The rhythmic action game Hi-Fi Rush, developed by Tango, published by Bethesda, and seemingly an Xbox exclusive, appears all but certain to be released on PS5. Dataminers continue to unearth additional evidence, and the latest indication is a series of T-shirt textures seemingly meant to celebrate the game's upcoming anniversary, and the images indicate a multiplatform launch.
Rumours began swirling in early January after the title was rated for PS4 and Nintendo in Australia. However, that filing was considered outdated, which might explain why the last-gen version appears to have been dropped. However, the datamined images that have surfaced in recent hours seem far more concrete, verified by The Verge's senior editor, Tom Warren, a trusted source for Microsoft news.
This is fantastic news for envious PlayStation players, as we have it on great authority that Hi-Fi Rush is excellent, with our sister site Pure Xbox awarding it 9/10. Check out the video version of that review below for an idea of the musical madness that awaits.
What do you think? Are you prepared to believe? How do you feel about Hi-Fi Rush, and would you check it out if/when it comes to PlayStation? Let us know in the comments section below.

My GOTY last year. Absolutely amazing game, and hopefully now more people have the opportunity to buy it.
I can't blame Bethesda for wanting to actually sell some copies. This is good news for all who are interested.
I’m assuming this and Penny’s Big Breakaway are being saved for the Nintendo Direct, potentially with The Plucky Squire, Little Kitty Big City, and maybe even Earthblade and Mina the Hollower. After big PlayStation and Xbox showings, I’m just being optimistic for a big Direct… with a large focus on multiplat titles that will probably be most successful on the Nintendo format.
I’d be truly surprised if other big Xbox exclusives made it to other platforms any time soon, but I do wonder if there’s any salt to the Starfield rumors. I feel like it’d sell A LOT on PS, even if it’s not that solid. I’d mostly be curious to read the reviews for it.
Already played it on my Series S. It's a good game for a small project but nowhere near Game of the Year caliber.
Still makes me wonder what the future will hold for gaming as that move would mark historical shift for gaming.
I am gonna be brutally honest here. I don't think any of the Xbox exclusives is worthwhile to me. Perhaps the elder scrolls 6, but even then i will not get invested cause who knows if it will ever release on playstation or nintendo (i don't like playing single player games on PC unless it's an RTS).
I am the type of gamer that needs to feel invested in a series, not just a single game and must have it's future secured. I don't do single games and i will not engage in unpredictability.
So... yeah. Have no interest on this.
It definitely seems to be happening at this point. Just waiting for the official announcement now I guess.
@Nem That's such an odd perspective. Not every game needs a sequel.
I am so happy as I love all of Tango’s games and I’ve been wanting to play this ever since I first saw the trailer. The art direction, style, voice acting, and gameplay look incredible. Can’t wait to play this finally.
It's arguably the best Xbox exclusive. With MS publically stating they have no confidence in future sales figures of the x/s it'll be interesting to see how their first 3rd party launch goes down.
@Nem
At first your perspective seemed absolutely crazy. Then I realised I don’t watch any TV series unless it has at least 3 series under its belt (so many have the Netflix curse of being cancelled prematurely), and much prefer series to films or limited series.
I also basically only read a book series if it has at least a trilogy going for it (sci-fi and fantasy fan).
So maybe your position isn’t as strange as it first seemed. Never have I felt that way with videogames though.
I see no drawback for Microsoft.
It's small niche game. It wasn't system seller and it was never supposed to be one. It's an equivalent of Sony porting Concrete Genie to Xbox and Switch.
Microsoft will get additional money from Sony/Nintendo players (like in case of Ori on Switch) and players will get to experience one of the best games from 2023.
If that means the game finally releases on a disc, I'm fine.
A good game that I feel was overhyped because it was shadow dropped and because it was the first quality Xbox exclusive after a long drought. It will be good for PS and Switch players to experience it but I also think a lot are going to be left wondering what all the fuss was about.
Not surprising, Phil Spencer has said exclusivity will be treated as a case by case scenario.
He’s just following through with what he’s been saying this whole time.
I played it when it was new and though it was a good game, it wasn’t great like many were making it out to be. I beat 3 or 4 bosses and then quit. I felt like I gave it enough time to grab me but it wasn’t my thing.
