As part of the developer documentary covering how The Last of Us: Part II came to be, Neil Druckmann reveals he now has a "concept" for a third instalment in the series. It sounds like a third game is very far away, but now Druckmann has that concept after "years" of searching for it, he says there's "probably one more chapter to the story".
Druckmann reveals he's been unable to find a concept for a third entry for years, "but recently that's changed". He says he doesn't have a story yet, but the concept he's come up with is "as exciting as [The Last of Us] one, as exciting as [The Last of Us] two. It's its own thing and yet has this throughline for all three. So it does feel like there's probably one more chapter to the story."
Given the fact all Druckmann has at the moment is a concept, that essentially confirms Naughty Dog's next single player game — of which it has "more than one" now in the works — won't be The Last of Us 3. It's far too early in the production cycle to be one of the "ambitious" projects the developer was referring to in its statement that confirmed The Last of Us Multiplayer had been cancelled. Though, we don't know when this footage was filmed, so it's possible the project might have progressed since then.

Sorry to pull you away from your Friday night takeaway for this one @LiamCroft 😂
Fantastic news, see you on Day One in 2030 when it’s released
I guess killing off one of the best characters in a game period made it very difficult to come up with ideas…
@itsfoz I'll let you off, but I wish it was a takeaway. All I had was a big packet of crisps after my dinner
The fact it's not even in development yet is good news for me as it means there's more of a chance of the current two games being developed at ND being either a Jak of Daxter game or a brand new IP, both of which I would be happy about.
Probably? This is like saying the sun will probably shine at some point in the summer...
In other shocking news, PlayStation is blowing XBox out of the water.
He said earlier in the documentary that he believes marketing is a big part of the game making process, and then drops a little hint at the end.
I'd be hugely surprised if part 3 isn't already in development.
Maybe they’re making a prequel to TLOU Part I with Joel and Tommy. I’ve always wanted to know what Joel and Tommy had to do in order to survive and make it all the way to Boston.
Doesn't need a 3rd. Didn't need a 2nd. But PlayStation like money and this franchise is bank.
Bold prediction: GT8 will feature cars.
They're too busy making The Last of Us Remastered Remake.
I hope their next game is not too far off tbh. It's been almost 4 years since TLOU2 so I'd expect to at least see a tease or something this year.
@Korra
I sort of agree with you, but who are we to say to the creators their story is done when they have more story to tell?
So there is actually hope for a JAK 4.....but to be honest I don't trust the current Naughty Dog to honor Jak at all. Jak will probably be replaced by a female protagonist or killed straight away like Joel.....
The truth is, ND killed the IP! Yeah, yeah, I know Part 2 sold 10 million units blah blah ....... still worse than Part 1 with 30 million units sold. a Part 3 would sell even worse.
yeah and please don't tell me about the HBO series. As soon as Joel dies here, most of the new fan base will also leave. No matter how you twist it, ND killed Sony's biggest money maker.
There's a reason why Sony Santa Monica isn't replacing Kratos. simply because it would kill the entire God of War IP.
Nevertheless, I'm excited to see what comes next.
If they can pull their finger out and stop cranking out remakes and remasters, I'd go for one more round of fungal fun with Ellie and her merry band of mischief makers.
@NimrodNation20 I was about to say the same. A prequel from the death of joels daughter, his survival in the aftermath of the outbreak, separation from his brother and the events that lead upto joel working with tess
Prequel makes a lot of sense, I would dare say that it would be the best in the series
I'm hoping their next game is a new ip and I could see tlou part 3 releasing in 2026/7 with season 4 of the show.
@TheCollector316 yep, but they should put the Ellie line to rest and come up with a new one. Maybe not so popular opinion but I liked the 2. However, it would be wise to concentrate more on the world itself on a third entry. They should not go "all-out drama". A storyline where they trying to find a cure or the source of this plague would be nice in my opinion.
This drama only concept killed the walking dead series to me.
@OtsutsukiBoruto They said waaay back that ND doesn't care to make games like Jak and Daxter anymore, just adult themed games like Uncharted and Tlou so don't expect that.
Man we are just gonna get remasters and remakes before we get a new IP from ND
@HotGoomba Jokes aside, they already did that...
I'm happy the next game won't be Part 3. I'm just tired of the series now so I want to see something new. The remake and the remasters played a part in making me tired of it.
While I did enjoy Part 2, it left me feeling it didn't need to be made, it's not the same without Joel and I just want something new now so I'm not interested in a Part 3 anymore. Maybe trailers will win me over but I'd rather see something fresh and new.

