Sony's first State of Play livestream of 2024 has been and gone, leaving us with a whole host of all-new PS5 and PSVR2 games to consider in the year ahead. Excitement for the show was quite a bit higher than would be typical of a State of Play due to the rumours and speculation spread in the days leading up to it, so did it deliver?
As promised, Rise of the Ronin and Stellar Blade featured with fresh gameplay and a release date for the latter, while Death Stranding 2 did indeed show up with that On the Beach subtitle. Other announcements included Silent Hill: The Short Message, a new look at Silent Hill 2, and the re-reveal of Judas.
That was more than 15 PS5, PSVR2 games inside 45 minutes, so were you left satisfied once the show was over or did you still want to see more? Place a vote in our poll and share all your reactions in the comments below.

Best one I’ve ever seen quite frankly. And ANOTHER one next week? PlayStation are back. Finally.
Promising. A step in the right direction.
It was very good.
Wow. I did not believe I would be blown away by a state of play, but it finally happened.
If that’s not an excellent State of Play, I don’t know what is.
A hell of a lot better than the last one. Not really interested in FF7 Rebirth, but good for those who are. From the State of Play, interested in Stellar Blade, SonicxShadow Generations, Judas, Dragon's Dogma II, and Rise of the Ronin. Lots of stuff I have my eye on, even if it's not necessarily day 1.
Might be the best one they've ever done. Stellar Blade looks amazing and Death Stranding 2 has gone completely off the rails and I'm definitely up for it
Pretty good and better then i expected. Death Stranding 2 just looks jawdropping, like i loved the first one but this one just looks utterly incredible.
It was an okay presentation. Stellar Blade and Rise of Ronin are alive at least
That was a fantastic show and very well presented. Death Stranding 2 looks amazing, the 2 PSVR2 games look very promising as do Ronin and Stellar Blade, plus the Silent Hill stuff. Just great stuff all round.
I'm really looking forward to Metro in VR
It was pretty great. Glad to see Stellar Blade coming in April, Death Stranding 2 looks immaculate, and showcasing Judas is a huge get for Sony.
Very few things I'm interested in personally. Still little for me to look forward to on PS, with many of the games I do like coming to other platforms anyway.
Really good and a lot better than a lot of their previous presentations I gotta say; Until Dawn PS5/PC port and Sonic X Shadow Generations are definitely my personal favourite announcements but this SoP was filled with great trailers from start to finish.
I voted for Excellent, easily their best State of Play yet and much better than their last main showcase.
Actually a pretty great showcase. Stellar Blade is launching sooner than I thought, the Sonic Generations remaster looks more than impressive, The Short Message looks fun, Judas looks great as well, Death Stranding 2 looks insane as always, and we’re getting a new Kojima espionage game in probably 5 years. No Silent Hill 2 date and no first party stuff were the lowlights.
It was good but not much new…
Judas looked the best out of all. The death stranding 2 is just Kojima being too high on smokes. Else I don't even know, pass on all except
Judas.
Really good state of play. That death stranding 'trailer' was just complete and utter kojima, genuinely thought it was about to end like 5 times. Things looking up for 2024
@Savage_Joe OKjust OK what did you want blood?
Some bangers in there, solid 8/10
A few games for me, so that was good. And DS2 will be a day one - and 2025 gives me time to get around the finishing the first one. Still concerned that no real sniffs of what any of the 1st party studios have in the horizon - does this mean 2025 at the earliest for any of them? Will be a lean year for me if that’s the case.
Maybe I am missing something but most games were not stellar.. except stellar blade.. Metro for VR is nice though.
Also maybe it’s me but Rise of the ronin looks uglier than GoT?
Its was Okay. Can't say anything shown was a day one, must buy for me.
Very good, far more impressive than recent ones.
Slick presentation too nothing overstayed it’s welcome.
And a shadow drop.
Stellar Blade looked good. Silent Hill 2 looked decent. Foamstars, that'll be fun. Rise of Ronin, already locking down. Death Stranding 2 and a new Metal Gear replacement in the works (from how he worded "Tactical Espionage"). Excellent... though this now set the bar up high for future State of Plays now.
I think it was good. There were plenty of solid games shown. The trouble was there were very few surprises or new things, it was almost all second or third showings.