I'd certainly be interested as it was one of the first games I planned on playing whenever I got an Xbox. I'll gladly play on my PS5 if the option presents itself though.
Don’t worry, give the game to Sammy to review and he’ll make sure it gets a 6/10 like A Plague Tale Innocence
@Nem That's a really weird attitude and I can't believe you would actually do that.
Did you never play TLoU until the sequel was announced? Uncharted? Deathloop? Until Dawn? Returnal?
In fact are you genuinely saying you never play a new franchise unless a sequel is made?
Played sleds than an hour on gamepass. Not for me, hate rhythm game.
This was my favourite game of 2023 and I absolutely adored every minute of it. I wish that Xbox had promoted it more and didn't shadow drop it.
It'll be great to see it reach a wider audience on PlayStation and Switch and hopefully that will lead to a sequel.
I wish I could play this on PS4/PS5 but I doubt it’ll be on PS though.
Bethesda was bought by Microsoft hence why Starifeld is Xbox only same with Blade and Indiana Jones.
Hope the hinted rumour turns out to be true though but I don’t have high hopes though
@__jamiie
I’ve played all of those.
Have Deathloop but haven’t played it yet though.
Only played a few hours of Returnal but it’s absolutely fantastic
@Nem When is a game's sequel guaranteed? Even if a game is announced, it might get cancelled.
I've had this on my Steam wishlist for a while, but would love to have it on console instead.
Will happily pick up again if it comes to PS5. Really enjoyed on Xbox.
@Dragoon1994 Yea we know Hi-Fi Rush is owned by Xbox but this article is literally saying there is evidence it’s coming to PS and Switch.
Removed - trolling
@Angelus3K
Only hinted at it’s still only rumoured and not officially happening until they officially say it is themselves.
I’d love it to be true though as I’d love to play Hi-Fi rush as I don’t have an Xbox series yet so would love to play it on the PS
@Nem
Not every amazing game has to become a game series.
A lot of my favourite games aren’t a series
@TheCollector316 The way things went for them last year, i wouldnt put a Starfield ps5 release off the table.
@Fill3rup_
Starfield was actually supposed to be a PS5 exclusive but of course Microsoft bought Bethesda so it went Xbox exclusive instead
@Dragoon1994 Dude, it’s happening https://x.com/tomwarren/status/1753401593544765854?s=46&t=hpXtoqrez2YZnrDNphY8YQ
Not even a flicker on the intrest scale. But I hope it continues with all the other franchises.
@Angelus3K
Oh I see I thought it was just rumoured.
Thanks for that hope they announce soon when it’s out for PS, will be a day one for sure for me. The game looks amazing
@Dragoon1994
Yeah, temporarily exclusive to PlayStation versus permanently exclusive to Xbox and owned by them. There are a lot of folks out there that can't tell the difference.
So it's just the colours and texts on those screenshots hinting at PS5 and Switch released? Or anything else? If they are legit, I guess it's a pretty good indication, but still, wait and see and all that.
I'd probably check it out, I like what I've seen of it. I could play on pc but it looks like a game I'd rather play from the comfort of my couch.
@Dragoon1994 Oh yeah, i remember reading that. i dont know how they would ba able to do a u-turn that big,but Money talks
Will gladly play it! My husband has been playing it on PC and it is a lot of fun, if it comes to PS or Switch I will make my own playthrough
@Godot25 It's kind of sad what we define as "system sellers" these days. In some ways, we can all blame Sony for that: everyone now expects these cinematic melee-based action titles to be "system sellers".
Sure, it's nice that Sony puts out these kinds of games, but now it's 100% expected and anything else gets ignored.
It's been a double-edged sword for Sony as it's closed down most of the studios that made games like these in favor of the third-person cinematic melee-based action games.
Games like Astro's Playroom used to be "system sellers". Hi-Fi Rush would have been a "system seller". Ori series would have been considered "system sellers." I personally feel like they still are, but the mass gamer mentality says otherwise. Hi-Fi Rush is a unique and fun game that is only found on Xbox (well, for now, anyways) consoles.
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with Sony's first-party output. I'm just saying that Sony has put way more pressure on itself than it probably should have to always deliver big-budget titles. Sometimes "setting the bar high" isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Nintendo has the kind of wiggle room where it can put out small titles as well as big titles. It's the reason why Mario vs Donkey Kong can exist alongside Tears of the Kingdom.
