Yesterday, we brought you the sorry news that almost 100 employees had been laid off at developer Eidos Montreal, yet more casualties in the ongoing, industry-shaking Embracer Group debacle. Further, an in-development Deus Ex game, which we knew next to nothing about, was cancelled, having apparently entered development back in 2022.
According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, this next entry in the Deus Ex series was scheduled to enter production at the end of 2024. Hopefully, we learn more about the mystery project someday, but one thing's for sure: Adam Jensen actor Elias Toufexis didn't get a phone call, which suggests it probably wasn't going to be directly concerned with Eidos Montreal's previous (excellent) Deus Ex games, Human Revolution and Mankind Divided. He also has some strong feelings about the current state of the video game industry.
Embracer Group gobbled up both Eidos Montreal and Tomb Raider dev Crystal Dynamics in a fire sale from Square Enix back in 2022, as the Japanese publisher sought to offload some of its western studios. What was a fantastic deal for Embracer has turned out to be a truly terrible one for fans of these legendary franchises.