Very good show! Lots of interesting games and Stellar Blade and Death Stranding look insanely polished
Also that Metal Gear solid spiritual successor announcement 🥰
Everything looked really good.
But one thing is bothering me… I couldn’t tell if the Until Dawn re-release was a remaster or remake. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
2/5, Judas & DS2 looked great, but I’ll pass on the rest
Reallycant ask for much more than that from a state of Play. If i had to nit pick id say rise of the ronin and Silent Hill 2 underwhelmed, but a release date for the fab looking Stellar Blade, footage for Judas, Sonic, Death Stranding, Helldivers, a little something for VR really made the show stand out. Well done Sony. Now off to download the Silent Hill Short Message which looks and sounds excellent
Man that was lame
Best in a long while. Good mixture of games and plenty arriving soon. A few more dates would have been great, but overall I'd say very good.
@lightningbolt79 what are you looking forward to please? Maybe I could get so.e ideas from you.
Excellent, intrested in almost everything shown.
Hairs stood up on my arms when Hideo confirmed his new project. A spiritual successor to MGS is the stuff of dreams for me.
Will say that Death Stranding looks better than the first game, which I honestly did not love like some did.
Great showcase, I can't remember the last time they showed so many games I'm interested in. Nice variety along with games releasing soon and a year away. Hopefully, they keep this kind of standard for future ones (the exception being the one-game showcases like FF7 Rebirth). Very happy.
That's a nice one. Could be a little more awesome with more projects from Sony Studios. But even this way damn good.
10/10. Reasoning? Cats.
Average at best.
That was absolute 10/10 for me! Had lowered expectations as usual for these events but that one had me hooked for the full go with only a couple of hits dragging slightly...Bravo...👏
It was good and we really still don't have anything from PlayStation 1st party, which is fascinating and still expected as they shift from the Ryan era.
Sonic X Shadow Generations was pure hype, Stellar Blade looks awesome. Death Stranding 2 looks absolutely insane. FF7 Rebirth next week!
Things are looking good even with the PlayStation Studios giants still hiding, gonna be a fun year!
Zzz. Hopefully PlayStation can recover from Jim Ryan's tenure before the PS5 era is over
Way better than last year’s showcase, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin and Death Stranding 2 look amazing, a bit disappointed that DS2 is 2025 tho.
They can say as Playstation Showcase, but they downplay it.
Solid lineup
Helldivers 2 👍👍👍
Stellar Blade 👍👍👍👍
Sonic Generation 👎
ZZZ 👍
Foamstars 👍👍
Dave the Diver 👍👍👍
Rising 👍👍
Sillent Hill:Short 👍👍👍👍
Silent Hill 2 👍👍👍👍
Judas 👍👍👍👍👍
Metro Awakening 👍👍
Legendary Tales 👎👎
Dragon's Dogma 2 👍👍👍👍
Rise of The Ronin 👍👍👍👍👍
Until Dawn 👍👍👍👍
Death Stranding 2 👍👍👍👍👍
New Kojima IP 🤷♂️
Fantastic for a State of Play.
Still waiting for a new Jak and Daxter and Sly Cooper game. Make it happen Sony. My personal wishful Comments aside, this was a good presentation.
If their showcase later in the year will be of similar quality, just first party-wise. Good lord... Yeah, for a SoP this was really good.
Have to laugh at the usual haters comments 😂, so predictable.
@itsfoz You've got to be kidding.
Really curious about the second half of the year. Sony has to have at least one big exclusive for the fall. Glad to see kojima is getting back into the stealth/espionage game. Could never get I to death stranding but might give it a second chance.
I'm kinda shocked. I genuinely thought they would have some meaningful surprises. Wth is going on with Sony.
Stellar blade and Ronin both did not show well there. With Ronin in particular I was hoping to gather more through this showing aside from a basic montage.
Such sterile presentations for really everything aside from the walking simulator sequel. That was a cool showing despite not liking the first one at all. Maybe this will be more.
Overall, though, that just felt forced. A bunch of games that have been out months and years being ported over alongside stuff we've already seen. Not one thing, not even a teaser for a first party project.