Microsoft can as well where Hi-Fi Rush can exist along side Gears of War, Starfield, etc. Though many now argue that Microsoft hasn't produced a "system seller" in years.
Sony really can't do that anymore. It's a shame because I usually return to the games that are more about "joy" than "spectacle". Once the spectacle is over, I don't feel a need to go back; but "joy" wins out every time.
Not a huge fan of the game compared to others but i'm happy its coming over.
I feel it was a little over -hyped as Xbox were desperate for something exclusive, but it IS a good game and if you like this sort of genre its well worth playing.
Probably the best of the Xbox exclusives (unless you go back to Forza 5), but thats more a refelection on how dissapointed I am with their 'big guns' which I found pretty dissapointing. My Series X hasnt been switched on since October, when I decided to let my GP sub lapse, and thats not something I can say about many games consoles, and I've had them all since the Atari VCS.
To be fair to the Xbox, thats mainly cause I choose to play my 3rd parties on PS5 and I have a huge backlog of titles to play.
I'd like to see this on PS and see it getting the sales Tango deserves to see.
There is really little point in buying an XBox anymore since they want to put their st party on rival platforms. Phil Spencer sure is a great Playstation salesman.
@Titntin I guess one silver lining about being owned by a company that makes billions for simply existing is that Tango will continue to keep the lights on regardless of physical sales.
All it takes is one government/corporate contract for services and goods and the bills are paid. 🤣
@GamingFan4Lyf Lol, you are not wrong. But when I developed games I wanted the biggest audience to enjoy them. I would rarely take positions for games with a limited market, and I'm betting many of the devs at Tango will feel the same. When you are proud of your creative work, you want to share it with everyone.
@Titntin Perhaps that is why this game is going multi-platform. Maybe Tango wanted to see this game expand beyond PC and Xbox and they simply worked with upper management to make it happen (that's basically what happened with Ori and Cuphead despite exclusivity deals).
I wouldn't be surprised if this kind of becomes the norm, now, where Microsoft puts games out to other consoles after a year or two of exclusivity (if any exclusivity at all).
With Microsoft no longer really needing console sales for the Xbox division to be profitable, the main selling point of the console will be having the ability to play first party games via a subscription model rather than buying them one-by-one on your platform of choice.
That doesn't mean you wouldn't be able to buy first-party Xbox games on an Xbox console, it would just be the main "draw" of investing in the ecosystem to not be locked into doing that for the budget-conscious casual.
@GamingFan4Lyf I agree completely. Sony's output and the games that do well are disturbingly similar when you summarise what they.
3rd person, single player, cinematic, action/adventure games. Great games of course but Sony definitely has fallen into a pattern.
That's why I'm so pleased that MachineGames went down the 1st person route with Indiana Jones. A 3rd person game would have been instantly compared to Uncharted/Tomb Raider.
@thefourfoldroot1 I'm glad you got it. Yes, it's the same thing. It's about the time investment.
Say i got Guardians of the galaxy on my backlog. It's a good game (from what i hear), but i know there won't be any sequel. So, i am in no particular rush to go through it.
Let's compare to Star wars jedi order. It's sequel came out recently. My motivation to put time into playing it is bigger because i want to invest in it so i can enjoy the sequel/s.
But, yes, it's the same with TV series and movies. If it's a one off i will not invest the time. I need to know there will be at least 2 seasons.
Maybe it's not clear to some, but time is our most valuable commodity and what i'm saying is i manage it. I hit an age where i know i won't be able to play every single game and i have to be more selective. There is nothing crazy about it.
@__jamiie I'm not going to lie and say I am not slightly disappointed it's not entire third-person, but I do think MachineGames are doing the first-person aspect in a smart way.
People have been throwing around comparisons to the Starbreeze developer Chronicles of Riddick games (especially since MachineGames is comprised of ex-Starbreeze devs), but I see it as more of a Metroid Prime approach (which is very high praise).
I think MachineGames has the right idea on the approach to combat situations - seems very "Arkane". I think that could have still translated well in third-person and given the game a little bit of a different identity to Uncharted/Tomb Raider. Then again, that probably would have drawn more comparisons to Metal Gear Solid instead, since it does have a "Stealth" aspect.