@123abcxyz 🙄
"Though, we don't know when this footage was filmed, so it's possible the project might have progressed since then."
April 2023
There were timelines before each segment in the documentary.
@Bionic-Spencer I had an alternate pitch for breaking bad where walter white dies after a couple of seasons and we follow the rest of the show from the viewpoint of his killer. Never understood why it didn't take off.
@MrGilly69 only problem with that is that Joel spent those years murdering innocent people. Part I was him learning not to be that person (for the most part).
Everyone saying prequel is spot on imo. There's like 15 or 20 years (can't remember exact) from the opening scene to where we pick up. I'm sure there is a quality, savage story to be told there. But knowing *****spoilers****** Joel doesn't make it could make it less impactful
@TheCollector316 Absolutely, I agree and I have respect for the vision of the creators. It's just that in this instance both games had a sense of finality as if they weren't expecting to make more.
If they aren't working on anything Jak and Daxter then I hope atleast they give Bluepoint the series to remake, breathe some new life into the games and hopefully get enough sales to greenlight number 4. After all Bluepoint did say one of their next games is a Remake of a "beloved" game.
PS6
Last of us part 1 remastered mastered version
Last of us part 2 remastered remake version
Bothered featuring 3 minutes of unused levels and a new load screen
100 quid each
@DeepEyes No no no, not The Last of Us Remake. The Last of Us Remastered Remake.
I knew this when I rolled credits on part 2 in summer 2020
I wish they would make something fun again, like they did, during the ps1-ps3 era.
TLoU is just too damn depressing and boring.
They should start making some AA games, in between the AAA games.
@HotGoomba I know that you are trying to be funny, but if they made a remake was from the latest version, so the PS4 remaster one...
@Steel76 no. interactive third person movies only
@OtsutsukiBoruto the only way you'll see another jax and daxter is some one else makes it , 100% naughty dog isn't going back to them.
@Nyne11Tyme a game that takes place in the past and future imo , so both a sequel and prequel. kind of like what last of us 2 did jumping around.
I would describe myself as a story-driven gamer, and like any of that mold characters are part of what fascinates me.
Part III in that respect might not be for me, but I'll have an eye on it for sure. If a factionesque mode is released together with the game it would help seal the deal.
I am much more interested to hear what they're actually working on. After Ryan's departure they could decide for themselves not to run a GAAS-game, but what then?
So, if Neil has seemingly confirmed that Naughty Dog is not currently working on The Last of Us Part III (as we all assumed they were), and they've confirmed they are working on multiple single player games, then what could they be? I believe they've confirmed there is a new IP in the works that Neil Druckmann is not a part of. So, if the other one (or ones) is not TLOU3, then odds are Naughty Dog are working on a new Jak game or Uncharted 5. I honestly would not be surprised to learn that they are remaking Uncharted 1.
Does this basically confirm that the next Naughty Dog game will be the original IP. That would be awesome, it’s been over 10 years since they did something new
I wouldn't mind a new game by the middle of the PS6 era at the earliest, I love the two games as much as the next person but I want to see the creative juices flowing in ND once again with something else.
@Nyne11Tyme I don't understand why people would want a prequel to tlou of all things, no matter what happens in the prequel we know that Joel's skull is ultimately still going to be caved in into a million pieces on the floor so what's the point?
I'm 100% down with them finishing the story. A motivated Naughty Dog with something to prove sounds like a banger in the making.
I still don't and will never understand why TLOU part 2 gets the hate it does. Unequivocally one of the greatest games of all time and by rights Joel actually got what he deserved. If he can be morally right for what he did then by the same logic so can Abby.
I really want a sequel. I'd love to see Ellie's story come full circle. See if she can find some sort of peace after being confronted with the consequences of her actions. There's still plenty of meat on the bone, ND get your skates on.
@theSpectre
They have said definitively that that will not be going back to Uncharted or Jak.
Let's hope not.
@atthegates
That’s Literally the plot of Game of Thrones. It was the biggest show on tv for like half a decade. Maybe you missed it?
So what exactly is ND actually working on right now aside from greenlighting remasterakes and a TV show?
@CP2 There are a lot of things happening now that we thought we'd never see. Sony is releasing their major first party games on PC. Xbox is seemingly porting Hi-Fi Rush to PS5 and Switch. Until I see definitive proof that it is not the case, I firmly believe Kojima's "new" IP is actually going to be Metal Gear Solid 6. I'm not saying it is true, but with Druckmann confirming that they aren't currently working on TLOU3, then what are the "multiple" sp games that ND has in development? Are the making multiple new IPs? If not, then likely they are working on Uncharted or Jak and Daxter. Or maybe we will be getting that TLOU Tommy spin-off game.
@ChrisDeku Haha think you might of missed it as that is exactly my point. What works for tv, doesn't always work for video games. I expect the second season of the last of us show to be great unlike the second game because as a show a lot of the story will work.
When i saw abby's skill tree near the start of the game and realised what was going on my heart sank. You cannot remove iconic characters and then PLAY as the person who removed them. That's a near impossible thing to pull off and naughty dog didn't in my opinion. The gameplay of tlou2 is absolutely stellar. Nothing has come close in the years that followed. Unfortunately for me the story just does not work in the medium of games. I'm aware there are many who disagree with me

@TheGreyandTheRed LMAO, I don't know either, but a lot of people seem to hate it with a passion I've not seen before. I don't know why people are so bothered by it. It's a fictional character, yet they're all acting as if Neil Druckmann entered their home and killed of their entire family.
I think another Joel and Ellie story would've been boring, it would've been just more of the same. And for a character that died within the first chapter, there was an awful lot of Joel in the game still, so I don't understand why people are that mad.
I think Part 2 was one of the best games in a good while. Gameplay-wise it trumps every story-driven game that's out there. It's way better than 1 in that regard. And the amount of content that they managed to cram in a single game is bonkers, for a narrative-driven game at least. I took me like 40 hours to finish the whole thing, more than double the length of the first one, yet equally as thrilling.

@Yusuo yeah it’s just the start of the marketing I would also be very surprised if it wasn’t already being made , but still amazing news .
They love being cryptic a new naughty dog would be great news
@KundaliniRising333 no one but naughty dog knows this
We will probably get another uncharted game sometime in the future lol. Are you serious or was this a joke?