Just bad and again very sterile show. Shocked but only because it's more of the same from current Gen Sony. I just don't understand the vision that PlayStation saw in approaching this gen in the way they have on many fronts. It's like they have thrown away much that garnered them goodwill and made them so beloved as a platform and instead see us as marks to siphon from with every predatory corporate gimmick in the book. WTH happened.
@Tomato_Goose hopefully we see something at a summer showcase. We need atleast one big exclusive for the fall.
Looking forward to Dave the Diver, Sonic, Until Dawn and that V Rising looked v good too.
Stellar Blade looked amazing, Rise of the Ronin looked good(graphics seem a bit dated but it is Koei Tecmo so that sometimes is to be expected), Death Stranding 2 looked amazing yet crazy at the same time. The Silent Hill games looked interesting(never played a Silent Hill game before) have to give the free one a try today. V Rising and the Metro VR game look cool. Dragon's Dogma and Sonic looked cool as well.
Also Zenless Zone Zero finally being announced for PS5 is great news, and I'm happy they showed Helldivers and Foamstars. Can't wait to play those two games this month(mainly Foamstars for now).
Judas is the game I want to see more of, as a huge Bioshock fan I can't wait to see the story and the mechanics of that game. It looks amazing.
Overall pretty good, a little disappointed with the lack of depth to the Rise of The Ronin "deep dive" though. I felt like I did not really learn anything new. It would have been nice to get confirmation of the adaptive difficulty styles and a bit more on how the story is dynamic. I am even unsure if this has an English dub.
Stellar Blade was a very nice surprise and gave some good depth to what the game was about - I think I'm going to pre order this first and wait for more info/reviews on Rise of the Ronin.
Best SOP in recent year
Shockingly bad. I was amped up for a real show but we got a neon eye-bleeder and a ton of early PS4 graphics. The first game went on way too long and was really stock looking. The DS2 was painfully long and looked awful. Kojima-san is so bad at this. I genuinely think he stands on the shoulders of brilliant programmers because his concepts and stories are awful.
Really like the Diablo style game and the Ronin game looks AWESOME. Outside of that everything was a worringly poor show.
@UltimateOtaku91 People can have a negative opinion and not be haters.
I did a little cheer when I saw Dave the river was getting a PS release. Also hyped for the Silent Hill stuff and Judas looks promising too. Good stuff.
Ronin continues to have me hyped. I was hyped for the new Kojima announcement until they mentioned movie/game then it died a little. Not really much else but Judas (as a big Bioshock fan) butnot every game has to be for me, so a solid enough show
Fantastic showcase, definitely excited for what’s heading to the PS5!
Another bonus is that the majority of these games will be on PS5 only, console wise.
It was good ,but where was sonys big hitters ,cant wait to see what they've been working on,death stranding 2 looks stunning...stunning but nuts ,the stop motion of that little guy was inspired ,I want a figure with different heads ,ha ha
the fact that kojima and sony are working on a spirtual successor to metal gear is pretty great , silent hill looked good , death stranding 2 looked really good. looking forward to judas i loved bioshocked. owning a psvr2 im looking forward to metro. overall i thought it was a pretty good showing.
No Concord is disappointed.
Sony's 1st party offerings this year are:
Helldivers 2
Stellar blade
Rise of the Ronin
Until Dawn
And Concord.
Regardless of whether you don't class them as 1st party, Sony clearly do and they won't be keeping some big game secret for late 2024 at this point.
@Jammsbro definitely, but I'm talking about the usuals who are negative about everything to do with playstation.
And Death Stranding 2 and Stellar Blade look awful to you? Yet both visually were miles better than Rise of the Ronin.
I don’t think I saw anything I’ll play this year. Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin look like hood games but not for full price.
I’m glad for the people that are hyped, for me this just reinforced my view that if you don’t like shooters or 3rd person action games, 2024 looks pretty dry.
Looking forward to the FF7 SoP next week though.
Anything related to Dragons Dogma gets a approval from me.
Absolutely loved it. Incredible show I thought 😁
So many games in there that seriously got me excited.
Possibly the best SoP they've done 👌
It’s was ok, of course some games where multiplatform.
The exclusives for 2024 seem ok but not totally convincing, left me with the same feeling as the Xbox showcase last week.
