Our individual Game of the Year articles allow our lovely team of writers to share their own personal PS5 and PS4 picks for 2023. Today, it's the turn of editor Sammy Barker.
5. Horizon Call of the Mountain
To be fair, PSVR2 had a strong end to the year, but the headset undoubtedly lulled following its exceptional launch. I’m not really sure what Sony’s plan is for the peripheral, but it did blow me away on day one. Horizon Call of the Mountain, alongside Polyphony Digital’s excellent free Gran Turismo 7 update, truly helped demonstrate the capabilities of the device at launch. This game, with its emphasis on rock climbing and outrageous scale, had my jaw on the floor at times – and while I don’t necessarily think it’s the best title in an unprecedentedly strong year, paired with the power of PlayStation’s new headset, I think it helps serve as a reminder of what’s possible with virtual reality when the investment is there.
4. A Space for the Unbound
I like that we’re getting to a point where developers aren’t afraid to share their culture. There are multiple titles this year that are indicative of a time and place, like the wonderful Tchia for example – but A Space for the Unbound just so happens to be the one that I managed to squeeze into my busy schedule. Set in Indonesia during the 1990s, this slower-paced action adventure is both magical and poignant – and while I would have preferred a truly grounded story, I think it manages to blend its superpowers with a relatable plot that doesn’t pull any punches. Pair all that with pitch-perfect pixel art, and you have a game that truly elevates itself above its peers in an increasingly crowded indie space.
3. Hogwarts Legacy
While I enjoyed the first few Harry Potter games on PS1 and PS2, I always felt the franchise was ripe for a big budget open world adaptation. Hogwarts Legacy, for the longest time, seemed too good to be true, then – but impressively, the final product didn’t fall short of my expectations. While I was hoping for a little less combat and a little more Bully, the end product genuinely delighted me from start to finish. The star of the show is the eponymous school, of course, but I loved exploring the surrounding areas as well – including the iconic Hogsmeade and beyond. The story genuinely gripped me, and I even found the copious collectibles quite moreish to track down. I think a sequel could certainly refine a lot of the release’s rougher aspects, but this is undoubtedly one of my personal favourites of the generation thus far.
2. Street Fighter 6
I’m not good at Street Fighter 6 – or any of its forebears – but I am a big fan. I’ve practically played every game in the series, including the stinking Street Fighter 5 – which, admittedly, recovered from its barebones launch thanks to great support. This latest iteration has been outstanding since day dot, though: superb artwork, a fantastic combat system, and more content than I have time to consume. I absolutely love the interactive lobby system, which captures the essence of hazy old arcades – and even the single player story mode, daft and dumb as it is, has gobbled up the better part of my year. Capcom has been riding high for a while now, and I genuinely believe this is the best Street Fighter has ever been. Come at me!
1. Honkai: Star Rail
I actually got my first taste of Honkai: Star Rail around this time last year, when I identified it could catch on and promptly signed up for the beta; I’ve been playing non-stop pretty much ever since. This is a game I play every day, and while my PS5 may tell you I’ve put in 500 hours since its console launch, my iPhone’s burnt-out battery will speak of hundreds more. I love the turn-based combat, and the regular in-game events. I love the character designs, and the outstanding sci-fi soundtrack. I even love the gacha system; the sense of stakes and luck and risk. The writing is overwrought and I understand the daily grind is not for everyone, but for better or worse, this game has taken over my life. I simply couldn’t vote for anything else!

Wow. Nice list. Good to see Hogwarts.
Yup HSR has taken over most of my gaming time. I even log in to their website daily for the extra rewards. I've never done that for any other game.
Cool list Sammy, great shout for Call of the of the Mountain, haven't finished it yet (only got PSVR2 for Xmas) but it is a technical show piece.
Honkai Star Rail probably has me more intrigued than BG3 but my addictive personality puts me of trying it for fear of playing nothing else!
All the best for 2024, Keep up the good work!
PS. can we have please have more gaming travel blogs in 2024, they were great reads!!
Knew it had to be Genshin for you but since it didn't release this year, had to go for Honkai haha. For someone who couldn't stand Persona 5's text, there's no way you were going to survive BG3. I haven't even played it but judging from Divinity OS2, the text sometimes...arrghh, the Narrator has to hit me with 1000 lines of text just for touching a statue.
Nice top pick! I can't fault the game. I'm all in on Tower of Fantasy though which is borderline broken, often unfathomable and rough as a bears arse all round but that combat system wipes the floor with any of HoYo's current games (imho). Really looking forward to ZZZ from HoYo. The combat in that game looks superb!
Unrelated query. Anyone notice ps stars not loading properly today? My level and progress bar is blank. On app obviously
@TheArt I respect BG3 is clearly an incredible game, but it’s not a game for me at all.
@Mostik Thank you! I have some more of the travel stuff coming very soon!
I completely forgot about ‘A Space for the Unbound’, I need to check that out!
Hogwarts was a decent game, the devs put a lot of effort into it which shows, particularly around the school. I started playing Street Fighter 6 recently and it seems quite cool, the gradual progression in the story mode beats having to memorise moves from a list for me.
