Despite fairly close ties to PlayStation platforms, Shin Megami Tensei V from Atlus launched earlier this month as a Nintendo Switch exclusive. It's supposedly an excellent JRPG and considered "the best entry" yet by our friends over at Nintendo Life, so it's no surprise PS5 and PS4 owners are feeling a little left out. They can at least put some hope into a recent datamine of the game, though, which has revealed target platforms of PS4 and PC alongside the Switch.
The datamine in question also revealed features specific to PC, like the ability to alter the resolution, post-processing, and change the shadow and texture quality. A version of Shin Megami Tensei V for the personal computer was also spotted in the GeForce Now leak from earlier this year, lending further credence to the possibility of Atlus porting the game to other platforms down the line. At the time, NVIDIA said the leaked list of games was used simply for "internal tracking and testing". However, since then, a number of the titles listed have indeed come to fruition.
Of course, the Shin Megami Tensei series has always been part of PlayStation history too. While the first two entries were released for the NES, Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne came to PS2 (and was recently remastered for PS4) and almost all of the Persona spin-off franchise can be played on Sony systems, except for the Persona Q entries.
"If you are at all a fan of RPGs or have been looking for a good entry point into this oft overlooked series, we would strongly encourage you to pick this up as soon as you can. Shin Megami Tensei V was worth the wait, Atlus has successfully stuck the landing with this one," is how Nintendo Life concluded in a 9/10 review. Maybe one day we too will be able to play it for ourselves on PS5, PS4.

Hopefully it sticks with being a Switch exclusive for a year or two. After that? Sure. Let Playstation and PC have it as well. Bringing it to those platforms would definitely benefit it with how rough the framerate and the look is on Switch. (it feels like its pushing the Switch to its very limits)
@rawzeku well it is announced for Switch in 2017
I didn't even know this was Switch exclusive. I was gonna stick it on me Christmas list n'all.
I wouldn’t mind SMT V being on PC and PS4 as well PROVIDED that Switch and PC gets Persona 5 as well. I feel that will be more fair imo
Removed - trolling
Doubt its coming to PS but a PC release is 100% happening. It running on UE4 (like Bravely Default 2) is prove enough
Hope this turns out true. I'd much rather play this on anything but Switch.
Ah. I’ll probably wait then as it did look like it was very much pushing the Switch to its limits.
I don't think it'll happen, given Atlus' profound weirdness about porting games. P5 is still exclusive to Playstation consoles. P4G HD is still only on Steam. It's hard to imagine they'd pick SMT V to be the game that flouts their release conventions.
I'd probably triple-dip, if I'm being honest. I'm mostly playing the game docked, and it'd unquestionably benefit from stronger hardware. This feels like a PS4 game that got crammed onto the Switch, considering the high-quality animations, massive environments, etc.
@IonMagi why wouldn’t it come to PlayStation if come to pc smt3 on ps4.
@4kgk2 Nocturne HD wasn't announced as an exclusive. That's the difference.
To date, Atlus exclusives stay exclusive.
@4kgk2 it’s Atlus they are weird like that.
Also originally SMT 3 was announced as a Switch and PS4 only game
@Ralizah dude the switch can barely run this game plus it’s more money to be made on PlayStation and pc.
Not sure whether to believe this or not. For example the Switch was spotted in a data mine of Resident Evil 3 Remake but resident evil 3 remake isn’t even on Switch yet.
Also SMT V on PC was found in the Nvidia leak but that leak also has Bayonetta 3 on there. And Bayonetta 3 is Switch exclusive only. Even Kamiya said it is Switch exclusive.
So yeah don’t know whether to believe this or not. I would say a PC release is more likely than a PS release
@4kgk2 Because usally Nintendo locks other consoles away if they let Games they had Deals with to other Platforms. They published SMT V after all in the West. Bravely Default 2 and that Mecha Game too and they only came to PC afterwards
@4kgk2 First off:
"dude the switch can barely run this game"
Untrue. I've been playing the game religiously since it dropped, and it plays fine. Better than a lot of Switch exclusives. Actually, other than a lower resolution, it's a better experience than Bloodborne was on PS4 at launch.