Ok but nothing sensational for 2024 really.
I just long for something from the main AAA Sony studios like we had the first two years of PS5.
As I predicted the back end of last year 2023 this won’t be a vintage year for me personally on PS5, unless something is announced for the end of this year from one of the Sony AAA campaign studios.
So far this year form both camps it’s all a bit limp.
That leaves going on current information for Nintendo to rescue my year in the second half of 2024.
That's the best SOP I've seen in a long time. Much better than the last showcase.
Really hyped for a lot of the games, but Stellar blade really surprised me. Much more depth to the game than I thought it would have.
And Metro VR looked awesome, the Metro universe with their gun play, day one for me.
Those Rise of the Ronin and Dragons Dogma trailers are making it seriously hard not to purchase day 1. Fantastic trailers. Stellar Blade looks great
And tbh that DS2 trailer really made me want to finally try out the first game. Hopefully those Amazon employee simulator memes are a bit overblown lol
Great to see that many people liked the showing. To each their own.
I don’t like the grim sci-fi interactive storytelling or grim sword-action game focus of Sony anymore. Burnt out on it. And I haven’t seen any ‘fun’ or ‘new’ gameplay this state of play. So this year is not for me unfortunately.
Looking forward to dragons dogma ii and ff7 rebirth though. And curious about the new kojima collaboration.
@itsfoz Definitely and will only get better once they start showing their first party stuff. Actually feels like the old PS1, PS2 days where Playstation was full of great Japanese games, especially this year Sony should be breaking some hardware sales records.
Really enjoyed this sop, this year is going to be very gd I think ,plenty to look forward to and also with ds2 next year I'll have to get round to playing ds1 sometime this year and also love what appears to be metal gear coming back a gd while down the line
Good show. Stellar Blade looks really great! I'm most looking forward to that one. Plus Kojima's other other other game.
I feel so out of touch with modern PlayStation as nothing truly excited me but happy for everyone that loved it. Anyone else reverting back to older titles? I’ve had the urge to play Vagrant Story again and boot up the psone …
I think I finally figured out why I never liked these. It isn’t the games, it’s the format. It’s just a trailer playlist with nothing to sell the games. It’s boring to watch and since they upload the trailers straight to YouTube after anyway, what’s the point in watching this.
I would rate it “okay” for my tastes, nothing shown that really appealed. Team ninja games are very very similar in terms of combat and enemy type - I’ve played and finished every one to date, the latest being wo long last year. Not sure I’m ready to jump into another just 12 months after the last.
Lots of anime waifu style Japanese games showcased which aren’t my thing. Death stranding 2 had exception production values, the decima engine is outstanding, and plenty of craziness. I found the first incredibly boring from a gameplay perspective and couldn’t gel with the delivery sim aspects, so sadly, I doubt I’ll be playing the second as I never finished the first. Not many dates provided either.
Happy for those that were hyped from this state of play. I’m still waiting on news from naughty dog to rekindle my PlayStation hype levels.
@AdamNovice Concord probably gets TLOU'd. What a dumpster fire
Stellar blade and metro VR makes it good. More VR games would have made it a lot better
@AdamNovice I class them as Second party which is still significant exclusives as Sony are part funding these games and publishing them. There's probably more for this year that's not been announced yet, definitely their best year for PS5 so far especially when you add in Silent Hill, Granblue Fantasy Relink and FF7 ReBirth as they are only on playstation.
@KundaliniRising333
Ah good, I was worried I was seeing far too much positivity being spread around here. Thank you for your service
@TandyMiller It's Monster Hunter: World and backlog stuff for me. I'll play Helldivers, FF Rebirth, and maybe DD2 this year but that seems to be it. Sucks!!
State of play was very good.i enjoy it a lot.word up son
@RicebinBernacky Some of us were hoping to see new video games from Sony.
@TandyMiller not a ps one title, but I recently got days gone on pc having missed it when it released on ps4. Enjoying it a lot, great story so far, a bit slow at the start and gameplay isn’t anything revolutionary, but the world building is very compelling. Could never get into state of decay on Xbox including the sequel - days gone feels like the perfect hybrid between it and the last of us.
@VaultGuy415 yah I figured with them announcing 15 addl games we'd be surprised with something. Nope!
it was REALLY GOOD!
