Over the weekend, a game reductively described as "multiplayer Pokemon with guns" was released, shattering sales records and concurrent player numbers in a shocking upset. Palworld, as it's called, has become a bonafide phenomenon and one of the most popular games on the planet, all without the help of PlayStation players.
But that may be about to change if Shuhei has his way. Palworld is currently in early access on Xbox One, Series X|S and PC. It's not an exclusive, and Tokyo-based developer Pocketpair's stated stance on PS5 as a platform is that it would "consider it during development." Sony has undoubtedly taken note of the title's meteoric success, proof of which was spotted by PlayStation LifeStyle, with indie boss Shuhei Yoshida giving the game the digital nod.
Yoshida congratulated the developer on the astounding launch, responding to a Tweet posted by Pocketpair. A fan then requested that he work on bringing the game to PS5 in the future. Yoshida responded with a simple "yes" before tagging Jingwen Zhu, PlayStation's partner development executive for China and Japan.
Since its launch on Friday, 19th January, Palworld has sold five million copies at an astonishing rate of around 86,000 an hour. It broke the all-time concurrent player counts of heavy hitters like Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, and Baldur's Gate 3, with 1.29 million players simultaneously. Its gameplay concepts appear to have struck a chord, but it might not live long enough to make it to PlayStation anyway; allegations of AI-powered plagiarism are already in the air, and the lethally-litigious Nintendo has yet to respond.
What do you think of Palworld possibly coming to PS5 someday? Does it look like something you would be interested in? Let us know in the comments section below.

i think all of nintendos IPs should be challenged and have some competition, this is a really good thing happening & i hope it doesn’t die . Imagine a time where we won’t need nintendos awful hardware and awful online to enjoy games similar to theirs anymore
I hope he succeeds. But I hope it's on PS Plus
We already have Sujimon and the Beastmaster job down the road, so no thanks!!!
It's a amazing game very very addictive and I'm not a Pokémon fan at all
The game is real fun been enjoying it at a friend's for awhile now needed to take a break 😉
Can't wait to see a real Zelda rival on the PS5.
I would definitely play it if it came over along with any other games that are inspired or are copying Nintendo's IPs! give me clones of Smash, Mario Kart and Mario Party too 🙂
The evidence of the generative Ai theft is pretty damning. Some models with near identical mathematical proportions to Pokémon assets.
The sales for this are impressive for sure for such a cheese ball game, but then again there is fortnite, Pokémon itself, cod, genshin, and much more that is just as lame and hugely popular with many. So it clearly appeals to some.
Hope they lose all steam and this game gets crushed if they really used AI to create the assets based on assets of other ips. It sets another disturbing precedent for the future of media with AI being used so recklessly.
What's most stupid though is ripping off that garbage anyways. It sounds like they have a fun game loop to some and they really didn't need to do what they did. It's ultimately just more a sign of laziness and the greed driven design shortcuts that AI allows. We are in a world now where you can AI generate environments, characters, models, other assets, and now even voice acting. It's lame and will result in games that are charging you full price for games that ultimately take a fraction of paid employee power to generate. F AI.
@nomither6 this is awfully close to the ideology MS has/had behind the idea of hostile takeover over Nintendo so ... if it's just competition and not "Nintendo on pc" then that's cool.
What is funny is that this game is japanese I thought it was korean all this time. They sure didn't give a f*ck about AI stealing Pokemon or Ghibli LOL.
I don't know if this has mt but if it doesn't I don't think MS will care if it's exclusive or not, the sales are already in, the early access will lose hype with time.
Just imagine the amount of bad press Nintendo would generate for taking down Palworld. Even they wouldn't survive the backlash. I guess they'll just need to make a really good Pokemon again.
I’ve never played any of the mainline Pokemon games, just some free spinoff stuff, but if the word Palworld wasn’t on that vid at the top I’d probably think it was a Pokemon game. I showed it to my wife, who has never played any Pokemon game and who is older than all of you, and she said Piplup, Arceus and Ponya. 😂
So what does this game cost that it has 5 million sales, looks free to play to me. It’s not $60 is it? 🤷🏻♂️
Edit: Ok I checked Steam and it’s $30, which probably helps the sales. Cheap enough for people who don’t want to spend $60 but it’s not free for people who won’t touch free to start games. I read the description and it seems nothing like Pokemon though. A little like Monster Hunter stories, but they are obvious Pokemon characters in the game. They just are.
@rjejr
Free on Gamepass, which is how I'm playing it. This is one of those "Don't judge a book by it's cover" situations.
