!
Don't really care about Trophies but I was going PS4 on this anyway.
The Ryan Replacement can't come soon enough as someone needs to take the reins of the quite clearly bonkers PS management.
That’s a lot of trophies.
@GingerAsh That's a bit of an overreaction over three missing trophies. Just play the PS4 version if you're intending to get the plats.
It's listed as a PS5 game to improve PS Store listing visibility for PS5 owners. There'll also be plenty of PS4 owners who would just ignore PS4 games entirely.
As a trophy hunter who plans to platinum every Tomb Raider game in the near future, I'm just glad that Aspyr at least added a platinum trophy to each game rather than just 100% even if it is only the PS4 versions. I hope they remaster the Rogue Squadron trilogy at some point as they have expressed interest as long as there is demand.
Uncharted LoTC did have a platinum trophy tho. it was just 1 plat for both games. I don't see why there can't be a plat for all 3 TR games. That plat would be tough as nails tho!
Good. I like to see those trophy hunters suffer mwahaha 🤣 My mate will throw a hissy fit about this!
Wonder what differences, if any, between the 4 and 5 versions?
I'll just download both versions onto my PS5.
@carlos82
They seem to treat all consoles seperately depending on whether they are still making them or not. It was the same with censorship. There was a point when VITA versions would get through unmolested and the PS4 versions were mutilated.
I’ll probably still end up getting them for the PS5 for the adaptive trigger support.
Doesn’t bother me that’s no platinum’s but it’s still kinda strange that Sony decided to do this
Yeah, that's so weird. I'd just play the PS4 versions honestly. I mean extra trophies is cool, but 300 for no platinums is kinda wack imo. The collection still seems like a fun time though