I really liked almost everything shown, the only thing that could’ve been skipped is Dave the diver but it was short so thats fine!
It was a better PS Showcase then the last official PS Showcase. Very good start to the year, wish we got more VR, but the 2 games shown were juicy. We're getting back to back 2nd party exclusives for the first quarter. Plus, they chucked a fan pleasing tidbit like Kojima is making a PS5 original spy thriller, that blew me away (and it wasnt done via a random blog post). The secrative Ryan era feels over.
@TandyMiller Not so much on playstation but on the switch I've been playing the Golden Sun games, it's refreshing to go back to older titles some times. I'd love more PS1/PS2 JRPG's to hit Ps Plus Premium.
I thought it was VERY good, bordering on great. Outside of some small filler and the underwhelming Silent Hill section, it was easily the best PlayStation presentation in over a year.
Everything about it was so much better. It felt important, first and foremost. But they didn't waste too much time chatting, they got to the content, and broke it up when they needed to.
Good length, lots of great games, and a good mix of surprises/updates on upcoming games. I really enjoyed it!
Not perfect but easily one of the better State of Plays. Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin both look great, not far off from release. Death Stranding 2 and talks of a new IP with SIE after DS2 development, along with looks at other games. Dave the Diver coming to PS is neat too, started playing on Steam Deck and loved it. Very tempted to double dip
Love the phasing and pretty much gameplay focused. Kinda spent more time with Kojima near the end though but it's all good.
This SoP made me hyped for Stellar Blade more now
I love everything about this State of Play. Well done.
Sony, quit partnering with Arrowhead, Team Ninja, and SHIFT UP and bring them in house. You have a long way to go to counter Microsoft's Bethesda acquisition, let alone the disastrous ABK acquisition.
Anyone else get Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen vibes from V? I was sure it was a remake until they announced the name.
I thought it was mostly very good. Wasn’t so interested in Stellar Blade before today but it showed off very well! Judas looks amazing also. DS2 looked great and as somebody who has never played, or really had any interest in DS1, it did make me consider giving DS1 a go.
I have to say, I didn’t think much to the graphics of Rise of the Ronin.
Very good SoP, most excited for Sonic X Shadow Generations by far though in general the pacing was well done, had a rather nice balance of games and Sony seems to have learned that shadow drops are very important for Direct style presentations.
@KundaliniRising333
They literally shadowdropped a new, unannounced Silent Hill. Not to mention a new Sonic and new Metro
Stellar Blade got even more exciting for me
Just okayish at best! Death Stranding being the highlight but too far away still..
Disappointed with Stellar Blade and a bit with Silent Hill 2, hope it's a very early build as it felt a bit underwhelming, average visuals, sound and animations kinda weird.
Rise of Ronin just not for me, could't get along with Nioh and I like and played souls games recently, like Lies of P and Lords of the Fallen..
@VaultGuy415 Doubt it. They still insisting it's coming this year. Besides there a newly acquired studio I don't think Sony will be cancelling their game without good reason.
For me it was just okay overall, but by God does Death Stranding look absolutely amazing.
Nothing mind blowing. Same stuff that was already announced for years. Only surprise was the SH short message thing.
@RicebinBernacky sonic was leaked and none of these were first party stuff anyway
I usually don't care much for State of Plays but this one was definitely a good one for me. I didn't know much about Stellar Blade before but the game looks great. I never played Death Stranding before but the sequel looks interesting, maybe I'll finally give that free copy I got on Epic Games a go. Also, Kojima making another "Metal Gear" style game sounds cool, even if that's something that's 5-10 years away lol. Sonic Generations remake looks cool and the Shadow DLC is welcome. Metro Awakening VR has potential, too.
Overall... not incredible but a very good showing.
I enjoyed theittle snippets of their team members as well like a hark back to the old conferences.
@Shad361
Not sure why that's relevant. State of Plays never have big first party reveals. Anyone expecting that was setting themselves up for disappointment
All I care about is Stellar Bkade a day 1 purchase
Really liked the pacing, mostly gameplay and the dev talks were short and too the point. Stylish ending with kojima. Metro vr looks really good.