@ATaco I didn't think I would like it ,I just gave it a go to see what it's like on Friday ......12 hours later still I was still playing it and didn't go to bed because of it it's gaming crack
@nomither6 You can't challenge Pokemon nothing can and this game isn't challenging PM its straight up stealing designs from it. Its a fun game but i wouldn't be shocked if a lawsuit happens.
The Nintendo ninjas are coming!
This looks more like a fad than anything else, but who knows, it might have the staying power of these other popular f2p games.
The only positive coming from this is that Nintendo will have to add more than just marginal gains in their upcoming Pokémon games to keep up.
I hear a lot of people no liking game.
This will get Nintendo to make a new Pokémon game. I was an adult by the time the firstgame came out wasn't for me. If you enjoy all the power to ya some palworld designs are funny as hell this filled with adult humour nothing like Pokémon. What having a zombie in a game is ripping off resi evil 🤣🤦
@KundaliniRising333 Funny considering the only reason it's not on Playstation is because they don't allow early access releases at all.
Where are you getting that from, there's been quite a few early access releases on playstation, infact they heavily promoted one last year called Wayfinder. The devs for this game didn't plan to put it on consoles but the reason Palworld is on Xbox is because Microsoft approached them with money to publish the games for their console.
Pokémon isn't being challenged here, it's being ripped off by use of AI stealing some designs. Also the game is heavily about crafting and survival mechanics so the core Pokémon fanbase won't be interested as Pokémon is popular for its simplicity and accessibility to all ages. There is no challenge here and Nintendo won't feel pressured to change because of this game.
@UltimateOtaku91 Exactly. Yes, it's straight up ripping off Pokemon for its designs (and not as in a nod to, no, it's straight up copying and combining existing Pokemon). But the gameplay is nothing like it. So when people say it's a good Pokemon contender they're completely missing the point.
I'd really love a true Pokemon competitor, because Pokemon has been garbage for quite a while now. The indie copies like Temtem don't come close I think, even though I don't think it's difficult to make a better Pokemon game. Yokai Watch had some potential, but they killed in outside of Japan before it had a chance to take off.
@Octane Yeah there's been a few that have put in decent efforts, For me Yo Kai Watch, Ni No Kuni 1, Dragon Quest Monsters, World of Final Fantasy, SMT and Monster Hunter Stories have all put in decent efforts and all have some decent sales but Pokémon as a brand is just too big to be challenged properly at all.
They earned so much money in a few days already.. they can now hire more people just for designing Pals. Make them more original, and in the meantime improve the design. The game is early acces, so fans probably won’t care enough yet to make that a problem. Nintendo or Gamefreak did not had an official respons yet, so there is still time. Nintendo or Gamefreak will need to respond though.. because the whole gaming industry wants them to.
Yeah... i doubt Nintendo will let this one slide. It's obvious it's ripping off pokemon.
@UltimateOtaku91 don't forget Dreams was early access too
Nintendo doesn't really have a leg to stand on when it comes to game mechanics, because it's not really a Pokémon style game. Although if I were the developers of Ark, I'd be pissed if I were releasing a game this year, because the mechanics are closer to that style of game. All Nintendo can do is sue over character, creature or world designs.
@KundaliniRising333 here comes Mr. Fun Pants!
@Octane ni no Kuni (1) was superb. It really showed how Pokemon would have evolved if Pokemon fans wouldn't buy anything regardless of quality.
I'm either missing something or I'm getting old ,but I thought it was absolute crap ,but hey,if the kiddies like it.
@ATaco I tried it, and I found the book to be far worse than its cover ,its awful ,broken,my character looks deformed ,the invert y axis doesn't work ,crap animation ,I dont see anything good about it,whats wrong with people.
If they did use AI to design their "Pals" then it's very short sighted. AI generated assets don't attract copyright (at least in the US, I don't think it's been tested in the UK courts yet). So presumably their designs could just be copied and used commercially with abandon.
It's an great game. Put alot of hours into on Xbox so far both solo and 3 of us Co op. Crafting and survival is forgiving but excellent. Not had any major issues or bugs, servers have been fine and just fun all round.
Very much so doubt Nintendo can or will do anything
@KundaliniRising333 that's a pretty poor take tbh. It's a fun game with great reviews and it works well. Just because you haven't played it and have decided that it's trash is just......
As for AI 🤷🤷 that's how it is. Lots of people use it in and for work now, it's used in a substantial amount of things in life and will continue to be used more and more in games and that's also fine.
Pal world looks interesting.and im never been a fan of Pokemon.word up son
@DennisReynolds with a little bit of Studio Ghibli thrown in for good measure.
@Stickleman don't try to reason with them, all they do is moan and groan.
Is it actually popular, or is it a bunch of people getting swept up by "pokemon with guns" hype who will be bored of it in a month?