I guess my only real gripe with Indiana Jones is that, much like my complaint regarding Sony doing a lot of one thing, the game is yet another first-person title from Microsoft.
@__jamiie only played The last of us cause i trusted naughty dog from uncharted. Though that proved a mistake as i did not like it. Have not played until dawn or returnal. No interest to do so. I'm sure i got Until dawn temporarily for free on the ps5. I tried it for like 15m. Wasn't for me.
Indeed, i only played Uncharted 1 after 2 was out. Though this is a specific situation as well. I have always been a fan of Amy Hennig and the legacy of kain series, so i knew the quality of her work before hand.
Not to say i never played a non-series game. But i tend to not do that as i get older. My point was that i cannot expect that microsoft games will come out regularly on the systems i own and i am not interested in an Xbox, so i see no point in getting invested in them. The only ones i would care which are Elder scrolls and Fallout cause they were series i was invested on which are no longer a guarantee. So, i shed them like lost weight rather than depend on Microsoft's "mood". For the same reason i see no point in getting invested in new ones not knowing if i will ever see the sequel, if there is one. It's about time investment. I don't want to invest time if i am not sure it will be rewarded and i won't be blackmailed.
Also some took my comments as a general blanket. I do play single games in some cases. But i want to have the guarantee that the sequel will be something i can play.
So, say i enjoy and finish hi-fi rush and a sequel is announced and it's Xbox only. I won't be buying an Xbox for it. So, i wasted my time investment in the series. Thus i rather not engage at all and reclaim my time which can be better used playing something else.
@Nem Whilst I undertsand the need to manage time (I was born in 64 and have a lot less of it left than most here), I still dont understand your reasoning?
If I play and enjoy a game now, why is that invalidated unless theres another one? Why cant I enjoy a single season of a show for what it is. Why does having a second season available make it better? Second season might be cr@p!
I'm happy to enjoy one off experiences for what they are. In fact my time is so precious now that I'd much prefer a game where I get all the enjoyment I want from a single installment, why do I need to play it multiple times to enjoy it? Thats the big waste of time. I'm not playing the new like a dragon because I feel like I've seen and done most of what it offers already - surely I'm better off playing a new fresh experinece?
I must be mis understanding what you are saying, because it makes no sense to me, despite me feeling the slipping of time as much as most....
Am I missing your point?
@Titntin
The logic is that i have played a lot of games and I know what i like and i like feeling invested in a series and get rewarded for it. I cleared up in the previous post that it doesn't mean i don't play new games but i want to have the guarantee i can continue to enjoy the series if a sequel is to come. That is not something i can do for Microsoft games given my past experiences with the company (unless it's a PC RTS) and my unwillingness to purchase more of their hardware.
We are different. I do understand new and fresh. But i want new and fresh in a structure i know i will enjoy. New just for the sake of being different doesn't necessarily result in a good game.
Let's use Hi-fi rush and Yakuza/like a dragon as examples.
Say i enjoy hi-fi and would love to play more. A sequel comes out and it's locked to Xbox. I will feel let down or blackmailed.
Does it take away the time i spent with the original? No. But, that is time i could have used to play something else.
Maybe something i didn't mention is that i got a decent back catalog and every game is in a competition with others for my time.
Now like a dragon. I have played every game in the series. Is the gameplay new and fresh? Well... it had a bit of a reset with 7 but it doesn't need to be new and fresh to me. Being improved is enough. It needs to be something i enjoy and show a new setting/story/mini-games. That is fresh to me. The core gameplay that works doesn't necessarily need to be changed for the sake of change.
Now, because i have played this series for so long i have an emotional attachment to the characters and i feel joy when i see them return and get to spend some time with them. That is a very rewarding feeling that comes cause i have played previous entries. If 8 was my first like a dragon, i would not feel joy at things like hitting the town in Ijincho at the start with Namba and Adachi before setting off in a new adventure. I think that will go over the head of new players that haven't played 7.
The emotional investment and feeling of familiarity and it's pay-off is something that matters to me.
Now, again, this is not to say i won't play new games. As i said i just want the option of continuing to the sequel, if one comes to be, before i invest the time.
So, at the moment i got ghost of tsushima to play. I have not yet. I likely will feel more haste if a sequel happens, but i will play through it and if i enjoy it and want more i can look forward to the possible sequel.