Didn't see it just the highlights. Stellar Blade and Metro for me is fine. The rest are fine just not my thing. I'll watch the trailers later.
I thought it was good, but still a bit disappointing considering almost everything that was shown we already knew about. Obviously it's good that we got dates for Rise of the Ronin and Stellar Blade, but it would have been nice to get something from actual 1st party that we didn't already know about.
Also a bit disappointing that Ronin is releasing a month after Rebirth, as I know there's no way I'll finish Rebirth in time, so I'll have to pass for the time being. Given the complete lack of anything coming after Stellar Blade so far, I'm not sure why they are having one big release a month.
Overall, it was their best State of Play in a while (the bar was extremely low), but I just can't bring myself to say it was amazing or anything. Basically anything major we already knew was going to be there. A date for Stellar Blade keeps it from being bad alone, but the last nugget (other than the FF7 Rebirth SoP that I will be skipping) being that Kojima is making an exclusive spiritual successor to MGS was met with a shrug by me as it won't be out until the PS6. Great for at least 6 years from now, but again, that's did little for me now.
@Bagwag82 I wanted games actually made by Sony’s own studios…. Everything shown were third party timed exclusives
@AdamNovice Yeah, I think that’s the way we have to look at things. And you could even add Foamstars.
Sony has put a lot of effort into second party projects and third party console exclusives. As gamers we need to just consider those as “first party” for now. Some of the studios may end up acquired into the first party if their games go well, like they did with Bluepoint and Housemarque.
When taken in that context, PlayStation is set to have an incredible year, even without anything from first party
Not bad at all. And Certainly a huge improvement or recent SoP's.
I enjoyed the state of the play. It was solid and I was really surprised Stellar Blade is April. I thought it would have been later in the year. Luckily it drops real close to my birthday so I'll make someone buy it for me. 😁
@Savage_Joe Stellar Blade, Rise of Ronin, HellDivers 2, Silent Hill 2, Death Stranding 2, Foamstars, Zenlees Zone Zero and the VR games are not timed exclusives, you won't be playing these games on Xbox or Nintendo consoles.
@RicebinBernacky oh he knows, even if Sony showed TLOU 3, Ghost of Tushima 2, Wolverine, Uncharted 5, Next God of War, Killzone 5, Horizon 3 etc these same people would still say it was lame.
It was ok. Stellar Blade looks awesome (fortunately it doesn't appear Sony's had them censor much, if anything), Sonic x Shadow Generations and Judas were both cool and, though I'm not a fan of the type of game it is, Rise of the Ronin should be very good for people who do enjoy that genre. Everything else was pretty meh, most disappointingly, Silent Hill 2. It is early in development, to be fair, but it still looked rough and frankly, I don't trust Bloober Team at all after the way some people there have been talking.
I rated it excellent. Really no complaints at all. Almost all of the content looked like something I'd be interested in trying out.
It wasn’t for me.
I liked Judas.
Death Stranding, Helldivers, Dragons Dogma all looked decent.
The majority of the others reminded me a eastern/anime C level PS3 PS4 games.
The fact that Helldivers is rarely mentioned across multiple apps tells me that sucker is going to land with a thud. Hell, it’s barely mentioned in these comments.
It feels like the PS3 era to me: lots of drab colours and depressing realism. Lots of technically amazing games for those who are into them, but this has just reaffirmed that PS5 doesn't really have any games that I'm interested in. Silent Hill 2 did look very like Resident Evil though. That'll hopefully be good.
Rate: Okay
Positives:
Helldivers 2 bringing the mechs back(had no doubt they would lol)
Stellar Blade(still not convinced on the story, that part is likely going to suck but the gameplay looks fun so whatever)
Rise of Ronin looks fun(but rough around the edges)
Dave the Diver on PlayStation. Been wanting this since I first saw it posted on here last year.
Death Stranding 2 - They showed more than enough, I think im already on DS2 blackout going forward.
Interested:
Judas
Silent Hill 2 is here instead of the just on the positive side as it looked more rough than expected. The animations need to be better.
The PSVR games looked interesting but i've still yet to actually commit to buying one.
