Diablo 4's third season will kick off on the 23rd January, according to the game's freshly updated login screen. Blizzard is yet to actually tell us what Season 3 will entail, but the developer has been teasing a livestream for the near future. It's safe to assume that details are incoming, then.
Of course, this also means that you've got under two weeks to see off Season 2, which has thrown vampiric hordes at players for several months now. It also has its own storyline spread across a kind of mini campaign, so you'll need to get that wrapped up fairly soon.
Looking at the broader picture, Diablo 4's in a bit of a weird place at the moment. The aforementioned Season 2 brought with it some positive changes to endgame content and the way it's structured, but the game's still got some notable issues in terms of itemisation. What's more, each new season requires players to create and level up a new hero — which, given the title's relatively slow post-campaign character progression, can be a very time consuming process.
Are you still playing Diablo 4? Might you hop back in for this new season? Grind out yet more legendary equipment in the comments section below.

I played it for 10 hours or so but haven’t gone back to it. I can’t follow the story at all and it’s just all a bit boring compared to D3, for me at least. I want to get back to it but I really don’t have a clue what is going on.
@kyleforrester87 I'm in a similar boat.
I was just sat here watching the clock tick towards 5pm, debating with myself about whether or not I want to give Diablo IV another try.
Then I read this article and remembered everything about the game that I don't like.
I put in over 50 hours around launch.
I think I'm done.
For online games I'd rather put my limited free time in to more Elden Ring and FF XIV.
@Shepherd_Tallon @kyleforrester87 Glad I'm not the only one, it's an odd game.
I think the campaign story has some pretty cool moments and it's probably a better plot than Diablo 3, especially in terms of characters, but there's just something monotonous about how it's presented. I really struggle to pay attention at times, and find myself wanting to just get back to the grind.
But then even the gameplay feels weirdly lacking, and I haven't been able to put my finger on why.
@ShogunRok It's exactly this.
I can't explain why, but this is what it is.
I've been going back and forth in my mind on this game for ages now.
I enjoyed the plot and the dark fantasy setting keeps trying to draw me back in, but there definitely is a monotony to it all that just makes me drift off and lose interest.
I wonder if I'm being unfair to it and it's just not the game I want it to be, but at the same time I've rarely felt less engaged while playing something.
The campaign is great, season 2 made some huge adjustments, but yeah.. the albatross is the itemization once you hit tier 4, which isn’t getting overhauled until season 4. I’m assuming this will be D4’s equivalent of D3’s Loot 2.0 update, which brought that game back to life. D3 had an equally rough time post-launch, I remember it well.
If they don't begin addressing the itemization and stats, then it's still not worth me putting my time back into.
I ran a rouge into the low 70s right at release and then they nerfed the utter hell out of my character right before season 1, which completely turned me off of the entire game (this as someone with probably close to a thousand hours in D3 across platforms).
I hear it's better progression-wise, but it's boring AF loot-wise, which is half the fun for me.
@Shepherd_Tallon It's a shame. The game's got a great atmosphere and I love how it looks. It's all so detailed but with the isometric camera it's like looking at a beautifully made diorama. I just wish the gameplay itself was more engaging, somehow.
@ShogunRok @Shepherd_Tallon @kyleforrester87 I really like it as I find it's more like diablo 2. I love diablo 3 and it was my 1st ever platinum trophy but I found it way too easy and arcade. Diablo 4 is pretty punishing and I'm still trying to get a level 50 hardcore character (that butcher has done me 7 times.) I've given it a break as I got carried away with lies of p and lords of the fallen. Once wo long fallen dynasty is finished it's time for my long awaited cyberpunk play through with a bit of d4 here and there..I agree the story is a bit all over the place.
@Shepherd_Tallon @ShogunRok The combat in D3 is very rhythmic, D4 less so I find. It's just less engaging (and therapeutic) moment to moment.
I actually enjoy the game, but seasons don't do anything for me. It will take new content for me to come back.
I think I'll wait for the expansion to be honest. "Diminishing returns" is the term for Diablo 4 to a tee
When I finally decided to check out the current season after it had been out for some time, first thing that happened was the quest item at the end of a dungeon spawned inside a fountain making the item inaccessible. Read that I could exit and run back to the end, but just said "nah" and uninstalled lol. Sucks cause it can be a fun game sometimes, I think
I’m surprised that they announced season 3 but have given zero information about it. Season 2 was announced a weeks after season 1 launched and they drip fed information about it until launch. It’s kind of disappointing how little information is available.
@Wilforce Season 2 was revealed early because they were in a place of desperation at the time with all the negative criticism and dwindling player numbers. It was definitely not what they intended.
@ShogunRok Same here. Had 700 hours on D3, loved every minute. There's something lacking in 4, it's ineffable and hard to place.
I bought 4 recently and after a paltry 8 hours I was bored... absolutely mad, just felt deflated with no desire to continue. I did feel that the combat was a bit slow, boss fights annoying, the snowy world design wasn't my cup of tea either - it's bland.
I was also really annoyed by the store, selling these amazing looking item sets for £20 a pop!! The cynic in me thinks they intentionally make the in game gear dull to encourage sales of the glorious looking sets. Transmogs that should have been gear sets within the game itself like in 3.
I will try again in a year after the DLC because I want to like the game, but it definitely feels... soulless? Yeah, that's it.