You may have a point. But, i don't think i will be playing lots of new games when i age more though. I think i will likely just replay my favorites and not be invested in any new ones. I don't think there is any gameplay i have not experienced by now and i have a good grasp on what works for me. So, i do think i am in a different journey where i am ever more selective to what i know i will enjoy.
@Nem Thanks for answering. We may be different in this regard but there's no right way to enjoy your games.
I would still advise that this game is worth the time investment regardless of it it ever gets a sequal or not, but I know my advise will fall on deaf ears! 😊
Happy gaming mate, however you do it!
@Titntin Thanks for reading bud.
It won't fall on deaf ears. The recommendation will be taken into account. But, no promises. 😉
Happy gaming!
@GamingFan4Lyf Well, audience decides what system seller is. Sony found out that their audience likes third-person action adventure games so they steered in that direction.
Microsoft has Game Pass so they are betting on variety of content.
Nintendo is showing that "system seller" can be game from almost any genre. Animal Crossing, Zelda, Mario, Pikmin, Xenoblade etc.
I would dare to say that Starfield was system seller, because it pushed Xbox consoles and also Game Pass, which is it's job and despite not really stellar reviews. And I expect Indiana Jones to move good number of consoles despite fact that game is first-person. And then you have Forza Horizon which is staple of racing genre and is always moving consoles. And I expect Fable (third person RPG), Perfect Dark (FPS) and Quake (FPS) to do the same if they will be quality titles.
@Godot25 I wouldn't say some of those are system sellers. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 sold 2.7 million in 5 years which is really quite weak. Yakuza 8 just sold a million in a week and is seen as a niche, cult series. FFXVI was seen as disappointing by many, including shareholders, and it sold 3 million in a week. Back to XC2, we can therefore say that over 98% of Switch owners didn't buy it. Pikmin 4 sold slightly less than XC2, albeit in a shorter time - but its sales have totally fallen off now so it's not going up much more. The last Animal Crossing sold loads but that was a COVID irregularity. The whole thing at the time was how it helped people deal with lockdown, the BBC had articles about it, even. It sold at least 10 times more than many other games in the series.
The real strong sellers for them seem to be Pokémon and Mario Kart, not even the Mario platformers so much. Mario Kart 8 has sold over 30 million more copies than Mario Odyssey, staggeringly.
@Matroska Final Fantasy XVI was only seen as a disappointment by Square Enix due to them thinking every game that doesn't sell 15 million copies immediately, is a disappointment. FFXVI did very well.
Clearly, we are seeing MS move towards going full third party. With all of the content they have bought, it would be very foolish to lock it to the distant third place box.
Just gotta wait for gears trilogy set.
@Matroska @theSpectre Um this conversation is working off completely outdated information.
Yes 3m seems low when compared to something like FF7 Remake. Given how well FF15 did out of the gate before pissing everyone off.
FF16 did well and square defended it. Ergo, not a disappointment. Never was.
Also 3m is a discussion for June of 2023. It's now February 2024. FF16 has sold 8m copies since launch. The Game still consistently gets in the top 20 in many regions. I'm sure we'll see even bigger numbers once the PC version releases, spuring console awareness again as the marketing picks up for the PC version. Any issues the share holders had at launch for what is apparently a slow burn title will melt away when 4th quarter numbers come in. Though I have a feeling any hard feelings towards square stock has less to do with FF16 and more to do with the 4 other games that released the year prior and how the entire release schedule for 2024 was pretty baren as far as square enix releases go beyond that. Unless people are still talking up Valkyrie Elysium, the big to do has been remakes like Tactics Ogre Reborn and Star Ocean The Second Story R.
Ultimatley FF16 IS IN FACT a system seller based on that data. You don't get a sales spike in the holiday season with such a pathetic discounted price (I mean it barely brought the price down, not that it was so low you'd be stupid not to buy it), 6 months after your game releases unless its good and its a system seller. Lastly square has stated the game has consistently met expectations.
@NotSoCryptic I didn't say FFXVI wasn't a success. I said SE claimed it fell below their (absurdly high) expectations. The game sold 3 million it's first weekend, which is Sony first party numbers. The failure narrative was pushed by Xbox fanboys who claimed the game failed because it was exclusive to PS5....as if any Xbox fanboys were to actually play the game if it weren't on Game Pass.
