@Th3solution Heh, thanks! Was a bit of a cheeky so-and-so as a kid, but I'll take the virtual high-five.
I think a lot of people's fear around art is because of the elitism that its most ardent followers generate, whether intentionally or inadvertently. It's like that saying; everybody's got one great novel inside of them, and it's just a question of getting it out. That's where, as you say, practice can make perfect regardless of natural ability, but you've gotta really want to practice.
Either that, or collaborate with somebody and be the "ideas" guy.
So, you gave the creation stuff a try in Dreams, then? Did you try and make something, or was it more of a stick-my-head-round-the-door-and-leave kinda thing?
"We want different things, Crosshair. That doesn't mean that we have to be enemies."
@RogerRoger your story about the teacher appreciating your literal garbage art made me crease up š. It's lame that the whole year had such a negative impact on you though. I wish it was better for you.
We had a similarly mental teacher that kind of had her favourites in the class. I remember her telling the best artist in the class that he wouldn't amount to anything because all he drew was manga at the time. Now he is probably the most successful artist in our year, brief glances through his facebook page show some awards and some commissioned work.
She once put the class into pairs and asked us to draw combined self portraits š¤¦š»āāļø, the fella I was with wasn't that interested so I just drew Goku because I didn't know how to draw anything except DBZ characters at the time. The teacher didn't say anything about it, I guess she hadn't seen or heard of dragon ball Z at the time...
This teacher did kind of go off the deep end though. She was obsessed with attention seeking and and after we had left school there were random daily mail articles and TV appearances from her that just stank of attention seeking. One was a daily mail about her liking to open the door naked (with plenty of erm, pictures...), one was an appearance on This Morning where she explained to a flabbergasted and increasingly exasperated Phil Schofield that she used all her dole money and benefits (a considerable amount due to having 3-4 kids) and spent Ā£700 on different haircuts for herself at Xmas because she believed that if she didn't feel good in her appearance then it set a bad example for her kids but she was quite indignant about her use of the money versus the actual purpose of benefits. Her later appearance on This Morning had her with Eamon Holmes (I doubt Phil would have had her back without punching something š) had her talking about a mangy teddy she sleeps with that aparrently stunk but she'd refuse to not have it in bed, even when she brought men home. I don't know how much any of her stories were true, she just wanted to be famous and I guess thank God that she only elevated herself to the Daily Mail readership. I don't think I could take that sort of banality in every day news, it's just a curious thing to happen to someone from my past!
This is my hand drawing about COVID19.
That nerdy guy on the right was my alter ego with my Mighty Medicine team (Captain Aseptico, Capsulo and Tableto)
The villain on the left was Queen Covidia, Empress of Pneumonia
@RogerRoger As far as Dreams, I only made it so far as to āstick my head in the doorā sort of thing. I did muck around with the tools through the beginning tutorials for a while, but thatās about it so far. The first stage of creation is the basic act of learning to make some objects to decorate your home space and that simple task proved to be difficult enough that I couldnāt even fathom trying to create a game yet. But I can see how practice would help, because part of the challenge is just getting the controls down to manipulate 3D objects in space. The game does as good a job as can be expected but itās still a lot to wrap your head around. So in the case if Dreams it requires both artistic talent and technical skill, which I guess is true of most computer based art. Iāve not completely given up on a potential masterpiece game creation living dormant inside me, but itās a stretch for sure.
@ralphdibny Wow, thatās a crazy story! Canāt say Iāve ever had a teacher like that!
@Anti-Matter Very creative work there! I love that š
Being the resident teacher on the Ol' PushSquare forums I feel rather ashamed hearing the "horror" stories from @RogerRoger & @ralphdibny of terrible teachers.
In particular that's really saddening Rog hearing about your interest in art vanishing to such a pompus, pretencious a$$... That really grinds my gears š”
As for Art and me.. I'm not good at it in the slightest. I'd either spend my break/lunch tracing something good on a board or get my teaching assistant to do it as I can barely draw better then the kids I teach š
Nice stuff @Anti-Matter with the comic... My favourite of the art you've posted
@ralphdibny Blimey... considering what happened to your teacher, I reckon I got off lightly! Cheers all the same, though. It really does make all the difference to a subject, having the right teacher (which is why I'm certain that, if @Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy had ever taught me anything, I'd have loved it!) and I luckily did have some enthusiastic, supportive and challenging teachers for history and English Literature, the latter being the reason why nowadays I can write right good.

@LieutenantFatman To arrive at that end result, it doesn't matter how many corrections you've got to make, I reckon! Back at university, I used to know some Warhammer collectors, and let's just say that they'd be very jealous of your skills!
Alas, our school went through a phase of hiring anybody. My RE teacher was an angry drunk.

@Th3solution It's encouraging to hear that you haven't lost all hope of realising your Dreams dreams, and if there's anything that'll get me over my "technology-assisted artwork" phobia, it'll be a DualShock. It must be pretty daunting, though, especially when you see what others have created. I can definitely see how Noisy lost himself to the game for months on end; at least you've got it there now, for when inspiration and motivation converge with enough free time.
@Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy ah no worries, at least for me. She had no real effect on me apart from offering amusing anecdotes for me to share. At the end of the day, like any profession, teachers are just people. Which means that you will get all sorts of people doing it, d***heads, supportive people, people with a good sense of humour, stoic examples of good society etc. With that, you also get to see all those people on good days and bad days so it varies a lot. No doubt it's confusing when your a kid and these people are basically the law, but especially in my teenage years I came to appreciate them as actual people and not just someone who tells me what to do for 50 minutes a day. Going to sixth form at the same secondary school helped too because everything became a bit more of a laugh and everyone got to know eachother better and we'd go for drinks with the teachers sometimes once we turned 18. Some teachers were only 6 years different in age to us at that point. It does make me question people who make these sweeping statements like "police are bad" because like teachers, police are just people, you get good ones and you get bad ones.
@Th3solution that's not even the craziest story from my school years. I look back on them so fondly even though they were an epic struggle when I was that age. I've always thought that if I could time travel back and keep the knowledge I had now, I'd go back to being a kid and just make more of the time I had back then instead of just constantly wanting to be an adult. Being an adult sucks so hard!
@RogerRoger ah no not at all! As I said to @Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy , it didn't affect me that much so all good really. I had much more trying times in school in other areas but overall it really was the best time of my life and I'd give anything to go back to being young again!
@Zuljaras oh yeah I wanted to say your game and other art/sculptures are awesome!
@Anti-Matter your covid sketch is actually pretty cool!
@ralphdibny Well said. I have had similar thoughts. You donāt know how great it is to be a kid while you have it. Iāve remained a kid in my head, but stupid society expects me to act like an adult and be all responsible and stuff. I regret having those expectations.
āWe cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.ā
@Anti-Matter Nice job on the Chibis. I also like that style. Well it amuses me anyway. Here's one my daughter drew up for me real quick some time ago...
