Last year's Resident Evil 4 remake now has the honour of being the series' fastest-selling game in history as Capcom confirms it's sold 6.48 million copies as of 31st December 2023. It pretty comfortably beat the previous record set by Resident Evil 2 (the PS5, PS4 remake), which sold 5.8 million units in the same timeframe.
The last reported sales update for Resident Evil 4 put the horror game at 5.4 million units come the end of September 2023, meaning another one million copies have been sold in the three months since then.
In the same span of time Resident Evil 4 has been on the market, the previous record holders included Resident Evil Village at 5.7 million and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard managed 4.8 million. It's clear to see the horror franchise has been on an upward trajectory over the past decade.
Released in March 2023 for PS5 and PS4, we awarded a rare 10/10 rating in our Resident Evil 4 PS5 review, and it took third place in our overall Game of the Year 2023 top 10 list. Did you love the remake too? Let us know in the comments below.

Yes this was (and is) a very good game.
But methinks that's enough remakes for now, we need a new game next in this franchise.
@Shinnok789 I’d like to see them at least remake Code Veronica, I didn’t play it when it first launched and I don’t think I could do tank controls today.
I am also interested in seeing as to where they take the series as Ethan’s story is over.
Loved it and Separate Ways DLC was also brilliant.
I second the Code Veronica remake, it's such a great story and was my first Dreamcast game!
With this kind of news, I'm sure they'll announce the remake of 5 next but I'm curious to see what they'll come up with in RE9.
I hope it also sold a non negligible amount of copies due to its excellent VR mode.
For anyone asking why so many remakes... here's your answer.
WE (as a collective whole) BUY THEM!
Game was great. My goty last year.
This type of remake is well worth the purchase though. Most remakes are lazy! What I’d give to play a full rebuild of oot from Nintendo
The best Remake I have ever played and the gold standard moving forward.
Cool.resident evil 4 remake is a masterpiece.word up son
Fantastic remake! I resisted playing this until I got my PSVR2 - Wow!!!!! Hoping the VR genre continues at this pace. Dead Space is next (fingers crossed)
It's a great game and I've only played a bit in VR but certainly want to play more as its an amazing experience. Out of the modern remakes RE2 is still my favourite as i lean towards the more survival horror aspects of the series but this is up there.
Going forward I'd be way more interested in a Code Veronica remake than RE5
@themightyant unfortunately
This is great news. I'm a fan of remakes because it allows developers to (re)create their vision with modern technology and gamers to enjoy the game, some for the first time.
I need to get this eventually. My 2020’s brain just couldn’t get ahold of 2005 gamplay and control design, so I never was able to complete the original version when I tried a couple years ago.
@Th3solution The controls are greatly improved. I will never play the OG again.
The original first RE remake will always be my fav. So glad they haven't decided to do a remake of a remake for the first RE remake with zero tank controls. That first remake is perfect as is. BRING BACK RE TANK CONTROLS with a little modern twist to it, would be perfection
Well deserved! These remakes have been great. Just wrapped up Separate Ways and thought it was a fantastic addition to an already amazing game.
Well deserved. A phenomenal game.
My only gripe is the cut content from it.
Separate Ways dlc was included in the original game.
@gatson
I got it because of the VR mode. Just like 7 and village. Wouldn’t have gotten it otherwise, but it’s now one of my favourite games of all time.
After Seperate Ways I want a full Ada Wong game. Such a great character, (and the voice actor did a great job IMO).
I'm still waiting for the price to drop
@gaston yup. I can only speak for myself, but I've never played a Resident Evil game in the past and I bought 4 on PSVR2 because I heard it's superb.
@naruball If You haven't You should also give resident evil village a try. I am not a big fan of horror games and only played the resident evil games because of the VR mode.
I really liked village. In some ways the VR adaptation of village is better than Re 4, but other bits are a bit worse. Overall it is also a fantastic experience in VR, maybe even better than Re 4.
@gaston I think I bought it, but never got around playing it. Thanks a lot. I'll definitely give it a try now!
In my opinion, the beginning was not my favorite part, the castle is very, very good, the middle part is a bit less interesting and then again gets very good for the last 2/5th or so.
Kool let's go resi 9 they gotta be making that right 🤔