Meh:
Sonic x Shadow Generations
FoamStars(still the plan to play this at least for a little bit as I did has some fun with the beta)
Zenless Zone Zero(didn't know what to make of it but we'll see)
This really was a great show. Getting a release date for Stellar Blade was great and we are now set for the next 3 months with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in February, Rise of the Ronin in March, and Stellar Blade in April. On top of that, a new Silent Hill game getting shadow dropped and, my god, Death Stranding 2....
@Sanquine I was thinking the same thing with Rise of Ronin. Although Team Ninja has never been known for top graphics. Their combat however looks amazing.
Good to see Sony break the silence, but the most imminent are very poor which isn't a good start.
Helldivers has almost zero characterisation hell (oops) even Outriders did better, definitely no Destiny here. Was going to give it a chance with the pc version but that comes with the worst anti cheat root kit ever so most pc players won't touch it either.
The other one, Foamstars, too cartoony can't see what the hell is happening and it's live service so that's straight down the plughole free or not.
I'm hoping Stellar Blade has a decent story to it.
Will still be buying Banishers though on release if it reviews well. At least there is a story to that.
Also, the shadow drop so reminded me of PT...
Overall a great show, but I wish there were a few more PSVR2 games announced. Ideally, some first party.
All I cared about was Steller Blade and the now-very-real Sonic Generations remaster and I got to see them both very early on, I'm satisfied with just that.
Very underwhelming SOP. Not a fan of Kojima, so with him out of the way, so many of the games looked like PS4 games. Dave the Diver and Gojira was so bad it was good haha.
Foamstars is coming to PS+. That’s great news in one aspect but I think the REAL reason is because there’s no demand for it.
It was better than last year’s SOP but that’s not saying much when you consider that was a disaster.
STILL no first party output outside of Insomniac for over a year. That’s unbelievable.
Edit: Forgot to mention Silent Hill 2. That looked REALLY UNDERWHELMING. Poor visuals.
February-April is stacked, 8/10
Very good pacing, very polished. Maybe no super big surprises and maybe not the largest variety. But overall a very good show.
For me the only (likely) disappointing bit is that so many of the shown games look like they would be awesome in VR or even tailored for VR ... but then do not get a VR mode. I also really would like to explore the world of Stellar Blade in VR. The world looks really interesting ... but that would be a very different game in VR, I guess.
Removed - trolling
no first party games at all in his showcase
I saw plenty of games I'm interested in, that's more than enough for me. Anyone expecting big new reveals in a State of Play in January was setting themselves up for disappointment. There will be a time and place for those, and this was never going to be it.
It was ok-ish... somewhat...
More so than I was expecting, given last year's abysmal experiences...
As a con (for me at least) they presented a lot of trailers from "oriental"-style games... a style that never appealed to me.
And didn't show any trailer for any of the PS Studios IP's... again!
At least it had a trailer for Silent Hill 2, that looks very well - can't wait to replay it.
The "Short message" one... not so much, too "teeny", and too much based on jump scares instead of building up atmosphere...
And then there's Death Stranding 2 of course, eye catching as always.
So I guess it's a good step forward (or backwards, towards the showcases "of old" that were fun to see...).
As a recommendation to Sony though - stop focusing those showcases on multiplatform games, and excluding PS Studios IP's completely.
It's what many of us bought (and buy) the Playstation consoles for! We need some kind of roadmap, a hint, a teaser, something other than dry tweeter messages.
What is Bluepoint working on? "Are they still there?" to paraphrase the turret from Portal : )
How about Sucker Punch, is Ghost of Tsushima 2 in developement ?
That's what many of us want to see!
I tought is was excelent.
Stellar Blade, Judas and Death Stranding 2 where my highlights. The ending with Hermen and Hideo was so awesome, I mean a new MGS like game!
@trev666 I don't really know why people care so much about this. Those teams are obviously making games, but the most important thing is that the PS5 has a very healthy lineup of upcoming software — regardless of who's publishing it/making it.
And it does!
This was a good one.
But can only guess how many more games we would have seen if Sony hadn't made its ill-advised all-in live service attempt (and the cancellations of most of those after).
