Team Ninja's upcoming open world epic, Rise of the Ronin, got a blowout at Sony's latest State of Play showcase, with a gameplay overview trailer giving us our best look yet at the game in action. We see its impressive depiction of 19th-century Yokohama, one of the first Japanese ports opened to trade with foreign countries. The swordplay and traversal look as fast and fluid as ever, and we even get a look at the more modern weapons introduced in this era. We're looking forward to this one, launching on 22nd March on PS5.

This looks fantastic. Really unfortunate that it's coming out the same day as Dragon's Dogma 2. Still didn't stop me from pre-ordering though.
Best game of the show for me and one of my most hyped games for the whole year. Ninja Gaiden, Nioh, Wo Long are all awesome.
Looks to be far removed from the stink fest that has been WoLong. Hopefully they make the game challenging like Nioh games are.
Honestly, I was hoping for a little more depth from the showing but still, the game looks great. Can’t wait!
Overall, I’m excited for this game, it really seems to wear its influences on its sleeve. People were mostly saying it was going to be GoT, but the ronin exploring Yokohama, including his animations instantly made me think Like a Dragon.
That being said, I find the visuals to be a little rough but the combat looks fun and even looks a little Ninja Gaiden-ish in some ways, not too over the top but taking it more airborne with attacks.
Was also kind of stunned there was no beta announced. Team Ninja has done them a lot lately and they usually implement the feedback, making their games all the better.
Rise of the ronin looks like 👻 ghost of tsushima and thats a good thing.the gameplay looks excellent.word up son
Looks like a grand ol time!
Now I just need to decide if I'm playing this or DD2 first!?
@CharlieChooChoo I don't see any influence from Like a Dragon. The gameplay clearly takes inspiration from Nioh with the stance switching. Comparisons to GOT or Like a Dragon Ishin are a bit silly. They share the same settings, that's it. They're not even the first to have a ronin period setting. Way of the Samurai 4 did that years ago too long before Ishin or GOT.
Visuals look fine to me and the aesthetics look far more interesting and colourful than its rival Dragon's Dogma 2.
Looked generic to me honestly.
@BusyOlf I don't know why people thought it would be like either Wo Long or the Nioh games. It doesn’t look like a Soulslike either and never was advertised as one either.
@Shad361 Nah you're tripping.
This looked like a poor man's Ghost of Tsushima.

@TruestoryYep compared to even their previous franchise ninja gaiden? This looks run of the mill. Most people would choose another one of those over this.
Surprised no one has mentioned Sekiro. I can't be the only one who saw the obvious similarities in the combat? It even sounds like it!
I mean this as a positive by the way, still my favourite Souls-like combat, together with the Nioh games. So this is the perfect combination.
Big Tsushima 2 vibes. Like where I envisaged it might go! Buzzin for this now I like it
Looks utterly fantastic. Little bit of Nioh, little bit of Wo Long, little bit of Sekiro, and finally a seamless map to explore. Sold!
I hope they will have a demo for this. Wo Long really didn't do it for me
@Mintie DD. Always DD 😌
@Ken_Kaniff Especially visually - it’s a big step back from ghost and for a ps5 game, several years in, I struggle to get over finding that disappointing.
Eh, still on the fence on this one.
This particular trailer seemed kind of janky to me and while I know the developers focus is fluid action and framerate, it looks like the developer is playing it a little too safe in the visuals department.
Wonder if a 120Hz Mode is on the cards here as well.
We need to see more, I’m not convinced it’s a day one purchase especially with dragons dogma 2 releasing of the same day
@Totheteeth Agreed, it really shows the difference in the talent of the studios.
Yes, this looks very cool.
Looks great although I’ll probably wait a bit to get it as I can’t keep up with so many great games.
@BusyOlf
Is Wo Long not like the Nioh games?
Team Ninja makes a lot of great games. I like their partnership with PlayStation. Maybe it'll blossom into something more.
@CharlieChooChoo Why would there be a Beta announced? They are insanely rare for games like this, or rather they never happen and sometime early access for a SP game on PC happens.
@Jaz007 because they’ve done betas for their last 3 releases and are great at implementing the feedback.
So no, not rare for Team Ninja.
@TruestoryYep the switch stancing is more in line with GoT than Nioh, with stances being moreso dependant on enemy type as opposed to fast and weak, balanced, and slow and strong.
The ronin running animation looks straight up like it’s from LaD: Ishin and how Sakamoto runs round, even takes places during same period, and the ronin was exploring Yokohama, a popular LaD setting.
RotR and GoT have entirely different settings, taking place roughly 600 years and in entirely different parts of Japan.
Why the hate for Dragon’s Dogma 2? Never played the first one but 2 looks absolutely gorgeous and like it’ll be a blast to play.
@TheCollector316 it’s interesting to see them cozy up more with Sony now because during the OG Xbox and 360 days they partnered more with Xbox for exclusives like Ninja Gaiden and DOA.
I know I’m in the minority here, but this looks like a game I’ve played twenty times over already. It looks fun, but doesn’t look like it brings anything new and intriguing to the table, for me. Plus, if it ends up being a Soulslike, which it likely will be, it’ll be a hard pass for me, I’m burnt out on those style games.
@CharlieChooChoo
Indeed. Sony always made more sense and even more so now.
@playstation1995
still no SyphonFilter remake announcement, Sony pull ur finger out and get busy, word up son !!!
I’m seeing the Ghost of Tsushima comparisons and of course Nioh. Also some Assassin’s Creed / Ubisoft open world staples. I like the look of the traversal. Although I loved GoT, I’m not all that enamored with the setting, but hopefully the fact that this takes place in a more modern backdrop and adds firearms that maybe it will feel unique enough. I do hope there is English dubs though. I know purists will say playing in the native language is the best way to experience this style of game, but I prefer dubs, if possible.
@pimpjuice. I know right.i still got ps1 syphon filter on my ps4 pro.we need a new syphon filter.but im happy i still can play the incredible retro classic syphon filter.word up son
@TheCollector316 yeah, I don’t know how likely it would be for Team Ninja to join Sony as a first party, they’d probably have to acquire Koei Tecmo to get it.
This absolutely made my worries about the combat go away. That looks just right, and the graphics are good enough - it looks like a fine PS4 game. Now the question for is whether its too linear or whether it gives the player the freedom to go where they like and choose the order of quests or not, and just how much game there really is in the end. Its absolutely moved from a game I was hopeful for to one that I'll probably eventually buy.
I'm ready for it this game looks lovely and combat seems solid
This game looks really good kind of like a mix of Assisins creed and Ghost of Tsushima.
I will look forward to buying this game when it goes on sale later this year.
@Ken_Kaniff GoT from Aliexpress
@Sergo lmfao 🤣 😂 ☠️☠️☠️
Still looks good but I am going with dragon’s dogma 2. Will grab this around BF.