@Mephisto2869 kiddies ? Ur sooooo wrong haven't been classed as a kid since before the sega days
6 millions now.
@Martsmall there's far far better games to play, I dont understand why people would want to waste it on this crap, and yeah the majority of players will be children,I presume it's all over youtube and twitch ,played by those people who refuse to get a proper job ,its the new prime.
@Mephisto2869 that would depend on a person's taste wouldnt it ? Or is it a case if u don't like it everyone that's does is wrong ?
@Martsmall like I said ,the kids like it ,doesnt mean I can't criticise it...I mean they adore roblox and thats a broken mess as well, maybe youre not a child it's just that you like the same thing kids do ,some grown men with beards and everything, like collecting barbies ,and thats ok.
I think I would play this game if it didn't take hours of punching trees before I got a gun to shoot my legally distinct, in no way pokemon creatures.
@BeerIsAwesome
You can't rip-off character/pokemon designs without any repercussions and you can get any trademark on AI generated stuff.
I have never seen this game before, I haven't played Pokémon in a decade, but these are just Pokémon. Not Pokémon inspired, straight off Pokémon.
I can name specific names and I'm far away from a Pokémon super fan
@Mephisto2869
I get that you don't like the game and that's fine, what I don't get is why you need to be incredibly condescending and insulting about it. Are you angry that it's not Pokemon and people are enjoying it anyway?
@Octane If you have a Switch and haven't played them already i highly recommend Cassette Beasts (also on Xbox) and Monster Hunter Stories 2 for Pokemon style games.
@ATaco in what way was I insulting ? You mean the fact that grown adults like a game that the majority of children play ,you could say the same about fortnite ,if you wanna play online with 10 year olds that's fine ,as long as they behave and understand that they are the adults,In my opinion the game is garbage, in others its the best thing since sliced bread, both are valid,I said its ok to like it whats your problem ,if you don't like criticism of something you like ,maybe stay off the Internet.
I need it on Playstation 5 badly!
@Mephisto2869
What I again don't get is why you even gave the game a try when you clearly only like "adult" games? You clearly weren't going to like it right off the bat. Seems like you just wasted your time.
@ATaco I wanted to see what all the fuss was about and offer my own opinion, im not one for criticising something and not experiencing it myself ,and besides it's on gamepass so why not,I played it ,my opinion is ,its garbage ,im kinda hoping nintendo shuts it down ,that'll will give me a right old chuckle 😁 some people are of the opinion that no video games are for adults ,and thats fine ,I dont have any issues with games that are made for ,and played by mainly children,I do have a problem with crappy games ,promoted by purple haired nobs on YouTube,I also think grown adults who play with kids online is a little weird ,but again ,just my opinion.
Can't help but suspect a lot of bot like postings/ promoting of it on the likes of Twitter,(which in itself feels like it's been infested like a Zerg invasion by spambots),have had a hand in hyping this as the next big thing.
Given its online only play model,it seems a stretch Nintendo could kill it in the courts, but no doubts they'll be reviewing any similar looking monsters as a starting point.
Yes,in theory Nintendo could choose to go big & do a PC/Mobile/Switch open world online Pokemon game...but they've run a successful "walled garden",for decades around buying Nintendo hardware to play Pokemon.,& can't see them changing that approach.
Never grabbed me as a game but obviously well backed by the cartoon Pokemon, trading cards & merch which this early access game doesn't have.
Vague memories of the likes of would be rivals Digimon & Yokai Watch...did either survive?
@Mephisto2869
Fair enough, seems like there's lots of other underlying reasons for your opinion but I appreciate you clarifying it for me so I can better understand where said opinion came from.
@ATaco oh I could write a multi paragraph comment ,on why this game is god awful for the video game industry ,but I won't, because nobody will read it ,now that would be a waste of my time ,im just a grumpy old man that wishes it was the 80s again 😂anyway I appreciate your polite response, kind of 😂
Despite the plagiarism, of which it’s obvious and foolish to think they chose this in development. Throwing a ball like device to capture, seriously they couldn’t come up with a different method? Guns are part of the game, why not tie it all together?
This game while interesting and cute, is just asking for legal trouble. Too similar to Pokemon.
@Ravix pretty much how I think it'll play out. It's big ATM but as soon as the next big thing comes out it'll be dropped. Player base will shrink, and continue to shrink unless they continue to add things to the game. Look at TemTem, it was everywhere for a lil bit then just dropped off the radar for most.
At some point we will need LAD: Sujimon, but I agree that Nintendo's IPs need to be challenged. Pokémon and Animal Crossing in particular have seen releases with a fraction of the effort and content they could have had.