@get2sammyb But surely you can understand Sony fans want to know what there studios are working on. Most of the games will be availble on xbox. Sadly if its not a remake/remaster, sequel or a soulslike Sony dont seem interested. And it looks like they have all but given up on PSVR2 after a year
Was OK. A few red flags with Silent Hill 2 but it was just a combat trailer and SH2 never had riveting combat. Just hope it's decent because it's not going to live up to the original. Christ Konami couldn't even port/remaster the magic from the original so bloober have little hope to capture the lightning but I pray it's decent.
Basically the show showed 2nd and 3rd party is doing all the heavy lifting at the moment for Sony. I have no idea why they cant tease something from one of there big studios just to give the fans something. This also extends to VR with Sony still not producing any games for PSVR2 not even a token PSVR2 version of Astrobot.
The showcase showed the industry is in a bit of a rut with most games being sequels, remakes/remasters or souls likes. Least Judas looked new and interesting. But it does seem what most fans want going by the reaction to this article.
Dave the diver is already out on Switch isnt it? Sony seems very late to the party on some of these big indie games. Still hasn't got Vampire survivors but that maybe more to do with Microsoft then Sony.
The show was not clearly advertised as being titles from our '3rd and 2nd party studios' so they should have made this more clear. To be fair - though I read that from Sony, they did not put that on the blog post....
@bindiana
Much as I really want Judas, if you think its new you need to play the 3 bioshock games that came before. It looks exactly like Bioshock 4. Thats a good thing, but its hardly new.
@Titntin Thats a fair point but just proves my point more that most big studios don't seem to have any originallity in them which is very disappointing to me.
@bindiana
Yeah, I definately sympathise with that view.
But when so many new games are the downfall of their studio, and with AAA titles being so expensive to craft these days, its tough to blame those in charge for relying on a proven IP.
If you want completely new ideas, the only studios that can take that risk tend to be indies. Fortunately, I'm also happy to play 'evolved ideas' on a proven IP too, so I'm still enjoying my AAA gaming , prehaps now more than ever before after 40 years of adult gaming.
Thinking about it, though its been over 15 years since I last worked on a AAA title, during 20 years of development at least %50 of my titles were proven IP's (such as Dungeon Keeper 2, GTA3 etc). Most of the times I was laid off when the studio closed it was on new IP's... things really havent changed that much.
Starting with live services made me grumpy but it got better. Still no real racing VR sim.

This was I believe a first State of Play I have not watched in real-time as I really didn't think any of the games were a must for me. But man, after watching it today, I was wrong. Pretty good offering, 5-6 games I'll keep a close eye on and few more that wouldn't surprise me ending up being great.
Loved the show quite a bit. Would have to give it an 8/10! I am with everyone else here that I want to see what the big teams at Sony are doing but I know we will get that in due time. Lots to eat up before then.
Maybe 8 from 10 it was great State of Play
It was alright. Outside of DS2 and until dawn wasn't anything there that particularly intreasted me personally except SH2 looking pretty jank 😅
Excellent. Death Stranding 2 trailer is mind melting. Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin looking great. Silent Hill always good to see and a new Kojima espionage title in the works feels like a dream.
@eeriejungle Kojima said that will be a culmination of his entire career. He mentioned he is coming up to his 40th anniversary for entering the Games industry. I wonder if he will retire after that, especially as that game is likely 4-6 years away at this point.
@theSpectre would make sense for him to retire after a milestone, exciting to think this could be his greatest game if that is the case. Even more exciting that it could be on PS6!
Average at best.
7/10 for me. Whenever 3rd party stuff gets revealed or updated on a platform-specific event, I don't really count it in terms of the strength of that event. As far as the PlayStation exclusive stuff is concerned, not a lot of "new" stuff was announced or revealed, but I'm sure Sony is saving those big announcements for a full-on Showcase event.
@SleeplessKnight Well, if you go by Phil Spencer's reasoning, there was a lot of first party stuff at the State of Play: Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, Death Stranding 2, Until Dawn, for example are all first party IPs, just not made by first party studios.
Why were people expecting first party games? This was a State of Play not a Showcase. They usually do big reveals and first party stuff at a Playstation Showcase and a State of Play is ongoing projects and third party announcements.
@XboxistheBestBox So you don't know the difference between a Showcase and SOP. Why you even here?
Steller Blade alone made this State of Play worth it
1 less AAA First Party game for 2024 as in none.