Secondly, if Atlus cared that much about making money from ports, they'd have put the more lucrative P5 on everything by now.
@rawzeku Why should it remain a Switch exclusive even for a year? I was on the fence about buying this game, because I was worried about its performance. Let me play this the best way possible!
@4kgk2 same thing for Persona 5 too then right? Clearly more money to be made if Persona 5 came to Switch and PC?
BUT NO, we STILL don’t have P5 on PC and Switch
@Ralizah I agree! From what I have seen from YouTube videos, most of the time, the framerate stays stable with slight dips here and there but nothing too bad.
Also yeah, Atlus would have put P5 on Switch and PC by now BUT NOPE
@IonMagi Nintendo published SMT V in PAL regions. Sega published the North American version.
That mech game you are talking about is Daemon X Machina right?
@anoyonmus Framerate is a tiny bit choppy when you fuse demons, but the gameplay is pretty solid performance-wise. Impressive when you consider the scale of the environments and the number of enemies on-screen at any one time. Resolution doesn't seem to bottom out like it did with the Xenoblade games, either. The loading during fast travel is super fast, too. It's a really well-optimized game.
@Ralizah yeah.
Tbh I wouldn’t mind if this is multiplatform provided Persona 5 breakes free from PlayStation
@anoyonmus It's kinda stupid. P5 would unquestionably be better on Switch, whereas this would clearly benefit from more powerful hardware.
They either need to make their games multiplats or end the speculation about possible ports and announce that their exclusives will remain exclusive.
@Ralizah Agreed! This would be better on powerful hardware. Sure the Switch for the most part can handle it fine but it would look and run better on other platforms.
But Atlus does have a problem with exclusivity. I really want this to end
Just going to echo above comments that I am more than happy for SMT to come to other platforms as soon as mainline Persona games come to Nintendo platforms. It is only fair. =)
I’ll get it for PS4/PS5, should run great.
I’m cool with it coming to PS4, but people are overblowing the performance issues on Switch. It dips but it’s never unplayable nor does it even get in the way that much imo.
I’d definitely double dip if it comes to PC though.
I also think if they’re going to port mainline SMT to Playstation beyond Nocturne then Persona should drop its mainline Playstation exclusivity as well.
@MS7000 YES. MUCH AGREED!
Read what I said about SMT V coming to PC and PS4 earlier
@Sakisa I mean DQ 11 S on Switch had some dips in framerate too but it’s nothing bad.
Almost every video game in existence has some frame dips tbh
Portbegging is over 9000. Just buy the console if you want that game...
I thought about the off chance of it releasing on other platforms, so I decided to wait on buying it for the Switch but it does look like a really fun game.
You can already play V on PC lmao. As for the PS4, sadly I don't think those files mean anything other than maybe those were platforms they considered at one point in time. I'd definitely consider getting it sooner if it was on playstation, but the story and characters being non existent is making me wait for a while, but I highly doubt it'll go multiplat anytime during that wait
Still though, it's hilarious to see Ninty fanboys shaking in their boots going "b-but muh persona on switch", it'd be even funnier if it did happen
it is going to look lovely on the ps4. no need for a bastardized switch version now. thank you atlus for doing what makes the most sense.
Been loving the Switch version, but I'd love to see it comes to PS4/PS5 if it can run at 60fps, better draw distance, and higher resolution. I might even double dip if that turns out to be the case. Not sure why people are acting like it's unplayable on Switch, it's a little choppy in spots but it runs fine as far as I can tell. Would it run better on PS4? Probably. But it runs fine for me on Switch. Either people are exaggerating it or there's some issue with it on certain models. Likely the former.
@anoyonmus Switch can’t handle RE3 remake. I purchased RE revelations 2 on Vita and it was not pretty. I think RE3 could only work if it was build for Switch from the scratch like MH Rise or Revel 1 on 3DS
@Judal27 Yeah u can use ps3 emulator and it’s the only way to get 60 FPS on base game, still is not ideal
Oh, well. I already started it on Switch.