Awesome list, Sammy. Your tastes are always all over the place and I really respect that. Glad to see A Space for the Unbound, Hogwarts, and Street Fighter get a nod all at once, games I don’t feel enough people talked about this year.
@get2sammyb Same. I like RPGs so I gave BG3 a chance. I played it for about 15h and I can definitely tell that it's a very incredible game, but the combat, the RNG, the complexity etc just isn't for me
While I’m always glad to see PSVR2 given at least a little of the love it deserves, Call of the Mountain is not even in the top 10 PSVR2 games released this year. I guess it was bundled and so one of the most played though. And it was still very good.
@get2sammyb Did you pull for Ruan Mei? I've got Tingyun E6 amd Bronya E1 so not sure if I should get her or save my jades for when Penacony gets released plus we're getting Dr Ratio for free not sure if Hoyo would be generous enough to give his LC for free too though. One can only hope.
@MrGilly69 it starts anew every year I believe.
Finally somebody gives hogwarts a bit of love and attention. I agree that it has a few (very few) rough edges but I'm really finding it hard to decide if hogwarts or lies of p is my goty. To be honest I have 4 goty contenders 🤔
Good to see Call of the Mountain getting respect. Such a good game and its execution in VR is amazing.
I really need to get around to A Space for the Unbound. I've been waiting for a significant sale, but it seems like a game I wouldn't mind paying full price for.
The only one game i probably agree in that list is hogwarts legacy.but Baldur's gate 3.spiderman 2.dead space renake.octopath traveler 2 and alan wake 2 is all instant classics.word up son
Always nice to see different choices. Honkai has taken over my PS5 too. 250 hours and counting on there plus tablet when away/in bed.
Who have you got @get2SammyB would love to hear more about your HSR journey/account.
I didn’t start till second banner of 1.4 so am well behind, but other than grinding character levels the only major thing I missed out on was Silver Wolf’s free S5 weapon / Light cone from the event. (A bit annoying as I have Silver Wolf now). Just got Ruin Mei and E6 Tingyun on the new banner but now need to save for DHIL or Jingliu reruns as I need another top DPS. Dr Ratio for free will be nice in the interim and due another 5-star on the standard banner soon. (Bronya pretty please)
Great game but gating and grind is a chore at times. Can’t stop playing regardless.
Nice eclectic list!
Reading about the HSR experience is scaring me! I spent 5 years addicted to Summoners Wars on android. The thought of daily tasking and gatcha mechanics is getting my spidey senses tingling. Danger! 🤣
I love that the staff lists are so diverse. You’re staff writers for a PlayStation blog, cover all the major releases, but if a grindy mobile/console game is what you enjoy, then that is your number 1 game!
It’s not an award for best game, just a nice little insight into the varied tastes of gamers. I know some true gamers who have played hundreds and maybe thousands of varied titles in their lives but have spent all year playing Call of Duty with their friends. Its all good!
@get2sammyb
Hugely off topic and probably not the best way to contact you or a member of the editorial team, couldn't find a private message option, but thought I'd run this by you.. since Christmas Day, purchases made on the playstation network have not been rewarding stars to a number of users.
A few forums have a bit of chatter about it, I just wondered if anyone else has had a similar problem and if so, is there enough traction for an article on Push square to investigate and reach out to Sony.
Cheers.
@TheOldHunter4K yep, I didn’t get my points for a purchase made yesterday.
@themightyant I'm surprised there isn't a HSR forum on here yet. Would love to know more about players character setups and team synergies especially with Memories of Chaos up to Lv12 now and I just barely survive 9.
@z0d15g0d I did get Ruan Mei but I'm still levelling her up so not properly used her yet.
@MB81 @TheOldHunter4K Same issue for me as well!
@themightyant Unbelievably, I've unlocked every character so far apart from Gepard. I'm ashamed to admit I have whaled a little bit, though! (Although nothing TOO crazy!)
Your individual list's nr# 1 is ... checks notes Honky Gacha!? What the literal hell is that for a choice of game😑 I mean... Time you enjoyed wasting isn't a waste, but this must be the lowest brow possible. A game designed to create addiction and profit (I got that from the gacha label and your admittance to whaling).
In other news, the editor of PushSquare recommends cocaine. Start with small doses then scale up as per your needs.
📝Write it down, kids. A little bit of crack gacha never hurt you. Only your family🥰
@get2sammyb Haha, no problem, do whatever you enjoy! (within reason). What's your go to team, or do you switch around?
But I've bought the battle pass twice simply because upgrade materials are so stingy (even more than Genshin) and i'm still struggling to level two full teams for MoC and end game content, let alone all the new characters I am getting.
It's a shame I have all these units that are stuck at Lv20 and I haven't even really started to farm relics and ornaments that will come first.
@z0d15g0d That is easily fixed. I have created a forum topic for Honkai Star Rail. Come discuss builds, tactics, enjoyments, frustrations etc.
Also tagging @Shigurui, come discuss HSR on the forum if you want. and telling @Titntin to steer well clear. It's a timesink. Good luck my friend, stay strong
@themightyant Thanks for setting that up. Enjoyed your rant and added my own. Hope to hear from more players on there.
@get2sammyb Hope shes a good addition to your teams when she is maxed. Did you get her LC also?
