Final Fantasy 7 Remake was a game long thought to be a pipe dream, but Square Enix eventually made it happen. It's being released in three parts, each big enough to be a full game in its own right, but it's happening, and fans are currently bouncing off the walls in excitement for part two, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. While this particular instalment in the series gets a huge amount of love, what of its predecessor, Final Fantasy 6? Could it receive a similarly grand remake? If it did, it'd take decades, according to one producer.
In an interview, longtime Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase has commented on the idea of remaking the beloved sixth game in the series. Translated by Shinra Archaeology Department, Kitase says the FF7 remake project has so far taken about 10 years, and that a similar remake of FF6 could take twice as long. This is partly because of the game's large number of characters.
Hironobu Sakaguchi, the series' creator, also said previously that remaking FF6 would be a tougher job because of the jump from 2D pixel art to full 3D.
While we've no doubt a remake of FF6 would go down very well with fans, a 20-year production would be ridiculous. Unfortunately it seems quite unlikely at this point. However, rumours have been circulating for a long time about a remake of Final Fantasy 9, so it's possible Square Enix isn't done revisiting the franchise's classic entries yet. At least there's the Pixel Remaster!

Let my grandchildren bring me the last part of this game at my retirement party 😂
Just thinking of all those characters available to play in modern 3D akin to FFVIIR gave me a kind of vertigo
He didn't say no. 20 years is a summer break for SE dev times.
Years ago Kitase and others also talked down the likely-hood of a FF7 remake cuz “HD towns are hard”. So…

some fans are currently bouncing off the walls in excitement for part two.
This'll be the first I don't preorder. I still liked all of them, but Lightning Returns, XV, VII Part 1, and XVI for me is a string of merely decent games that have removed the series from day one status.
FF6 remake will be released before Star Citizen.
I may be in the minority here but I don't like the new take on ff7. All they had to do was make the same game but with new shiny graphics. I tried the first part, far too much was changed and I just couldn't get into it. Didn't like the combat at all, bring back the turn based games of old. If they remake 9 and skip 8, they won't be getting my money. Not that they get it anymore anyway.
Well there's no need to go for the graphical style of the FF7 Remake, I'd be a happy with a Octopath Traveler style or Trials of Mana style for any remakes of older FF games.
You can cut that time in 4 by making it a 2D remake, just sayin'
Tell you what, give me a US studio fluent in Unreal, we'll ahve the damn thing done in 5 years. Give me phone time with project heads once every 1 to 2 months as well. Oh and give me 200 artists and animators. 300 to 500 if you want me to realistically hit that target of 5 years.
This whole "oh its 2D it'll be hard" is nonsense. They basically had to remake everything in FF7 Remake. None of the areas are laid out the same. If anything the PS1 version was just concept art by comparison. Biggest change was combat, I'd ask to have FF7 Rebirths code to use as a pushing off point will help with some of the issues I'm expecting.
Classic Square Enix with their self-imposed rules
FF VI was a masterpiece, still is. 20 years? What is he smoking?
@McBurn not really. Same amount of work needs to be done. All the 2D work would have to be redone and re-imagined. All the animations would need to be redone. Cutscenes would likely be added. At best it would take 3/4 of the estimated time. Especially if they bring the endings in line with modern standards.
Well, better get to it then. FF6 is possibly the greatest game ever made. A remake could be even better.
Best ff game by far imo surprised they haven't don't or started one lol kinda gutted can't get the pixel remaster on Xbox I'd have got it just for 6 🤣🤣
Just don't make it open world. FF VII takes this long because they added alot of content and an alternate timeline. If they sticked to just remake the story the game would have been completely done already. The same would apply to VI, yes these games have al lot of content, but they act like the classics are 200+ hours games.
@MrGilly69 Ok, so then what's your point? You clearly weren't going to buy it anyway.
@NoHope Right? It's a different game from FF7 and they could remake it in a different art style with a different style of gameplay that wouldn't take near as long.
In all honesty, I would be happy with a semi 3D version with turnbased. Not every game needs to be some grand OTT experience. As much as I love the remake and hopefully PT2, I don't feel every game needs some huge overhaul.
This is hyperbole. Games from a new IP don't take 20 years to make, so why would a remake take that long?