But this is fine on Switch and I can sell it once done - not enough reasons to wait like I had with MH:Rise (no voice chat actually impacts the game for me)
I am also in need for a handheld game for the holiday travels coming up. Fits the bill
Remember when this game was first showed and everyone was saying how better graphically it looks over persona 5, got the game on Friday and can safely say they were all very...very wrong
Great game but just poor technically and my god that glittery sand hurts my eyes
@UltimateOtaku91 I don't think anyone expected high-res textures or a high resolution for a demanding Switch title, but the 3D models for the demons are a gigantic step up over the mostly static models used in P5, and they naturalistically inhabit the massive environments in this game in large numbers.
Technically, it's extremely impressive, even if the hardware is keeping it from its full visual potential.
Pretty common practice to "test" your games in other platforms.
Anyone here remembers the Gears 3 PS3 rumours? It all started because they were testing some tech in PS3 hardware.
@dimi Im talking about smtv
Damn now i dont know if i should wait
@dimi which kinda proved my point to be honest. Datamines don’t mean everything. So maybe SMT V won’t come to PS4.
It might come to PC though.
Haven't bought this yet because I'm still sulking that I couldn't get a premium edition version, stupid scalpers.
Would certainly prefer it on playstation though.
@Sanquine I think you miss the point. On PS4/XOX/PS5/XSX you could have dramatically increased resolution, frame rate, texture quality, load times, draw distance, more detailed environments, higher poly count meshes, etc...
If the game is as great as the reviews say, on the Switch, imagine what it could be if it were allowed to stretch its legs a bit on more powerful systems.
That being said; I think its wishful thinking, its unlikely to happen.
If it comes to PC, I'll definitely get it. I never played a shin megami tensai game. Only played persona. Don't wanna play the ps2 remasters that we got recently.
@thedevilsjester i was talking about Persona 5
@Sanquine Ah, ok.
Its easy(er) to port from a lower spec machine to a higher spec machine. It's much more difficult to go the other direction (especially if you want to do it right).
Can't see it happening tbh going by Atlus' track record.
Persona 5 has no right being a PS exclusive still yet Atlus still keep it that way.
Those saying they'll wait are in for a very long wait I feel.
First two games were released for Super Famicom (in JP only), not for NES. SMT3 (PS2) was the best selling game in the main series, even before the remaster release (and still is). The point is that PS has many fans for the series and the possibility of a PS4/PS5 exists but we do not know what will happen. This will bring a lot of money to Atlus though, and they may invest to produce more games. It would be good for everyone.
I'm happy sticking with the Switch version as for me its best played in handheld due to the grindy nature. While yes its pushing the Switch to its limits i do think it looks great and is doing stuff even P5 wasn't doing visually.
so Shin Megami Tensei V is a timed exclusive game on Switch just like Monster Hunter Rise?
Ah man, was very close to buying it but now I’ll probably hang back and see if this happens or not. Fingers crossed.
Oh cool, then I guess I won't buy the Switch version.
Not interested in the Switch version, but would purchase for PS4/PS5.
I don't get the people that say that this looks good on the switch. Maybe they are looking into the future at the switch 2. It looks horrible in my eyes, a little bit better than that No More Heroes game, but still bad. Anyway, rant over, I might buy on discount if it came to PS.
@anoyonmus well Bayonetta 3 could be a timed exclusive on Switch.
@rawzeku no let others enjoy this amazing game imedietely.
@Giancarlothomaz if it was timed exclusive, why is Nintendo publishing it and why are they funding development on it and why did Kamiya say the game is coming to only Switch? Also it all depends if Nintendo wants it on other platforms (which they most likely won't)
If you recall
"Well… it would be great to have Mario, Zelda, and Metroid on the PS4 too…"
Also if you recall, Nintendo has a partnership with Nvidia since they are using a Nvidia graphics card on the Switch. The games on the list are probably there just because Nintendo is using Nvidia tech or something
@Giancarlothomaz well,
One is a company that does weird exclusivity , and the other company honors (most of the time) exclusive deals