I would wait for Palworld to survive the PC release first. It's by no means in the clear, it's just an early acess game and a promise.
@Bunchesopuppies because apparently you don't get guns until later. The first bits of the game are punch trees and rocks for materials.
I would think Nintendo has already looked into this. It seems pretty late for them to take action if they have a case. But I'm just guessing.
@Mephisto2869 "I'm either missing something or I'm getting old ,but I thought it was absolute crap ,but hey,if the kiddies like it."
So what you're saying is you don't play any Nintendo games as most of the audience is kids? GTA Online is also filled with children so not that, honestly most online games are filled with kids so I assume you don't play any.
Can you share your manly man list of appropriate games for adults to play? Is The Day Before and The Walking Dead: Destinies part of the list?
@naruball Ni No Kuni isn't like Pokemon at all though. It's a classic JRPG with some monster collecting as a side thing. You still play as yourself in battles, and the focus isn't all so much on the familiars. The level up system and battle dynamics doesn't come close to Pokemon which is a monster battling game at its core.
The battle gameplay is really good, even in Scarlet and Violet, it's just everything else that sucks. Other games have better stories and look way better, yes, but none come close to the intricate battle system Pokemon has developed. I'd like to see both, but that doesn't exist unfortunately.
Playing it on pc at the moment, pretty fun game and very cute.
I do hope they fill in the world more with events.
@nomither6 as someone who grew up with Nintendo and loves their IPs, I completely agree. Nintendos inability to adapt to the times, outdated approach to specifications and incompetent online are its greatest enemies. Not competition, but ignoring its own carriage stuck in the mud. I’m hoping they don’t continue this way with the next system, because their own first party titles have been proven to struggle with the hardware and infrastructure they’re rocking.
@ATaco " free " on Gamepass should be counted as a rental, not a sale. I mean we even have a word that covers subscription services, rental, so they shouldn't be including those in the "sold" category. 🤑
I'm not judging the game, no idea what's going on, but from the trailer it doesn't look anything like a Pokémon game. Does remind me a bit of Pokepark but there were only 2 of those back on the Wii, never ported, so I doubt anyone remembers those. The creatures though, those are straight up Pokemon. I'd sue if I owned the creature IP. Game might do fine without them looking like Pokemon, Digimon is a thing, as was Yokai Watch, and I'm sure others, but these are just Pokemon. Maybe Pokemon clones if one is feeling generous.
If the game was free on PS5 I'd probably try it out.🤷♂️
@Tecinthebrain no I don't play nintendo games as a rule, my kids do though and I do dabble in Mario party with them ,and yes I do not play any online games, I do play a lot of fighting games with a few mates and alcohol, but that's as far as my MP goes ,does that answer your question, why would I play those games they're worse than super pals ,palworld ,we are the pals, or whatever its called ,you like playing online with little kids ,thats ok ,no need to get uppity, not once have I stated that some games are more manly than others, thats a ridiculous notion,it's just that this game and others are aimed at 7 to 12 year olds,as they are the ones more easily influenced ,by the shouty shouty ,over excited, guys and gals with the purple hair and nose rings.
This game is amazing. This game would do very well on Playstation. I would love to see innovation like this to light a fire under Game Freak. Pokemon has been stale for far too long. My own kids (who's only pokemon game has been Scarlet / Violet) have said that palworld is way better and that they probably won't be playing pokemon anymore.
Pokemon has been utter trite for nearly a decade now. The IP definitely needs serious competition, if such a thing even exists.
But this... is just not how to do it. This game is obviously made with generative AI doing most of the character designs. Too many monsters rocket way past the sense of being inspired by Pokemon to being downright ripoffs. From the proportions, eye shapes, fur, and details, the plagiarism is obvious. This game is disgraceful, full stop.
I prefer playing survival games (like valheim) in the pc since playing the building part is easier with a mouse. I do hope the game come out for ps5 😃
@greengecko007 Nintendo isn't the first company to make monster collection games, and if the "pal" in the game too similar to pokemon design, Pocketpair can change the monster design in the 1.0 release of the game.
In the end, the market just want an innovative pokemon games, and if Game Freak can't make it, somebody will.
@wiiware Take the monster catching genre out of the equation. The relevant point is Pal World directly ripping off Pokémon character designs. Actually, it’s now being found they used ripped models from Pokémon. It’s straight up copyright infringement. Even if they change the designs “later” they are currently profiting by using illegal assets.
@greengecko007 The latest news from twitter is the one saying palworld using ripped models is lying, using trick to make it like so, and the person already apoligizing. Also I'm sure pokemon company will already sue palworld dev if it's true.