Maybe it wouldn't take so long to make if you didn't bloat the heck out of it to sell it as three separate games.
That guy doesn't know too much about game dev then
You can do amazing things with Unreal these days. 20 years is a ridiculous number. It's bad enough that Final Fantasy VII is being split into 3 games and developed over a decade. A game as big as Persona 3 was remade in Unreal in 4 years.
Love FFVI, but I really hope they don't attempt a remake. Just enjoy the memories friends.
@EquiinoxGII Just give a extra rerun of the remaster disc and I will be happy. Or maybe make it extra polished 2D game like Star Ocean R that game looks fantastic.
@MrGilly69 I agree we could have had a fantastic FF7R years ago they could have implemented the new fighting and kept the story like it was with some small extra in there and nobody would have complained. And made FF6R like they did with Star Ocean R it would have been great with way less costs and risks.
Imagine the theatre scene brought to life in modern gaming. Goosebumps
That is ridiculous. FF7 is a bigger game and is taking less time.
Not sure what makes him say that. It's not like the models of FF7 were thoroughly fleshed out either. Backgrounds were all 2D. Models were blocky messes.
The thing is that remaking FF6 does mean re-invisioning the sets. How extensive they make them is up to them. ¯(ツ)/¯
I keep on seeing the idea thrown around that FF7 remake would've been better off if it was remade 1:1 but this isn't true for one simple reason.
Look at the Shadow Of Colossus remake or the Demons Souls remake. Who still talks about these games? Exactly... No one. I'm not saying that the 2 remakes I mentioned are bad, far from it but they are played, enjoyed and then mostly forgotten.
By splitting the FF7 remake into multiple games that have expanded and transformed FF7 into its own series, they've guaranteed that people will still be talking about FF7 for decades more to come. I'm glad they've done it the way they have, means more Cloud and Co to enjoy and makes the discussion around it more exciting.
Where FF6 is concerned, I don't really care if they remake it or not or how they do it but 20 years sounds dumb as hell.
it won't take 20 years if the fate of s-e is riding on it. milking ff7 has saved the company on many occassions. they will save the ff6 remake for a rainy day. it will not take 20 years. people should look up "hyperbole" in the dictionary
Get this, Square Enix: You don't need to turn a one-game remake into 3 games. A one-game remake should take no more than 5 years tops. 20 years is absolutely ridiculous.
Just hire more people and reduce the development time. There are lots of talented developers searching for a job now.
Does anybody not want a FFVIII remake? I played it as a kid along with VII and loved it.
Make it hd 2d like seriously octopath traveler and star ocean 2 remake it's doing great hell there remaking the dragon quest series in that style 👌
What utter bollocks
@kcarnes9051 It's like when they adapted The Hobbit into three films — utterly greedy and unnecessarily drawn out - like butter scraped over too much bread.
The success of Honkai star rail has shown that scifi magic turn based games still have an audience. Gimmie FF8 with updated graphics and turn based.
Where's my FFIX remake! Lean into that more cartoony style! Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart looked amazing just imagine an RPG made with that quality.
Well, that sucks.
Well, that's if they did it the same was as Final Fantasy VII.
(and that basically more a reboot than a remake)
I do not think it's important to go to such lengths.
mmm hmm, mmm hmm.
They better get started then shouldn't they
@NotSoCryptic : I'm not gonna even bother to explain how much more work it is to completely redo a 2D game in 3D with 4k textures and all the bells and whistles like FF7R did. If you care enough to try and correct me about it, inform yourself a little and you'll soon realize what I mean.
@McBurn I'm glad you didn't bother, because you'd just reveal how clueless you are trying to explain to a 2 decade long industry vetern what is involved in converting a 2D game to 3D; by throwing around buzzwords you heard in a PR document from a major publisher. "teh 4k's!!!!". You clearly have no concept of how much of FF7R's underlying work can be used to speed up the process of remaking FF6. 10 years, tops, 2 parts. Even if they go a little crazy and expand things out and don't start hopping into sequel territory like with the false remake that is FF7R.
I enjoy Kitase's work, but he's being extremely conservative in his estimate.
@NotSoCryptic : Sure, if that's the hill you wanna die on, enjoy yourself (:
@McBurn I'm not the one dying on a hill here, but knock yourself out with your lame clueless come backs.
